Quick update on the search for a (nother) fifth starter:

J.A. Happ is listed as the probable starter for Thursday, meaning whoever the Phillies call-up likely won't get the nod until Friday or Saturday. This opens the possibility that Rodrigo Lopez, who was a solid starter for the Orioles once upon a time and has pitched well in his last three starts at Lehigh Valley, could get the call. Conventional wisdom suggests it will be either Carlos Carrasco or Andrew Carpenter, but don't count out Lopez.

Jamie Moyer could start Friday on normal rest, so it isn't certain when the newbie will get the call.

More later. . .

Hum Murph. Wouldn't it be better to give Happ an extra day off after pitching a complete game? I know he was very economical with his pitches, but he also had those extra warm up pitches after his usual 6 innings. That's another extra 45 to 50 (or maybe more) pitches he wasn't used to. Just a thought.

the mention of lopez as a possibility made me cringe at first but he could very well beat the depleted mets

of course they'll call up lopez. the sillies aren't going to start the clock running on carrasco, carpenter or drabek

A lot of well founded concern for pitching, but what about another righthanded batter off the bench? Getting tired of watching Coste whiff

Didnt the Phils have Burrell traded for Lopez at one time, but Burrell used his no trade clause to block it?

heinz guardian, no sorry, your stupid comment is not why any of them won't get called up. carrasco may not be ready, Carpenter, has already pitched in the majors, and Drabek is less than a year off TJ surgery. if the Phils thought one of them would be the best option, they would call them up.

hey scars73- you know absolutely nothing, zero, zip, nada about the salary capped world that is today's sports.....heinz guardian is right on, on his asessment of the callup situation, since carasco or carpenter are not lighting the world on fire, there is absolutely no way in the world that even Amaro would do something so stupid as to start the clock on either of these two.....Lopez is the man unless they decide to throw Park one last bone and let him start; in which case Lopez goes to long relief, guaranteed

You are both idiots maddy and Heinz. Carpenter already has pitched this year in the majors, so any clock you are talking about has already kicked in. Secondly, no team with playoff hopes is going to worry about if their prospect is arbi elegiable 2 days earlier. Only if they were being called up for long term usage (like Howard was, or Happ was last year) does this clock begin to matter. As proof of this, see how many different rookie pitchers have been called up this year already: carpenter, Bastardo, Escalona, etc

Maddy - Take a look at Carpenter's numbers since he got sent back down after his one bad ML start. He's been pretty good. Though he seems to give up the longball more than Lopez, he's been much more consistent. I can't see any way they pull Carrasco now - he's only had 2 good starts in a row, the previous 2 were pretty darned bad.

Maddy, kindly listen to the B man. He is the ONLY one in DC who knows what he is talking about. Tks B, keep it up.

i am man enough to admit when i see the valid points of the other side of the argument, however, i still believe that Lopez will get the call because of his experience and carpenter's propensity for the long ball....still, don't discount Park, believe it or not they got Park because he has a very good record in the dog days (or daze now) of summer and they might just throw him one last bone here

Lopez makes the most sense. He's Major League-tested, at least. Bring him up, give him 4-5 starts and see what he does. Worst case is he gets lit up like anyone not named Happ or Hamels and you either pull off a trade or give Carrasco his shot.

They need Park in the pen to eat innnings with Condrey out. Too bad they had to use him in an inning that mattered last night...that's never going to go well.
