How Cole Hamels' new contract fits into the payroll moving forward

POSTED: Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 1:19 PM

Lots of talk about how much money the Phillies have tied up in X amount of players now that Cole Hamels has signed a six-year, $144 million contract extension

Here is how the roster sets up for next year:

*projected

Lineup

Jimmy Rollins SS - $9.5 million

Chase Utley 2B - $12.125 million

EMPTY (3B/LF/CF)

Ryan Howard 1B - $25.0 million

Carlos Ruiz C - $3.45 million

Hunter Pence - $14.0 million*

EMPTY (3B/LF/CF)

EMPTY (3B/LF/CF)

Rotation

Cole Hamels LHP - $24.0 million

Cliff Lee LHP - $24.0 million

Roy Halladay RHP - $20.0 million

Vance Worley RHP - $.515 million*

Kyle Kendrick RHP - $3.75 million

Bullpen

Jonathan Papelbon RHP - $12.5 million

Antonio Bastardo LHP - $1.5 million*

Jake Diekman RHP - $.485 million*

EMPTY

EMPTY

EMPTY

Bench

Laynce Nix LHB/OF/1B - $1.25 million

John Mayberry Jr. RHB/OF - .515 million*

Freddy Galvis - $.485 million*

EMPTY (Backup Catcher)

EMPTY (Bench bat)

All of that adds up to $153.075 million for 16 players, with nine spots left to fill. Add another $10 million for player benefits, which count against the luxury tax threshold, and the Phillies are $14 million under the $178 million threshold.

But club president David Montgomery acknowledged today that the club "may have to" exceed that threshold, which increases to $189 million in 2014. The penalty for a first-time offender like the Phillies would be under $3 million on a $190 million payroll, so the tax is not cost prohibitive. How far over the threshold they can go remains to be seen, and will dictate how, exactly, they can upgrade the roster moving forward.

Lineup
Jimmy Rollins SS – $9.5 million
Chase Utley 2B – $12.125 million
Ryan Howard 1B – $25.0 million
Carlos Ruiz C – $6.0 million
Domonic Brown LF – .480 million
Center Field
Rotation
Cliff Lee – $24.0 million
Cole Hamels – $24.0 million
Roy Halladay – $20.0 million
Vance Worley – $.515 million
Kyle Kendrick – $3.75 million
Bullpen
Jonathan Papelbon – $12.5 million
Antonio Bastardo – $1.5 million*
Jake Diekman – $.485 million
Setup man

Bench
Laynce Nix – $1.25 million
John Mayberry Jr. – $.515 million
Freddy Galvis – $.485 million
Veteran backup catcher – $.800 million

You're thanking him for giving you BAD information? At least some of these salaries are wrong. Utley makes a couple million more than that next year. Ruiz's option for next year is $5 million not $3.45. I'm therefore guessing some of the other numbers are wrong as well. This article is total garbage without the correct numbers.

Actually Wild Bill.. the numbers are correct. When dealing with luxury tax, the deal is based on the Average Salary for the contract, not what the player makes in that given year.

How many straight sell-outs???? How much are they getting for parking??? And how much for a beer???

Nothing to see here folks....they can afford whatever they want.

I think Pence and/or Lee could be moved. If Pence, it will be this week and Lee could go in the offseason. That could give them some flexibility to try and improve.

I would be very surprised if Lee were to be moved. Lee and Halladay were big influences on Hamels' decision to stay. Lee's trade value is trending downward right now. Amaro got burned the first time to traded Lee and I don't see him going down that same road again.

Add to the above that Lee's contract is cost prohibitive for multiple years.

Having said all this, watch him get traded tomorrow.

Thanks, indeed. And while I'm at it, before I read that you too have left the fold, as two Eagles reporters have...please don't leave, David! You're the best baseball writer Philly has had in many decades, maybe even better than he-who-can-no-longer-be-named, but without his mean streak. And in many respects, you're are far better than him. Let's say you're the best since the year 1 B.C. You are the first writer covering any team who seems to look at things as a fan would, and I don't mean in the rah-rah sense, i mean in the way we wonder about salary caps and how rosters will fill out and what free agents might be available...so thanks, and please don't leave!

As for the numbers above, they don't match my spreadsheet, tho I obviously defer to yours. For instance, I had JRoll at $11m and C. Lee at $25m. But I've changed them to match yours.

Thanks again, David, for all you do! - Jamie McVickar

You are right about Rollins and Lee salaries. Howard's is off too. He's only supposed to get $20 million next year. Hamels will probably be backloaded to some degree as well.

Beleive it or not jt, the columnist knows more about MLB salary cap regulations than you do. Salary cap hits are calculated by the average annual value of the contract, not the actual amount that player gets paid in that particular season. Howard: $125 mil/5 = $25 mil Hamels: $144 mil/6 = $24 mil etc.

they should trade amaro, he's already jerked lee around enough. KK and worley are enough of a question mark for the four and five spot.

yeah I am sure that everyone will be jumping at Cliff Lee. With that dangerous just under 4 ERA and that huge price tag.

Moving Pence is a mistake--his only problem this year is that he wasn't Howard or Utley in their prime, and he was asked to be. Move him to LF, where his shaky fielding is no longer an issue, and he's a productive and useful player who looks good in the lineup as long as he isn't asked to be "the guy." If you lose him, just as with Hamels and Lee, you have to go out and get someone exactly like him. So, what's the point of moving him unless you get a really, really great deal for him?

Here's the deal. If they aren't prepared to pay him like he is Utley and Howard in their prime, then the time to move him is now while they can get something. With Pence, they either should lock him up for 4 years $60-$70 million or ship him out tomorrow. There can be no in-between.

According to Cot's contracts and every other media outlet and report I have seen, Jimmy Rollins' earns $11 million per year for 2012-2014 with an $11 million vesting option (not on DL at the end of 2014, 600 plate appearances in 2014 or 1,100 in 2013-14) for 2015. Why does Murphy keep saying Rollins gets $9.5 million per year?

$9.5 mil a year is the cap hit for luxury tax purposes. While he is being paid $11 mil per year for three years, the fourth year is a player option at $5 mil, a team option at $8 mil or if he meets the vesting criteria it is for $11 mil. Therefore the guaranteed portion of the contract is 3 years at $11 mil per = $33 mil plus the $5 mil player option makes it $38 mil divided by 4 = $9.5 mil

now is not the time to move cliff lee. his value is at an all time low. unless you prefer to buy high sell low, you keep him. if they move lee now, that will be the third time the phils have screwed up with a player named cliff lee. based on the ichiro and ramirez deal, now may be the time to buy regardless of our ability to make the playoffs this year. I would much prefer upgrades in the starting lineup than starting pitching. having charlie manuel as your manager and a lineup with no power is like running the wide 9 and having no linebackers. I honestly dont see where this team is headed regarding strategy. based on who is signed through next year, looks like patchwork to fill left field, center field, third base, and the bull pen. more of the same next year? what amarro has in bold stealth moves, seems like he lacks the same in long term strategy.

The thing that scares me is "Kyle Kendrick RHP - $3.75 million." Whose bright idea was that?

mayberry makes 800K this year - so next year is less,
kyle is at 7.5 million i thought?

thome was a steal at 1 million - he was the reason we even closely survived the america league games

Phillies don't seem to have much of a game plan. Had they signed Hamels before the Cain deal, Hamels could have been signed for less. They also way overpaid with Papelbon --- Amaro wanted to set the market. He did indeed. In addition to roster tweaks, Phillies better hire themselves better front office personnel because Amaro has been a disaster.

So tell me, how do you know that Hamels would have signed for less? Did you ever think he and is agent were waiting for the market to be set? Any baseball person with a functioning brain understood that Cole was in no hurry to sign the extension in spring training. You should try not to comment on things you know very little about.

What about Stutes in the bullpen? Based on low cost, I'm sure he'll have a spot.

Dogbiscuitthedope (and you're living up to your name), the Cain signing set the market for other Cain-like pitchers, ala Hamels. Every baseball person with a functioning brain has written extensively about this very point. If the Phillies had a long range game plan, signing Hamels last year would have saved them not only money, but also the distraction of the past three weeks. It only serves to underscore a team without much of a long-range plan.

I'll type slower this time so maybe you can follow along. They cannot sign Hamels unless he is willing, if he wanted to test free agency should they have held a gun to his head and forced him to sign? "Saved them the distraction of the last three weeks", LOL, um whatever you say

Good information here, Murph. Hard to believe the Phillies are seriously concerned about the luxury tax. Hopefully they'll be a bit more realistic about what they need next season. Also, agree that Halladay and Lee probably were factors in Hamels' decision. And it's not like Lee is a bust like Barry Zito, who has had some real ugly seasons to go with some outrageous money. Rod Nichols might be a good switch in pitching coaches for Lee, and all of the pitchers, for that matter....Unload Dubee-ous.

With all of these long-term contracts, the bigger question is 2014. 2013 will be the big payroll year, but if the owners can swallow that, then they'll either clear or reduce Utley's and Halladay's $32m in 2014.

I love this, thanks for putting it together. Here are things to keep in mind.

Brown plays left and bats 7th...cheap
    Kratz back up catcher....cheap
    Stutes, Herndon, DeFratus, Horst....cheap

whoever they get to play third or center will hit 8th....cheap

So they spend a bunch of money on a 3 hole hitter and set up man. That is all they really need to do with the team as it stands now.

I loved your idea a couple weeks ago, trade Pence for prospects then flip some of the prospects to SD for Headley to play 3B and bat 3rd, sign Swisher to bat fifth and play right, sign a Cody Ross type to bat 8th and play center.

    Rollins
    Utley
    Headley
    Howard
    Swisher
    Chooch
    Brown
    Ross (or someone like him)

not bad....there is NOTHING out there as far as thridbasemen go. Ruben is going to have to get creative.

Phils TV contract is up in 2015. They have the highest local ratings in baseball. Guess where all the money that they need will eventually come from? Can you say pay up Comcast?

NickM, I like that lineup a lot except I would prefer to have someone better defensively in center.
