Rookie of the Year candidate J.A. Happ has been scratched from his scheduled start because of a mild oblique strain. The lefthander said he was injured during batting practice Saturday night.

“It was a freak thing,” he said. “I don’t know. I have no idea. I do a lot of stuff to prevent stuff like this from happening. Not to be available is frustrating.”

Happ (10-4, 2.77) conceded that injuries such as this can be unpredictable but was hopeful that by skipping this start he could return sooner rather than later.

“I’m trying to take the right approach here and try to knock it out before it gets worse,” he said. “I’d be really frustrated if I did try to go today and it ended up being six or seven starts instead of one or two or whatever.”

Veteran Jamie Moyer started in Happ’s spot. Moyer has not started since being pulled from the rotation to make room for Pedro Martinez. Moyer has made three relief appearance, including pitching well in two relief outings when Martinez starts were cut short by rain. Moyer is 12-9 with a 5.07 ERA this season.
