Hamels laughs off sprained ankle, is optimistic about prognosis
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
The look on Cole Hamels face as he disgustedly flipped the ball to nobody in particular while walking off the mound said it all.
Five days after a line drive off the bat of Prince Fielder knocked him out of his last start in the fourth, the ace lefthander appeared to roll his ankle while fielding a bunt, sending him to the dugout with one out in the fifth inning.
Speaking after the game, Hamels said he hopes to make his next start, although manager Charlie Manuel cautioned that the team would not know the odds of him doing so until it sees how the ankle responds.
“Things are snowballing for the worse for me, but the team is winning,” said Hamels, who pitched a career high 227 1/3 innnings last season but through four starts has accumulated just 21 1/3. “It’s one of those things where some random things happen. It’s unfortunate, but truly nothing has been too serious. The last one wasn’t bad. . .This ankle injury, it’s not severe. I’m not planning on missing a start. Obviously we have to see how it feels in the next couple days, but I think it helps that we have an off day. So I’m on a six day recovery period instead of five.”
How can anyone root against such a good kid and incredible talent, the likes of which Philly hasn't seen in decades? Schilling was NOT a good guy, so saying Hamels is harder to love than Schilling is a compliment to the kid. These nasty naysayers must be Mets fans reading Philly papers again, seeing as their beloved Mets choked again tonight and they can't bear to read their own bad news fishwraps. trishiae
Sucks Hamels couldn't get a couple more outs for that first W of the year. He had a win tonight in the bag. We're in decent shape right now for all the starting pitching troubles we've had. 11-8 is a nice start, but we need the rotation to settle down now. LJL - can you hit us back with another nursery rhyme post when you get a chance??? That here a nick, there a nick rhyme was an instant classic. GHOSTPHAYCE
I agree that the Hamels-haters on here must be Mets fans. Anybody who would judge Hamels for two freak incidents, considering that they could have happened to any other pitcher and that he DID NOT whine about them after the fact (he was upset when he had to leave the game but you would be if you had to leave the game right before you got the win too) MUST be Mutts! betsy72
This guy is one of the greatest pitchers in Phillies' history. The good news is that despite the latest setbacks, each start he has pitched well longer. citizenkane
It's amazing how many morons can type.......I'm surprised many of you can find the keys....... Mark1npt
Just saw on BBTN that Lidge is out for a few games with his knee. Hopefully this wont be a long term issue but tendenitis can stay around a while. shap80

Les Walrond released a long time ago, there is no stud lefty in the I-Pig pen, expect Majewski or Koplove to come up if Hamels hits the pen. RodeoJones
way too early in his career to call him gritty. pretty-boy, yes.... loser, no. He is a gamer, emotional, questionable, remarkable. HIGH RISK = HIGH REWARD. BTW, have you noticed the timeliness of their hitting? Playoffs-- there. World Series? Probable-- by the looks of our power. Pitching won it last season, hitting wins it this season. More exciting game that way anyway. The Fightin's light-up any MLB Bullpen most of the time. Period. Forget the opposing starters. Rollins= .400 baseball. NOSTRADAMUS tonygargano
Relax Rodeo. I wondered where Walrand ended up ?? Apparently the ex-Giant in the PigsPen (Sty?) is a righty. Are you calmed down yet ? If so, consider investing in pork belly futures. mick314
It would be tough to roll through four pitchers that you can't reasonable expect more than six innings from (moyer, park, struggling blanton, fresh from the pen Haap). Especially with the anchor of the bullpen being out so everyone is bumped up a slot. If Hamels needs the DL, they need to bring up another pitcher, maybe put Lidge on the DL to make room. And atleast it wasn't his right ankle. You worry more about muscles in drive legs, joints in the landing leg. Stand on one leg and jump out onto the other a hundred times if you don't believe me.
