Gose continues to shine

Over the last couple of weeks we have taken a look at the Phillies' personnel situation heading into the offseason. We will continue to do so, but first a quick look-in at the Arizona Fall League, where prospects from around the majors are competing in the annual developmental showcase. The Phillies' contingent is short on top-shelf talent, but one name that jumps out at you is center fielder Anthony Gose, whom the club shipped to Houston in the Roy Oswalt trade last July.

The speedy center fielder is hitting .290 with a .371 OBP with four doubles, three triples, three home runs and three stolent bases in 62 at-bats. This after former catching prospect Travis D'Arnaud hit .311/.371/.542 with 21 home runs for Double-A New Hampshire during the minor league season. The Blue Jays acquired D'Arnaud in the Roy Halladay trade, then netted Gose after Houston flipped him for Brett Wallace.

With Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz both entering the final year of their contracts, it's a reminder that the Phillies have given up significant young talent to maximize their opportunity of winning another World Series during this current window.

The only current Phillie of note thus far has been Cody Overbeck. Plenty of scouts and personnel people think Overbeck has a bat that can play some kind of role in the big leagues. The question is his position. He has not succeeded at third base. The Phillies tried him in the outfield, but he was nowhere near big league ready at the end of last season. In the Fall League, he is playing first base, where through 11 games he is 11-for-36 (.306) with a .444 on base percentage, a double, a triple, and nine strikeouts in 36 at-bats.

Losing D'Arnaud will hurt... but it def is a win-win for all as we picked up the best pitcher in baseball!

Prospects for established stars is, generally, a trade I will always make. It's the difference between MAYBE ... and IS! Period.

Also, a nice little trade that gets overlooked - flipping Golson for Mayberry Jr.

Win some. Lose some. The nature of trades.

minor league success does not always translate into major league success. It would be nice to have both, but at least we got something of value in return.

Yes they look good now in the minors but will it materialize to the bigs? Many just don't. I, too, will take the seasoned established vet over a prospect. Prospects look good on trades.

Gose hit .253 in Double A with 16 HRs and 70 stolen bases. Just 21, he looks like he will be a very good major league player.

If Oswalt signs elsewhere, do the Phils get a compensatory pick?

@ p even - No...the compensatory pick rule is only when a player is arbitration eligible, the team offers arbitration, and the player declines and elects to become a free agent. roy O wasn't arb eligible, and the phils simply declined an option and choose instead to pay him $2M for the pleasure of not having to pay him $16M in 2012.

No, because they won't offer arbitration.

I didn't mind losing Gose at first, since I never thought he'd have the on base skills to be a successful big leaguer. But he certainly is looking good, and his defense is top notch.

D'Arnaud looks like the better prospect easily but he looked small to me at Reading last year when I was almost next to him. We love Sal Fa-sa-no !!

Interesting. D'Arnaud busted his thumb in World Cup action for Team USA in Panama a week or so ago. Tuffy Gosewisch took over and tonight will be the Team USA catcher in the Pan Am Games Gold Medal Game against Canada in Mexico. Saw Gose in the Eastern League playoffs against Reading in the first round. He hit .179.(5 for 28) over both rounds of the playoffs. Sometimes they look good and some times they don't.

Whenever you trade prospects for top ML proven players, some of the prospects may turn out to be good players later in the majors. That is to be expected. So far, none have, but a couple look like they have a shot. However, as long as the ML talent you get in those trades helps your club, especially for several years, the trade has to be viewed as a good one.

Wow. 12 people and 12 rational comments about losing the minor-league talent. I'm sorry, this is Philadelphia, is it not?

Andrew! This is what you do during your day? Troll articles about minor leagers on Philly.com? Is the like product in NY that pathetic? And I do enjoy how you insinuate that you know Philadelphia's fans. My friend....go pretend you have a life. You are embarrassing yourself.

I'll give andrew the benefit of the doubt as I too am amazed that the negativity isn't swarming in reaction to this article, as it normally would. Strange you would jump to such conclusions. Just because one doesn't live in the Philly area doesn't mean they don't know Phillies fans. Could be an expat as myself.
