Good News For Ruiz

The Phillies are confident enough in Carlos Ruiz's ability to rebound from a capsular strain in his knee that they do not have plans to fly another catcher out to meet the team in Milwaukee this weekend. Ruiz left the game in the fourth inning after laboring from first to third on a double by Wilson Valdez. The Phillies said later that he injured his knee in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Brad Hawpe.

"It's a day-to-day thing and we have an off day tomorrow, so this is good news," assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said.

Good news on the injury front has been been hard to find as of later. Set-up man Ryan Madson is on the 60-day disabled list and sidelined until at least July with a broken foot he suffered when kicking a chair in San Francisco. Lefthander J.A. Happ, expected to be a solid middle-of-the-rotation piece one season after finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting, has not pitched since April 15 and has yet to throw off the mound. Closer Brad Lidge returned to Philadelphia today to have his stiff right elbow examined.

Short stop Jimmy Rollins is nearing a return. Today, he went 3-for-6 in an extended spring training game, although he did not play in the field. He ran at full speed, sliding into second on a double, and reported no ill-effects, the Phillies said. He is scheduled to play in the field for the first time today.
