Fox Sports: Phillies among most aggressive in pursuit of Beltran

POSTED: Tuesday, July 19, 2011, 6:32 PM

Some more pre-trade-deadline fodder:

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, who usually has a pretty good handle on all things Phillies, is reporting that the Phils and Red Sox have been two of the most aggressive suitors for Mets' right fielder Carlos Beltran.

Beltran will be owed about $6 million as of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but the Mets are willing to pick up most of that tab if it results in a better package of prospects.

What would a Phillies line-up look like with Beltran?

  1. Jimmy Rollins SS
  2. Shane Victorino CF
  3. Chase Utley 2B
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Carlos Beltran RF
  6. Raul Ibanez LF
  7. Wilson Valdez 3B
  8. Carlos Ruiz C

That would change when Placido Polanco returns. Beltran is a switch-hitter, which would give the Phillies extraordinary balance.

David, Please do an article about Iron Pig Pitching and why Ryan Vogelsong got away, why Gordan went to the Yankies and now how we are about to lose Jason Grilli to Pittsburg.

Focusing on the negative? are you serious? What about your boy AJ Happ? Who was great here and boasts a 5.72 and a 3-11 record for Houston. Or Lou Marson who is hitting 248 with the Indians? Or Jason Knapp who still hasn't made it out of single A ball? Trading in pro sports is a game of chance. Get over yourself.

Despite the fact that Beltran hits better for average from the left side than the right, he has hit eight of his 14 home runs batting right-handed. He would balance out the lineup perfectly.

Dudeskins: really? REALLY? We have the best rotation in the majors, the best record in the majors, and you're worried about Ryan Vogelsong? And GORDON with an "O" who was already sent down by the Yankees? You're serious about this?

In case you havevt noticed Vogelsong is 7-1 leading the league in ERA 202 for the Giants, Gordons contract was sold to a Korean team and Grilli is 5-1 with the Pigs with a 1.93 Era. My question is not necessarily why they are not on the Phils roster but why are they going to the competition without us getting anything in return. REALLY, REALLY>

The issue with Vogelsong and Gordon is that each had a clause in their contract requiring their release if they were not brought up to the majors by a certain date. I'm not sure about Grilli's contract, but I would assume that it is the same issue.

Vogelsong was released on 7/15/2010 and posted the following numbers at Lehigh (stats from baseball-reference.com): 2-5 WL, 4.91 ERA, 1.705 WHIP, 1.873 K/BB. I don't remember what the Phillies pitching situation was at the time, but I doubt that they thought Vogelsong would be an upgrade over anyone else on their staff at that point and nobody would have known that he would turn it around. The Giants simply took a flyer on a guy they had drafted and were somewhat familiar with.

Gordon and Grilli sort of fall into the same category. Both were posting good numbers at AAA but aren't seen as upgrades to the current staff, so there wasn't much of a choice to make. No team is going to trade for a guy that will have to released in the next couple of weeks. At the time of Gordon's release the Phillies could have been called on him to make a spot start instead of Vance Worley, but Gordon is journeyman converted pitcher who only has two pitches, so I think the Phillies made the right decision in sticking with Worley, especially considering Gordon's performance with the Yankees. Assuming Grilli's contract has a similar clause, I doubt they see him as an improvement to their current staff, even over the likes of Kyle Kendrick.

Thanks Alex , that is the info I was looking for since I do not follow the minors at all. Seems like our scouting must be pretty good to find these guys not to mention all of the Pigs we already are seeing in the Bigs.

Phillies weren't the only team to let Vogelsong go. He was let go by the Pirates and Giants as well, so can't really blame the Phils on this one. Plus Alex with the nice and true stats. I predict by the end of the year, Vogelsong will crash back down to Earth in a great big ball of fail.

Carlos Beltran looks good in the 5 hole, but not as good as Hunter Pence. Why would the Phils go after Beltran, who is 34 years old with a history of injuries, making $17 million this year, a free agent next year, and currently hitting .287 with 14 homers and 59 RBIs, instead of Pence, who is 28 years old, making $6.9 million this year, under team control until 2014, and currently hitting .318 with 11 homers and 61 RBIs? If neither Pence nor Beltran are affordable, there's still Melky Cabrera who, as a 26 year old switch hitter and defensive stalwart who is hitting .294 with 11 homers and 53 RBIs, is a steal for $1.25 million a year. And if that doesn't make the lineup look better, the Phils could still do the unthinkable and bring the homesick Jason Werth and a boatload of cash back to Philly for a few top prospects.

If ur gonna through out the name Beltran then shoudlnt u talk about what we might have to give up? That part of the deal would be valuable to us minor league followers.

You are not the only one who realizes how good this kid is going to be. The ones that don't realize are the same fans that are worried about losing Jason Grilli.
