Ryan Howard has been working out in Clearwater, Fla., since Jan. 5, he said tonight on Comcast SportsNet's "SportsNite" program. He also talked about his salary arbitration situation with the Phillies.
Howard asked for $18 million while the Phillies offered $14 million. If the sides cannot agree on a contract, the case will to go arbitration. Howard said he was hopeful of a deal without arbitration. "Maybe we'll be able to get something worked out," he said.
He was asked about the possibility of a long-term deal with the Phillies. "That would be beautiful," Howard said. "That would be beautiful. That would be something we would want to see happen."
I really like Howard. You are a great ballplayer. Just take your $14 million and run will ya? Maybe just bend a lil' and accept $14 million per year for 10 years. Come on......— BigDogGoneFishN- problem is that most players are looking out for most money they can make,wherever that might be . can't blame them for that ,but then remember pat burrell who wanted to stay here for his entire career, and was sent packing . so management doesn't have clean hands when it comes down to a player trying to get the best deal and stay with the team. jm— machuzick

- There's just no way Howard approaches Albert Pujols' value -- now or in the future. The best Howard should hope for is to argue for a long term contract equivalent to Pujols' 7 years, $100 million - X where X is as small as Howard can negotiatee it. Guess what? That's 7 years at $98 million, $14 million a season and Howard is not worth a nickel more and arguably is worth less.— Claudio Vernight

- I'll bet they'll agree on a one year 16.5 M deal, then will start good faith negotiation for a longer-term extension. There's a real advantage to being on a World Champion!
- Economically, the Phillies can not pay the dollars that Howard brings in for them. He effects the sales on everything down to food and beverage. 200 million for 10 years waould be a fair deal for Howard.— jpelle36
- Morons, none of you went to Wharton....you have no clue that Howard is "worth" $100mil or $200 mil...this economic climate is making the greedy players scurry for a long term deal quickly, panic is setting in and someone like Howard may settle for a $100mil contract guaranteed now rather than risk a deteriorating economy next year and an even smaller long term deal....or arbiter's award. There's panic in the streets and it's fun to watch, after years of the owners taking it up the buttocks with no recourse.
