Gose continues to shine

Over the last couple of weeks we have taken a look at the Phillies' personnel situation heading into the offseason. We will continue to do so, but first a quick look-in at the Arizona Fall League, where prospects from around the majors are competing in the annual developmental showcase. The Phillies' contingent is short on top-shelf talent, but one name that jumps out at you is center fielder Anthony Gose, whom the club shipped to Houston in the Roy Oswalt trade last July.

The speedy center fielder is hitting .290 with a .371 OBP with four doubles, three triples, three home runs and three stolent bases in 62 at-bats. This after former catching prospect Travis D'Arnaud hit .311/.371/.542 with 21 home runs for Double-A New Hampshire during the minor league season. The Blue Jays acquired D'Arnaud in the Roy Halladay trade, then netted Gose after Houston flipped him for Brett Wallace.

With Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz both entering the final year of their contracts, it's a reminder that the Phillies have given up significant young talent to maximize their opportunity of winning another World Series during this current window.

The only current Phillie of note thus far has been Cody Overbeck. Plenty of scouts and personnel people think Overbeck has a bat that can play some kind of role in the big leagues. The question is his position. He has not succeeded at third base. The Phillies tried him in the outfield, but he was nowhere near big league ready at the end of last season. In the Fall League, he is playing first base, where through 11 games he is 11-for-36 (.306) with a .444 on base percentage, a double, a triple, and nine strikeouts in 36 at-bats.

@ zeke - can we take your word for it? Are you sure? Because I'd hate for you to make such a statement without some way to see into the future. May I ask what your opinion on Brown was a year ago? Amazing.

Why make a story about prospects we traded away?? This article is a waste of time that doesnt do any of us as fans any good. Why not next write a story on the career of Fergie Jenkins or Julio Franco or even Ryne Sandberg since you wanna write about prospects we gave up in trades. Nobody cares, they arent here anymore and wont be part of this organization so lets move on.

@Smith/Tulsa, Murphy's written about traded prospects who aren't doing well to validate Amaro's judgment. This is part of the other side of those stories. I like balanced reporting that looks at both sides. If you guys don't, you knew the subject of this article within the first paragraph. Stop reading and click another article, don't hurt yourself.

I remember the many posts back in 2007-8 that polled Phillies fans on whether they would rather have a gauranteed World Series winner followed by 10 mediocre seasons or a legitimate WS contender for the next 10 years. Guess what? Guess what again?

Tyson Gilles, if he can stay healthy, will be a better major league player than Gose. So we have to relax here. Didn't here anyone complaining when we acquired Halladay, Lee, Or Ozwalt!!

Valle is the heir appearant to Chooch. Meanwhile, Kratz will be given a chance to back up chooch. In the end, years from now, we all will be able to rate the "prospects" in the majors vs. the "now" major league talent received in return. So far, Phillies RAJ hasn't done us wrong. Haven't seen a Ryan Sandberg pop up at Cleveland, Toronto, or Houston. Michael Bourne has proved to be a big league center fielder, but Lidge did pitch a perfect 2008 and netted us Phillies a 2008 World Series rign. In the end, you take the ring and deal with the consequences of a trade. How'd Happ do last year? Carasco had TJ surgery, Marson is stuck in the minors, Donald is barely a utility guy. The only trade (again, Blanto's play in 2008 was key) that looks bad on paper was the trade to obtain Blanton (Gio Gonzalez, Josh Outman are dynamite pitchers, but would have been no help in 2008). Keep drafting well, developing well, and making smart moves.

Lost some good prospects in the Cliiff Lee trade also. You don't get top shelf players for bench warmers.
