Hamels scratched due to flu; Madson set for first spring start

POSTED: Wednesday, March 12, 2008, 2:35 PM

Cole Hamels was scheduled to pitch in a minor league game today at the Carpenter Complex, but was sidelined due to a bout with the flu. It isn't clear when the lefty, who has a 12.60 ERA in two spring appearances, will get back on the mound. The Phillies face Cincinnati in a rare spring night game at Bright House Field. Reliever Ryan Madson will get the start, but don't read too much into it. Although the lanky righty has started before, the Phillies aren't looking at him to join the rotation. They simply want him to face some top-of-the-line hitters that would normally be on the bench by the time he pitches.

Here are the line-ups:

Reds (8-7)

1. LF Norris Hopper

2. DH Ryan Freel

3. CF Corey Patterson

4. RF Chris Dickerson

5. 3B Andy Phillips

6. 1B Scott Hatteberg

7. SS Jeff Keppinger

8. 2B Jerry Hairston, Jr.

9. C Alvin Colina

Phillies (4-9-1)

1. SS Jimmy Rollins

2. DH Greg Dobbs

3. 2B Chase Utley

4. 1B Ryan Howard

5. LF Pat Burrell

6. RF Geoff Jenkins

7. 3B Pedro Feliz

8. CF Jayson Werth

9. C Carlos Ruiz

Starters:

Bronson Arroyo vs. Ryan Madson
