Should Happ have won the award?
Yes
No

Phillies lefthander J.A. Happ finished second. in the voting for National League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Florida Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan won the award, outpointing Happ, despite Happ appearing on all 32 ballots.

Coghan got 17 first-place votes, six for second and two for third for 105 points. He was not on two ballots. Happ had 10 first-place votes, 11 seconds and 11 thirds for a total of 94 points.

Coghlan led NL rookies in batting average (.321), runs (84), hits (162), doubles (31), total bases (232), multihit games (51) and on-base percentage (.390) in becoming the third Marlins player honored, joining Dontrelle Willis (2003) and Hanley Ramirez (2006).

Happ was 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA and topped NL rookie pitchers in innings (166), strikeouts (119), complete games (3) and shutouts (2).

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson (11-4, 2.89 ERA) received two first-place votes and ranked third overall with 37 points. Also receiving two first-place votes was Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (.282, 12 HR, 54 RBI, 22 SB), who was fourth with 25 points. Congrats to Happ -- but anybody who left Coghlan off their ballot should not be allowed to vote next year.

Happ and Coughan both had great seasons. Hopefully JA will have a great Phillies career with over 100 wins.

Happ was a pitcher but really, he had more to do with his team's success than a Marlin position player.

Happ's ROY loss to Florida rookie just another sign that the Phillies get no respect from rest of nation.

Who is Chris Coghlan? He's the quietest Rookie of the Year I've ever have never heard of. They should call him "Mr. Cellophane." Even Hanson was more deserving. Sports writers...what do they know? The most provincial judges in the nation.

In votes like this, I'm reminded of Branch Rickey's comments to Ralph Kiner, who asked for a raise after leading the league in homers: "We could have finished last without you." Meaning: Coghlan had nice stats, but did he make a difference in the Marlins season? You take Happ away from the Phillies they might not win the division. You take Coghlan away from the Marlins, so they might finish fourth or fifth instead of third? Who cares?

The Rookie of the Year is not the Most Valuable Rookie. It's for the rookie with the best season. I love what JA happ did for the Phillies this season and thought he should have had a regular turn in the playoff rotation. However, Chris whatever his name is from Florida clearly had a better season and deserved the award. He hit .321 for a major league team over a full rookie season. If you've never heard of him, than it's a good thing you're not voting. They do play baseball outside of Philadelphia.

Let me get this straight .... Happ's peers voted him NL Rookie of the Year ..... But the writers chose Coghlan? .... Don't get me wrong, I think Coghlan was well deserving ..... But it's like voting for an MVP from a team that finished 10 games out of first place ..... Going 12-4 with an ERA below 3.00 for a team that finished in first place has to account for something more than finishing second.

Perhaps if Happ had a chance to start in the post season he would have won.

Happ could have won if he was not so massively misused. I have never seen someone who should have been the star starter on a team jerked around - two years in a row now.
