Howard doesn't think he'll be out long term

POSTED: Tuesday, August 3, 2010, 1:44 PM

Ryan Howard is back in Philadelphia, as we told you in today's Daily News, to have his injured left ankle examined.

He remains optimistic that he won't need to be put on the disabled list, although he was on crutches. Howard is scheduled for an MRI exam.

"I'm not worried that it’s long term," Howard told NBC10's John Clark at the airport before visiting team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti. "It's been 2 days and I’ve ben able to put pressure on it and just using the crutches for precautionary measures. Hopefully, maybe it's like 4, 7 days. Maybe 10 days."

Howard was hurt when he slid back into second base in the first inning Sunday against the Washington Nationals.

"It’s part of the game," Howard said. "It's a little frustrating. Right now the focus is just getting better and see what happens ...  It feels alright. I can put pressure on it … just need to see how long it takes."

"There’s pain, there’s swelling. Once we get all the swelling out, we'll see where it goes from there and what the MRI says and what ligaments are involved."

A stint on the DL would be another setback for a Phillies team that has suffered through major injuries throughout the season.

"On the positive side of things, we’re still only 2.5 games back," Howard said. "That’s the kind of the funny, interesting thing. We’ve had these setbacks and guys getting hurt. We’re still only 2.5 back with only 2 months to play. I’m trying to stay positive."

It certainly looks like a trip to the DL for Ryno, retroactive to Sunday. That would give him a better window to heal without rushing anything. Anyone think that RAJ may call up Andy Tracy for a swan song? I know Gload will get some time at first, but he has been our most consistent bat off the bench. Thoughts?

Hope he's back in time for the Mutts; if not this weekend's series then next weekend's.

Here's hoping we get the big guy back racking up those rbi's. But there's no hurry. We need him at 100%.

Just need to stay close until Utley, Victorino, and The Big Piece get back. We're gonna need that offense to score a lot of runs so we don't have to sweat out another Lidge outing.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the Phillies can manage 10 games without Howard. With Werth and Ibanez coming around, the team is just a Rollins hot streak away from getting things going again.

Another lesson for the young ballplayers out there on the importance of good baserunning. In this case, Howard's bad baserunning = injury. If he hadn't sloppily rounded 2nd and had a brief brain cramp, he never would've had to rush back to the base in the awkward manner that he did. Dang it all. Please come back soon!

I wouldn't say he "slid back into second base." It was more like a lunge ... the kind that baserunners typically get hurt employing.

The boys have done a decent job staying in the hunt with all of these injuries. I hope they will continue to grind it out and let Ryan get that ankle fully healed before he comes back. We don't need that being an issue in the playoffs.

I say put him on the DL, he needs the rest and as much as the rehab. You could see he was pressing. We are 3 back from Atlanta with plenty of time to make it up, we need him healthy for the stretch run and playoffs, assuming we make it.

According to WIP guys, Mike Lowell can be had for a song. Right handed power. plays third while Poly holds the fort at second

I would DL him to be sure. Howard has carried this team in August and September, and we need him to be tip top.

We shall see because the Mets and Braves will be around soon to check this question. In a word No. Who will drive in the runs? Perhaps Werth.

Poor Charlie. Ruben has him going into tonight's game shorthanded without replacing the injured Howard, a Rule 5 pitcher who belongs in AAA and a closer who has lost velocity on his fastball. Charlie is a manager of the year candidate the way he keeps this team going with all the injuries, a minor leaguer in the bullpen all season and a fading once star closer.

If MRI shows ligament damage then no question Howard needs the DL. Try to get Lowell put him at 3rd base.

Charlie knows better then any of us that injuries are inevitable and part of any sport. Last year it was the snakebitten Mets. This year, the snake has visited Philadelphia. Time for some of the unknowns to become knowns. It's a great opportunity for the likes of D. Brown, Jroll, Francisco, and Poly to earn all that money.

Good post Dull. Ryan, go to the DL, get rested and come back. Maybe the Phillies will be able to put their 1st team on the field intact for a post Labor Day push. Just stay close.

If even Howard is saying 7-10 days then the DL is a pretty sure bet. We should all be happy if 15 days is all it ends up being.

if its a high ankle sprain, it could hamper him significantly the rest of the year. NOt sure if Lowell has anything left..he could have been playing third for the last few weeks though instead of Dobbs/ Ramson, and could play first now, though Gload will be fine for a week or so against righties. GEt well soon, big man

why is Dobbs still on this team?!?!?! Should have picked up Wiggington when we had the chance, here's hoping Rube is smart enough to make a waiver trade pickup to help us through the injuries and bolster the bench when all are healthy....

10 days? let's just make it 15 and DL him. They can't afford to be w/o a bat for 10 games.

For all those little league coaches outthere. A runner is taught to run thru the bases and pick up the coach. Although Howard was hurt in the play, it wasn't because of bad baserunning. He was safe, remember. It was because one of those freak things that happens. If for example, the fielder bobbles the ball or kick the ball a few feet away by running thru the bag he is already in position to advance. If he stops like some minor league or softball managers in here will suggest, he would not have the chance to advance. Raul got hurt the day before, I guess that was a bad play also. Unbelievable!

The walking wounded are taking a toll on the bench, either make waiver trade for Lowell,or bring up Rizotti. Put Howard on DL so he can be replaced. Either bring up bat or another arm, Bastardo. Looks like all the boys will be back around same time end of August. WE really need to gut out these next 2 - 3 weeks and stay close, atleast Prado is hurt for Braves. Braves offense is really missing his bat, hopefully Mutts can win this series against Braves! Halladay needs to bring his "a" game because I think I saw a stat saying Oswalt hasnt beat Marlins since 2007? Why did we trade for starting pitcher, when we've needed bullpen and bat this whole time. Two bullpen arms and decent bat would be really nice right now. Especially since Bautista and Phils were close and Jays really wanted Gose,Maybe we couldve had Bautista,Gregg/Downs/Frasor. Happ and Gose another prospect would have been better spent on Bat and Bullpen. Maybe a Downs and Dotel, Jim Salisbury on CSM says Rube was close to deal on Dotel but LA beat us out.Probably could have had him for a "B" prospect,on top of package for Jays players.

15-Day DL stint retro to SUN 8/1 puts him back for first game against SF in CBP

Lowell is having an awful season, but he's been tearing up triple A during his rehab stint (11 for 22 with four homers and an insane 1.700 OPS). At the right price (a marginal minor league prospect plus the Red Sox picking up most of his remaining salary), he'd be worth the gamble.

Uh, if he is out for 10 more days, that effectively is like the 15 day DL. List him if you need to, Charlie, we could use the extra roster spot.

Rizzotti doesn't sound like a bad idea. He's been hitting the heck out of the ball all year. Maybe he stays hot? Although it's going to be against better pitching.

very bad luck for Howard but... That's just poor base running. First and second two out. the ball is hit weakly in front of him. There is no way the right fielder throws home because werth is way too fast and he doesn't need to read the ball with two outs, he's running on contact. The only play the right fielder has is to try to catch Howard rounding the bag, which he did. Just run straight to the bag, period. You're now in scoring posistion with two outs. In a 162 game season these little, BIG things add up. It would have helped him to pick up his third base coach. Base running is a lost art. Still have to love the "heart' of this team. Keep grinding!

Play Gload at first base ...he will do well...Phillies Phil=ins have been good! Play more small ball ...thats what won the last game!

Can we just avoid 2nd base in the future - Utley, Howard, Victorino all hurt this year sliding (or not sliding in Howard's case) into 2nd base. Rollins went on the DL a few years ago d sliding back to second on a fake throw. Hit HRs avoid doubles and the DL.

Lowell stinks, i'd give up Moyer and thats it for him..he's hittin .500 in AAA because he has AAA bat speed. i'd rather have Gload at first and polanco at second with the late inning 3rd base defense that Cholly has found. Prolly gotta bring somebody up though..the bench is comin around a little with more at bats..we should keep that going and say no thanks to Lowell. it will be interesting to see who they bring up. Rizzotti would be cool, but a huge surprise.

El Zorro - your post is a joke, not to mention erroneous. It was definitely bad baserunning (caused mostly by a brief lapse in concentration on Howard's part). Please watch the replay of the entire play again so that you can see the reality of the unfortunate incident.
