Hamels lifted from game in fourth after being struck by line drive

POSTED: Thursday, April 23, 2009, 1:58 PM

Cole Hamels looked sharp for three innings, but gave up a two-run home run to Ryan Braun then was hit on the left side of his body by a line drive off the bat of Prince Fielder, forcing him to exit the game in favor of J.A. Happ.

Hamels was hit on the left shoulder. He was later declared to have a left shoulder contusion, which is another word for a bruise. The ball bounced off of his body and toward first base. Fielder was credited with an infield single.

After he was struck, Hamels put his hands on his thighs and bent over at the waist. After he was examined by pitching coach Rich Dubee and athletic trainer Mark Anderson, Hamels walked off the field.

Lefty J.A. Happ took over with one out in the fourth and the Phillies trailing 2-0.

Stay tuned for much more.

Baseballs are juiced this year. Home runs are way up all across the league. They want to get some 60+ HR guys again now that they can't use steroids. Selig needs a bigger payday next year.

Hamels has a left shoulder contusion, according to TMac.

Hope Cole's ok. Happ surely hasn't wasted away in the bullpen early in the season.

Noo! Glad it's just a bruise. I see we're still working to maintain our MLB lead in HRs given up. Wonder if johnnysanz is onto something - although it doesn't seem to be true of the Phillies batters, just our opponents and anyone playing in Yankee stadium.

Thanks for the explanation of what a contusion actually is. I thought it was a life threatening disease for a second there.

Ya, it's just a deep bruise. I remember knowing about it a lot when Iverson played like a whole year with one in his thigh that never went away lol.

Knock it off with those E A G L E S chants at the Park 5isaKing. I have hated the entire Eagles organization for five years now. Arrogance and stupidity. Somehow they think they have won something in the last ten years. Oh and "Five" is not a king. He will never win a championship. Get off the Phillies boards.

6-0, another HR to add to our total. And to think, two days ago I was feeling bad for the Brewers. Maybe we'll have a rally yet. 6 outs to get 6+ runs....

Well, it's too bad Dave Bush couldn't hold on to the no-hitter given that the Phils lost anyway. Still he pitched terrifically, must have felt good in front of his parents, close to home and all. Phils need to play better against the Fish, get a win streak going. And yes, Jimmy needs to get it going here. Lots of pressure to know that as you go, so does the team, but he seems to welcome the attention, so now it's time to be the leadoff HITTER, not Out-ter. GO Phils

Old mand Stairs came thru again. He erased the no-hitter and shutout with one swing, just hitting the RF pole.... The game over is BTW. 6-1 with only that hit. Time for a team meeting. Bush was throwing a fastball in the high 80s and a 70 curveball. I don't know how are the Phillies going to hit Johnson and the rest of the Marlins rotation starting tomorrow.

I agree, Zorro. I think this team needs to decide whether it's really serious about trying to defend their world championship. The starting pitching has been inconsistent but mostly bad. The bullpen has been inconsistent but mostly bad. The offense has been inconsistent and unpredictable. When they've scored a lot of runs, it has often been because the opposing team is walking guys or making errors all over the place. It seems to me that the team as a whole has a lackadaisical attitude. "Ho hum, we won the World Series alst year. That's good enough." If there is a leader somewhere in that clubhouse, it's beyond time that he steps up and gets this team on track.

Hamels wouldve only given up the 2 runs, he had the same amt of K's today as his other starts combined

what's up with the "don't-worry-about-it" offense (oh that's right, the vaunted Brewers staff minus Sabathia and Sheets)

Last year the Phils were shutout at least twice when Cole pitched. In four of the loses, the Phils scored 2 runs or fewer, yet if you look at their individual stats, we should have won more games than we have. OH MY GODDDDDDD! We're turning into the METS!!!!!!!!!!!!! PHILS please prove me wrong!!!!!!

David Murphy ... I have a question you can ask our manager. "What is he going to do to help Howard handle the 65-70MPH breaking pitches he is swinging through?" After Swindle's performance the other day I'd say the whole league sat up and took notice of how bad Ryan looked. If he says he has to stay back and wait on the pitch to get deeper into his swing that is not an answer. What will they do to help him hit those pitches? He is the hitting GURU.
