Howard hopeful of salary agreement
Daily News staff
Ryan Howard has been working out in Clearwater, Fla., since Jan. 5, he said tonight on Comcast SportsNet's "SportsNite" program. He also talked about his salary arbitration situation with the Phillies.
Howard asked for $18 million while the Phillies offered $14 million. If the sides cannot agree on a contract, the case will to go arbitration. Howard said he was hopeful of a deal without arbitration. "Maybe we'll be able to get something worked out," he said.
He was asked about the possibility of a long-term deal with the Phillies. "That would be beautiful," Howard said. "That would be beautiful. That would be something we would want to see happen."

Howard has a large nose Captain
Pujols deal + 10% would be best compromise. A win-win. Pay attention Rubie !! mick314
Bobwhiskeybreath, I didn't realize Mike Schmidt was dead, or Willie Mays, or Hank Aaron, or . . . well, you get the point. Howard hasn't hit more home runs and driven in more runs than any person alive. And you're calling people idiots. If you think any team would rather have Howard than Pujols, you are the idiot. Neal Obstat
Neal, right-on....all 32 GMs would start their teams with Pujols over Howard anyday....and there are probably others ahead of Howard on that list of team starters, too.....he's good, but he's not THAT good.....too many warts in his game. Mark1npt
bob, correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't pujols also rookie of the year, runner up to mvp, and mvp? so how does that make howard worth more than pujols? pujols is also a world champion. idiotic statement. and i'm not even gonna touch your "hit more homers & rbi's than any person alive" comment. geezus dude. jmudukes79
18 million? Can't catch, can't throw, can't run the bases. jmccaff
I know that this letter puts me right in there with all of the other Philadelphia crazies. My question is that if Howard is deemed to be unsignable would he be more valuable now in terms of a trade or two years down the road? What realistically would an American league team give up to get him now? I know he is a great player so I feel weird saying that he drives me nuts when he pulls the ball with the shift on and when he butchers throws to second. Would the Yankees or Red Sox give up great pitching prospects to get him now? Do I need to take some Ativan? porcamiseria33
jm...can't even make contact the majority of the time....... Mark1npt- Howard worth more than Pujols?? LOL If Pujols played here with the short dimentions, he's hit .350, 55 HRs, 165 RBI. Howard will be traded in a year or two, most likely a year. His salary demands don't fit in with the Phillies' model. You can bet on it.
NTBH....is that all? I had his (Pujols') stats pegged much higher...I'll bet he could maybe hit .400 in CBP....wouldn't it be something if we signed him when his current contract runs out with the Cards? Imagine, a premier power hitter who actually hits! Not just swings and misses! And can actually field! Wouldn't that be a big plus to our pitching staff?...Way more restful nights for them and for me! Mark1npt
Let's calrify a few things. First Howard hasn't even hit more HR or driven in more RBIs tehn every active player. He does have teh best numbers of current players during the time he's played (the past 4 years). Having said that, the point raised about his comaritive worth is valid. It doesn't matter whether we thing he's worth 18 million, 14 million or even 1 million. The players who, like him, are the top power hitters in teh game are getting the kind of money he's asking for, so he is worth it. Your car may not be worth what you can sell it for, but that is the market value for good or bad. Whether he's worth more in trade now or in a few years is neither here nor there. We won't be trading him this year unless either we are out of contention by trade deadline or someone offers us Babe Ruth, Steve Carlton and Ty Cobb in return. jeff gross
When Howard hits under .200 through May again with a ton of strikeouts everyone will be clamoring to trade him. If that guy could ever get off to a decent start, he could name his price. SteveS11
Jeff - you make one big mistake in your analysis - those other guys who are "like" Howard, big HR and RBI guys, or anyone else who has signed a big contract recently - they were FREE AGENTS! They have a market value because they have a market. Howard wants free agent dollars before he is a free agent. That is my only gripe. If the Phils were bidding to keep his services in a FA year, this would be a different discussion. But he doesn't actually have a "market value" at this point. Gary Varsho
did anyone get to hear his interview with Chris "Maddog" Russo yesterday? I missed it and wanted to hear what he had to say about the contract negotiations. Link? Thanks. phairmount
