Hamels could throw bullpen as early as Saturday

The Phillies were very pleased with Cole Hamels' long-toss session today. He tossed with Jamie Moyer at a distance of 150 feet. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan was encouraged that Hamels was able to throw at that distance without any ill-effects.

Hamels will long-toss again tomorrow. If that session goes well, he could throw off the mound on Saturday in preparation for his next Grapefruit League appearance.

"Today was a good sign," Amaro said.

Also, the team doesn't sound too concerned about Chan Ho Park's balky left hamstring, which occurred while delivering a pitch against the Cardinals on Sunday. Park threw a bullpen session today and, assuming his body responds well tomorrow, will make his next appearance on Saturday against the Twins at Bright House Field.

Spitting might be the best way to describe the weather here this morning at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. It's a nice complex, right across the street from Florida Atlantic University, home of the Owls.

Chase Utley has the day off today but could be back on the field tomorrow. His body seems to have responded well from the recent heavy workload, which included back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
