Gordon on DL

We've got a lot of news down at the ballyard today, but the biggest may also be the latest. After the game, the Phillies informed us that they were placing Tom Gordon on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. It sounds like it isn't a serious injury, rather an opportunity to take advantage of the All Star break to get Gordon healthy. He hasn't pitched on back-to-back days in a month, and has allowed eight runs in his last six appearances, with six of them earned.

“He’s had a little tenderness and been trying to pitch through it,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “We felt like that if we shut him down and get him to the All-Star break that he should be up to 100 percent.”

Gordon had allowed eight runs in his last six appearances. He did not pitch for 11 days in mid-to-late June because of soreness.

The Phillies recalled lefthander R.J. Swindle from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take his roster spot.. Unlike his first stint with the club, which lasted one day and zero appearances, the reliever could see his first action today thanks to a tired Phillies bullpen.

“Flash doesn’t say too much but you can tell sometime how he is pitching if something is wrong,” Manuel said. “He’s had a little tenderness and we want to feel like if we can’t get him to 100 percent.”

Gordon is eligible to return July 21st, an off day for the Phillies. They are in New York to face the Mets the following day.

Frustrating loss for the Phils today.

They were 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
