Howard may have torn Achilles tendon

POSTED: Saturday, October 8, 2011, 12:35 AM

The pain from Friday night's Game 5 loss could end up being felt into next season. First baseman Ryan Howard said doctors suspect he may have torn his Achilles tendon while trying to run out a groundout that ended the Phillies' 1-0 loss to the Cardinals in the decisive fifth game of the National League Division Series.

Howard will have an MRI Saturday, at which point a better prognosis should be known.

Recovery time usually depends on the severity of the injury. Some tears have sidelined athletes for 4 to 6 months, others longer.

Howard, who has battled bursitis near the tendon, said he felt a "pop" as he was running to first base. He also felt a burning sensation.

"I was trying to run, and I just felt this pop," Howard said. "The whole thing just went numb, like it was on fire. Just tried to keep going, and went down. It literally felt like I was on a flat tire. I tried to get up. Couldn't go."

No hard salary cap in MLB, 200 sell-outs @ citizens bank park, and at least one owner who is a BILLIONaire. Who cares about Howard's salary? There needs to be more flexability in the offense [small ball works, sometime, Charlie].

I hope the Howard injury is career-ending.

Howard and his apologists didn't have a leg to stand on before the injury.

    Hey Coloradoeagle:
How mean spirited can you get? You hope is injury is career ending? You need to get a life and hope no one is feeling the same way about you!

I hope it's not as bad as they are making it sounds, I like Ryan Howard. But if it is the worst possible scenario, and he is to miss next season, again I hope not, there are things the Phillies could do. They are sure to part ways with Ibanez, and they do have some starters they could trade, to solidify their bullpen, but the Phillies might have options with the 2 biggest free agents this off season, Fielder and Pujols that just happen to play Howard's position. What would Howard's injury, if season ending, have on the price for Fielder and Pujols?

Ryan Howard is a good man who tried his best. That it wasn't good enough doesn't mean he deserves the abuse he gets. You people who constantly criticize aren't fans you are front runners.

For $25M/year, he is being treated very kindly by the fans.

Do you people understand that Howard's contract is guaranteed at almost $25M a year for the forseeable future? He is our firstbaseman for a long time. Not Fielder or Pujols, forget it! You want to talk about leftfielders or shortstops, go ahead. Even third baseman. The Phils will resign Rollins for 3 years, Polanco will be fine after the surgery and Mayberry and Brown will platoon in left (maybe a July trade if they can't cut it). Oswalt is gone as is Lidge so they have the money to sign Madso (probably 5 years and $75M). Get used to it, this is your team and quit complaining, it's better than they have ever had in any of your lifetimes.

He plays like Moe Howard when it matters. maybe this will be a career ending injury so his insurance will pay off his contract and free money up to get someone decent.

way to go ruben amaro..signing howard to that ridiculous contract was a huge mistake and i among others pointed that out at the time, because there was no way you pay a 1 tool player that much money..i don't care if he hits 60 hr's a year,he's a total liability on the bases, can't run at all,is a below average fielder and cannot hit lefthanders..now they are saddled with this huge payout for the next whatever years to a declining athlete who may be out for a year or so..great job ruben

I wish I could have been there to help Ryan Hoawrd off the field. He's given us all some great memories this season...any of you Howard Haters remember Game ONE of this series? Get well, Ryno, and come back next season.

I hope he gets well soon and is just as good as he was in the playoffs.

And then trade him to Houston or somebody for a box of Peanuts & Crackerjax

The fate of Phillies was sealed when Amaro signed Cliff Lee. The pitching was already good enough to win. Think how much better this might have been by signing someone like Beltre to play third and maybe a Lance Berkman. Perhaps the injury to will turn out be a blessing in disguise by moving Mayberry to first and finally finding out if Brown can play. We have good run for five years but now is the time to start thinking about the future. Time for everyone to move on
