J.A. Happ already has been named the National League’s top rookie by The Sporting News. The Phillies lefthander has also won that honor from his peers with the MLB Players Choice Award.

He’ll find out Monday if he will add the most prestigious of these awards to his resumé when the Baseball Writers Association of America announces the results of its voting for National League Rookie of the Year.

Happ led all qualifying pitchers in innings pitched (166), complete games (three) and strikeouts (119) while tying Cubs righthander Randy Wells in wins (12) despite starting the season in the bullpen. His 2.93 earned run average was second only to Braves righthander Tommy Hanson.

Also expected to receive consideration in an unusually crowded field are: Marlins leftfielder Chris Coghlan, Brewers infielder Casey McGehee, Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen and outfielder-first baseman Garrett Jones, Cardinals outfielder Colby Rasmus and Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra.

I miss baseball. How long until spring training, Dave.

Something tells me Coughlin will be tough to beat, but Happ is deserving if he wins it (despite the fact that Happ got one vote out of 20 ESPN "experts", to Coughlin's 12).

I miss baseball already. How many days to pitchers and catchers?

It should be McCutchen, but it'll probably be Coughlan.

why does the writers award hold more weight then the players award??? I value the opinion of the players he plays against far more then the writers incapable of playing who tend to vote with an agenda...Players voted: HAPP is N.L. ROY!!!!!

I would consider an award from my peers much more prestigious than an award from writers who only see one team play for the most part, and don't know the game as well as the players. Happ ROY

Big Happ fan. If you look at his minor league record except for the year he was having arm problems it's not a great surprise what he acomplished. Will get tough run from Coughlin.

JA deserves it but he's got a lot of competition. Coghlan fell flat on his face his first tour of duty, then he got things together bigtime. It will be interesting to see how the vote unfolds. What I don't get about Happ is why the phils kept him if they didn't even feel comfortable starting him in the playoffs?

Eagles are their usual underachieving (plus severely banged up)selves; Sixers are middle of the pack at best; Flyers tickets are so expensive, they don't care if you buy them or not. WHEN DOES SPRING TRAINING START???????????

Ok, listen everyone: the Tampa Bay Rays are the only team that has listed a reporting date for pitchers and catchers. It's Feb. 19th. So figure the Phillies will begin in Clearwater around that time. So, about 14+ weeks.

Hey, Murph, here's something to consider. In 2005, Ryan Howard was Rookie of the Year. In 2006 he was MVP. In 2007, Rollins was MVP. In 2008, Hamels was MVP of NLCS and WS. We all know Utley is headed in that direction. And now a potential Rookie of the Year for 2009. This club is fat with home grown BIG TIME talent. There's gotta be a story there, particularly comparing them to the Yankees. I know the Yankees have a lot of home grown talent, but none of their players, except for Jeter, is as good as our home grown guys.
