Full Phillies coaching staff returning
Daily News staff
All six of the Phillies’ major league coaches have agreed to contracts for the 2012 season, the Phillies announced today.
Mick Billmeyer (bullpen), Rich Dubee (pitching), Greg Gross (hitting), Pete Mackanin (bench), Sam Perlozzo (first base) and Juan Samuel (third base), along with bullpen catcher Jesus Tiamo, will resume their respective positions.
“I couldn’t be happier to have the whole staff back for another season,” Manuel said in a statement. “Their dedication and work ethic speak for themselves and they were a huge part of our 102 wins.”
Billmeyer, 47, is the longest-tenured member of the coaching staff after joining it in 2004 as the major league catching instructor.
The 2012 season will be his ninth with the Phillies and the eighth for Dubee, fourth for Mackanin and Perlozzo, third for Gross and second for Samuel.
Team Awesome, if my comments about Charlie are almost comical, then I'm happy because at least you're laughing. Oh, there are a few also making jokes about your manager. Feel free to insult them. And about the La Russa comment, well if Pujols doesn't misplayed the throw from Jay that allowed Andrus to be in scoring position and eliminating the DP in the process, maybe Tony would have not bring Rhodes to face Hamilton. And before that, maybe if Motte wouldn't have allowed a single to Kinsler, his first batter, and then forgot all about him and allowed him to steal second, and the proceeded to allow a solid single to Andrus, who was trying to bunt him over, maybe La Russa would have stayed with him to face Hamilton with no outs. The bottom line is Motte didn't have it last night. He blew the save without getting an out. And Rhodes has been getting lefties out during the playoffs. That was the right call. Period. EL Zorro- Disagree completely. Hamilton could barley rotate his lower half on his swings and Motte throws much harder than Rhodes (96 avg FB vs 88 avg FB this year). Motte also seemed to pitch better against lefties this year (FIP 3.20 vs over 5 for Rhodes; 2.25K/9 vs 1.25K/9 for Rhodes).
Also, the Cardinals were in a no doubles defense (which contrary to popular belief does not save runs). If they play regular defense, Kinsler's ball is probably (not definitely) caught. And that throw from Jay was bad.
TeamAwsome, you are thinking like Charlie. And where he is now? Motte was struggling big time. BTW, the throw wasn't that bad a throw. Pujols would tell you he should have made that play easily. It was in the middle of the infield. If he doesn't deflect that ball, no way Andrus would have made it to second. EL Zorro
Opps Where is he now? EL Zorro
This is what Pujols said about that play:
"As soon as I saw that big turn (around third) by Ian Kinsler I knew I had a chance to get him if I cut that ball and throw to third," Pujols said Friday. "He did take that big turn and I took my eyes off the ball and obviously I missed it. There is nothing I can do but move on and get ready to play tomorrow."

Please, don't embarrass yourself anymore. EL Zorro
I'd like to see Samuel be the firstbase coach. Perlozzo obvious is clueless about basestealing.... Erich H
El Zorro: you and anyone else who thinks Manuel should be fired should start following the Union or whatever Phill'y indoor lacrosse team is, because you obviously have no clue about baseball. A major league manager basically has two tasks over the course of a season:
1) Keeping his players loose and creating an environment where the players want to play on a daily basis, and 2) Knowing how and when to use the bullpen. Everything else is the responsibility of the players. They lost to the Cardinals because Cliff Lee had an off start in Game 2, and the offense slumped at the wrong time. A few minor upgrades and the Phillies will be a contender again next year. Being a contender doesn't guarantee anything in the playoffs, but it's a helluva lot better than where we were for most of this franchise's history! JD5
JD5, let's play ball and see who has a clue or not about baseball. EL Zorro
El Zorro:
If you played most of your life, think about how many games you played. Then think about how many were either won or lost by a manager's decision. Not many. It's a smaller percentage the higher level you get to. Was LaRussa any less of a manager when they were 9 games out heading into September? Even by his own admission he didn't think they had a chance. An injured Braves staff collapsed. The Phillies don't need a new manager or new hitting coach, they need a couple younger productive players. As for playing ball, you can have Tony as your manager bunting everyone into scoring position and batting the pitcher 8th. I'll take Charlie and play the game like men are supposed to play it. JD5- JD5- I think what Zorro is saying is that the more baseball you play, the more baseball you know. Therefore, by his own unintentional admission, Charlie knows more baseball than he does.
Hey RAJ...why fire Milt, when he was doing a much better job than Gregg. You are not a racist, are you? I notice most of the players you sign are of Spanish/Latin descent. shattereddreams- The Phillies should start charging Gomer Manuel the price of a seat for every game. Since all he does is sit in the dugout chewing free Double Bubble gum every game. This guy is totally clueless. There isn't a team in the majors that would have hired this buffoon. And what the hell does Sam do at first, except act as a valet, and collect batting gloves. jingles

1) I never said Pujols shouldn't have made the play, I just said the throw was bad. This was pointed out by many people (including Joe Posnanski) and Jay himself even said it wasn't a good throw (per Passan's stupid article: 'Jay said he “pulled it a little bit.')
2) I'm confused as to why Motte didn't have it. He gave up a bloop single to Kinsler when the Cards were in a no doubles defense with 0 outs. That's mind boggling strategy. Kinsler stole second (even after Motte threw over) but relievers are generally not good at holding runners on anyway. And Kinsler is really good- one of the best 2B on the bases anyway. Then Andrus singles. His stuff wasn't bad- the Rangers got a lucky hit and a solid hit. But neither ball was hit hard. Oh and up until that inning: Motte faced 28 batters in the playoffs: 0 hits 0 walks 0 runs 7Ks.
3) Charlie may be still managing if the bottom 6-7 hitters had an OBP above league average for the series! It's not like they got swept- they lost in game 5.
I hope I haven't embarrassed myself because I don't think Charlie was the problem like you seem to believe. But in case I have:

TeamAwesome
Doobey should go
Davey Lopes should come back.
Hitting coach makes no difference. These guys will swing the way they want until Charlie tells them to do differently and benches them when they don't listen. edfiero
