Four Phils file for arbitration
Daily News staff
It was simply a formality, but the Phillies four arbitration-eligible players were among 128 players who officially filed for salary arbitration on Friday.
Pitchers Joe Blanton and Chad Durbin, catcher Carlos Ruiz and outfielder Shane Victorino filed. Blanton made $5.475 million last year, Durbin $1.635 million, Ruiz $450,000 and Victorino $3.125 million.
The players and the Phillies must exchange salary figures by Tuesday. If the sides cannot work out a deal, hearings are scheduled to begin Feb. 1.
The Phillies had 10 arbitration-eligible players last year and avoided a hearing with all of them.
Comment removed.- Make deals if you can. I read that the average from last year's arbitration results aveage 175% increases league wide. Now the majority of those were for younger players making low amounts (like Ruiz), but it's hard to tell where an arbiter will go. Plus, if you avoid the confrontational nature of arbitration, everyone is more comfortable. verve
- I wish it was all soo easy.... You're probably right about Ruiz but I have a feeling Victorino is not gonna be here too much longer if Dom Brown and Anthony Gose perform because that money could be put into another pitcher or signing Howard again.. In the end it's gonna be up to whether they can keep Howard and I would say we need him more than we need Victorino... Wish we could keep them all but the Phillies we know aren't gonna do that.. - Of course all these guys need to be resigned. Victorino is a good offensive player and a gold glove outfielder, so he will not come cheap. Ruiz and Victorino have been some of the teams best post season hitters. You can never have too much pitching so a one year deal fo Durbin and a multiyear deal for Blanton would be the smart way to go.
- Agree. This is Shane's last season with the Phils. Maybe he can link up with Cliff Lee and win World Series' for some other team. Sadly, the Phillies reign as a championship team is all but over. Ruben Amaro does not have the brains to keep it going. The Lee deal was all the evidence we need.
Chooch deserves and should get the biggest bump, and the longest contract. Shane's the sparkplug for the team and he is a gold glover so we need to keep him at least a couple of more years. eicholson
Dom Brown, Anthony Gose, and the new guy we picked up from Toronto are all outfield candidates. But I wouldn't think Victorino would necessarily be gone--Werth may be gone after this year, Ibanez in 2. So that leaves rookies in the OF? Doubtful. DCExpat
Sign them all to 2 to 4 year deals. You guys crack me up. Blanton was the only one pitching well for them during a long stretch and he's young. Shane's still young and he's not going to LF with his speed and arm. Ruiz really showed himself to be a top-flight catcher and Durbin is solid in Mid relief. Dom Brown should be up now to platoon with Rauuuuullllll - I don't care that he bats left - Rauuulllll wore out. i'm more worried about the starting pitching not having Lee - That still hurts. Hopefully Cole steps up and Happ continues doing well. The number 5 spot is worrisome - Pedro might be it or Kendrick - but what about Carpenter (maybe better in middle relief) and Savery?? Maybe Mathieson will surprise. Still looks like Phightins' re the best in the NL and "COULD GO ALL THE WAY!!!" Phillyexp
LMAO @ Durbin. Maybe if he gained some semblance of control he would be due a pay raise. As for now, he deserves nothing. Ruiz and Victorino are the most underpaid of the group. phillyfan412
Liberty, the Phils are still the best in the NL. Who got better. Amaro did a good job getting Halladay. Lee was going to ask for bigger bucks-no way the team is paying over $40 mil for 2 players. Keeping Lee until the end and letting hiom go would get two picks which wouldn't even see double A for a couple of years at least. Amaro got the minor league players to re-stock in case the Phils need to get someone during the season, because they'd only have Brown without them. How come you think Amaro had the brains to build a winner, but not to keep it? mike l
Carlos Ruiz deserves the biggest raise - he is way underpaid for all he has done for the Phillies - he has been the Catcher for back to back a Pennant winning team and makes less than 500,000?? That is Disgraceful. Victorino deserves a big raise as well. phillydude

all 4 need resigned and Phils better work on getting Park back here. jwatson- Liberty One. You are an idiot. How can you say Amaro does no have the ability. To keep Lee and get Halladay was a pipe dream. Go support another team you, if you cannot see what a great team we have here.
ruiz deserves a raise. victorino should give back some money with the way he played in the playoffs. babiesmakinbabies
