Hamels to throw 'pen session Wednesday

Cole Hamels was too fatigued to face hitters on Thursday. But apparently his strength is back: he's scheduled to return to the mound with a side session on Wednesday.

If you peaked into the game on TV or checked the box score this afternoon, you saw something familiar: the Phillies failing to score runs this spring.

Following Monday's 8-1 loss to the Braves, the Phillies have scored three runs or fewer in 9 of 13 games this spring, and 2 runs or fewer in 6 of 10 games in March. But, there was some encouraging news after the game.

Cole Hamels will throw off the mound for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday, according to manager Ryne Sandberg. Hamels is scheduled to throw a side bullpen session, his first since two Saturdays ago.

Hamels, who entered camp behind schedule after battling biceps tendinitis in November, was progressing toward facing hitters last week before putting the breaks on his throwing program. Hamels said his body felt fatigued following his last side session on March 1.

"I think I felt 35 pitches," Hamels said. "To my body it felt like a thousand."

Hamels said those words on Thursday, when he had been scheduled to face hitters for the first time this spring in a live batting practice session. Six days later, he'll return to the mound and reboot his rehab.

As long as Hamels progresses without another setback, there is a chance he could get into a Grapefruit League game within the next two weeks.

Both Jonathan Pettibone and Mike Adams will also throw Wednesday. Pettibone will face hitters in a live BP session while Adams will throw a side bullpen.
