First Look: Spring Training Roster/Depth Chart Breakdown
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Updated - 2:50 p.m. (includes Carpenter and Villarreal)
By our count, the Phillies currently have 59 players scheduled to attend spring training, which begins on Feb. 18 when pitchers and catchers hold their first workouts. Last year, 63 players were on the roster when spring training began. The Phillies are still looking to add a veteran lefty reliever on a minor league contract, some depth for the rotation, and perhaps another bullpen arm or two. I could also see them bringing in a veteran right-handed bat on a minor league contract, should one happen to fall into their laps.
But the 2010 Opening Day roster will almost certainly be comprised of 25 of the following names. Over the course of the week, we'll break down some of the subplots to keep your eyes on, particularly in the early days of spring training before the Grapefruit League schedule begins.
For now, though, here is a look at a rough depth chart for the start of spring training. Included is the age the player either has turned or will turn in 2010. I've broken each position down into categories:
LOCK: Player is assured a spot on the Opening Day (or soon thereafter) roster
LIKELY: Player will likely be on the Opening Day (or soon thereafter) roster
CONTENDER: Player will have a serious opportunity to earn a roster spot in spring training.
DOWN THE ROAD: Player won't be on Opening Day roster, but could contribute later in the season thanks to injury.
INVENTORY: Non-prospect likely to begin season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
MAYBE IN '11: Player is still a prospect who likely will spend entire year in minors.
INJURY QUESTION: Player enters spring training with a pre-existing injury that could sideline him for at least the first few weeks of the season.

- Maybe I'm wearing rose-colored glasses, but this seems like the most talent the Phillies have ever assembled in camp. It will be fun to watch the battle for the 5th starter develop. And if the team can get Bastardo or Escalona on track in spring training, the whole 'we need another lefty' debate could be moot. jpk
Is Anthony Gose not invited to camp? brariley
What about Drew carpenter? Captain Splendor- Moyer should retire so we can focus on getting a real 5th starter.
Nice job breakin it down, Murph Dog youpeoplehaveissues

Mustang, I couldn't agree more about Moyer. I appreciate everything he's given us over the last few years and certainly admire the man's career and off the field activities both in terms of charity and community work and coaching. But it's time for him to retire. He was horribly ineffective last year, is now injured all the time, and is drawing a significant salary that detracts from other areas of the team, possibly even preventing the Phillies from having retained Cliff Lee. Moyer needs to gracefully exit, not become baseball's Brett Favre. maximusud
Really enjoyed the read and breakdown. Nice job Murph! Dave34
Yes, what about Drew Carpenter. Are they just sure he won't be on the big club to start the season so why bother bringing him in to fight for innings, or what? Seems like he had a nice year last year at AAA. B in DC
Why is Vogelsong a contender? To me, his numbers look pretty bad. Lifetime 10-22 with a 5.86 ERA and he's 33? I don't get it. aerussel
I'm really worried about the bullpen. Chadds Ford
I was under the impression Aumont would be given a chance to make the big club coming out of the pen? beegal99
Agreed maximusud He would make a really nice coach. would love to see that. Cmon jamie hang up the spikes, and put on your coaches hat. PEFF
Great breakdown. What stands out to me is the Phils are significantly older than I had realized. There definitely is a need to keep the farm system strong. stanbro
Between locks and likely there are 30 names. They can only carry 25. ALJ
I wonder how many people would retire and give up $7/8mm? Not many DCPhillyFan
Not true ALJ, there are only 22 locks and likely's. There are several players repeated at different postions, such as Dobbs, Castro, Gload Francisco, etc.. psujournalist
Kind of disturbing that no young infielders (except Galvis) or catchers are pushing to make even the spring training roster. The catching contingent appears awful at first sight. What are Tuffy's stengths and handicaps? miket47
Would love to see Brown and Aumont get a serious look. psuwelsh
MIKET...the phillies traded away the only young infield talent they had in the Blanton and Lee trades (cardenas and donald...as well as marson behind the plate), and gave up their next closest to the majors catching prospect in the Halladay deal(d'arnaud). Cardenas should be starting at some point in Oakland this year at 3B after moving from 2B, Marson and Donald should both be in Cleveland opening day, and D'Arnaud is 1 1/2 to 2 years away from toronto tkohl
Jamie Moyer won't retire until he picks up his paycheck for this season. Stuie
Nice article Murph! ALJ - There are a few players who appear as locks or likely at different positions(like Dobbs, Gload, Castro, Francisco). PocketAces
And so it came to pass that there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth among the angry Philistines when their Lord of Lee the false prophet was banished from the land. But lo unto them there came the true Messiah who was known as the Holyman from the North. Still there were many naysayers until the prophecy was fulfilled and the Holyman smote the heathen tribe from the wicked city of Gotham and Gomorrah. And then a great peace came upon the land once again and the multitudes were joyous once more. (but not for eternity of course!) stan the man too- ALJ, he only names 24 different players. Some guys, like Dobbs can play multiple positions. Albert
- WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. SO FAR, ONLY MAXIMUSUD WAS PUTZY ENOUGH TO BRING UP CLIFF LEE. GREAT BREAKDOWN, MURPH richsal
- You ungrateful types need to get off Moyers back about retirement. He will get a chance to start, but he is not being given anything. If you know anything about Moyer it should be he is a battler. If he can't earn a spot, he won't pitch. He has earned his shot.
This bench is looking great! As long as we get our pitching, primarily the bullpen in gear, we'll have a solid run again. Go Phils! rochaa3
what is the deal with pedro martinez? here is a guy who we totally disrupted our roster for last year and he is not on the team. because of pedro, we: kicked rodrigo lopez to the curb even though he was 5-1 for us and we caused a morale problem by exiling jamie moyer to the pen, who, btw, led the team in wins for the second consecutive year last year.. why is pedro all of the sudden not welcome here - because he lost a WS game? Rollins got his 2011 option picked up even though he was invisible the entire WS and continues his career on a sharp downward trajectory from his 2007 MVP season.. Yet we dont invite Pedro to spring training even as a CYA move in case the Cliff Lee trade proves to be a significant problem for this rotation?! Which it will! zwarte piet
ALJ count again buddy. there are 24 GetMeToThePlateBoys
I counted 23 locks and 1 likely. You may want to check that again. I hope you realize he's got a couple players at multiple positions. I like the depth this year, and if Hamels bounces back the staff looks good. He's definitely the key. smfree31
@miket47 - yeah, it is disturbing to see no young pitchers or catchers pushing the major leaguers.. btw, seattle has a couple of shortstops and a catcher in the mlb top 100 prospects.. i guess amaro was in such a hurry to get the lee deal done that he overlooked that piece of information. zwarte piet
Some of the locks are bench players listed more then once who can play multiple positions. brob1900
Good job, Murph. As always. I second B in DC's comment..no Carpenter? Phillies_80_08- Whatever happened to Cliff Lee? I thought he pitched pretty well in the playoffs last year. How come he's not listed?
ALJ- That's because Dobbs (3x), Gload (2x), Francisco(2x) and Castro(3x) are in there at multiple positions. If you take out multiple entries, it is only 24 players. NMPartners
Castro and Dobbs show up at 3 positions. Gload shows up at 2. That's the extra 5. wmichael- Hardly Yankees killers! pedge
Just a note on Moyer. He did lead the team in wins last season and wins still count for something. After the All Star break when he was making spot starts and relieving Pedro after rain delays, Moyer had a 3.75 ERA, a .239 average against and a 1.17 WHIP. Last season, 12 different pitchers started games for the Phils. He may be needed for 15-20 starts and in that role, he can be an asset. NMPartners
I think the Starting 8 are the best in baseball. That's right "leave in the 7th inning fans - baseball." The Starting pitching thru 4 looks real good - better than just about everyone else in baseball. I would like to see 2 guys step up. That would be Mathieson (he's got serious Madson type heat) in middle relief and Savery as a 5th starter. To me if Savery's not ready yet then they should convert him to 1st base. He was a heckuva hitter in College. My son's teammate in college played with him in HS and said he was a tremendous hitter. But my point is now's the time for Savery. I think what does bother me a bit is thinking Castro's so great. Maybe he'll surprise. Picking up Schneider was a better move than people realize. Good receiver and a very good stick from when I saw him down here with the Nats. Can't wait for it to get started - who wouldn't when you've got a Championship team. Go Phightins"!!!! Phillyexp
Please Jaime go ...to our coaching staff in the roving minors. Give Aumont a chance for either role. KGKoons

wins as a stat don't have much meaning. santana had 13 wins last year compared to moyers 12 wins. does anyone here really think that you could compare the two based on wins. moyer is was a great story, but at 8mil a year he's blocking someone you should get a shot. sunking11- ALJ - remove the duplicates (i.e., Castro) and I come up with 26.
Anybody who expects Moyer simply to retire and walk away from $6.5MM is deluded. He's nice, but not stupid. And he wasn't "horribly ineffective" last year -- his ERA after the All Star break was 3.48. Of course, he had the season-ending injury, so his prospects for 2010 are pretty dim. But the Phils are stuck with him, barring some kind of a negotiated settlement. paolibulldog- Post is updated. If any of you are Drew Carpenter's mother, I apologize.

Murph, you and Kate Fagan are the best this town has right now. Keep up the good work. The Doctor
While I agree you can see the breadth of talent at the top, I am looking at this another way -- there is really a scarcity of quality depth on the roster this year. If any of our key, say 10-12 go down, it's a huge drop-off (exception being catcher, where they've obviously upgraded back-up). Let's hope they stay healthy! jmk1512
ALJ, some players are locks at multiple positions, like Castro, Dobbs, etc. The math adds up. Reid Must Go
If Joe Savery doesn't have an impact in the bigs sometime in the next year or two, he will have to be considered a huge waste of a draft pick. You don't expect high-level collegiate first rounders to take so long to make it to the show and contribute. B in DC
Moyer is a big part of us winning a world championship and one of the biggest reasons we might come up short of a second one. While I wanted them to resign Moyer for another year, you don't give a pitcher over 45 a multi year deal, period (I would probably lower this to 40-41 for people that don't take care of themselves like Jamie does). If we didn't have to pay Jamie 6.5 mil this year, Toronto wouldn't have had to cough up 6 million to cover the difference in salary between Lee and Halladay and I think RAJ reevaluates whether Seattle needs to be included in the deal. I understand and agree with RAJ's defense of Seattle's inclusion in the trade, that he was restocking the farm system. But these are not significant enough or highly regarded enough prospects to truly achieve that goal in comparison to the opportunity we are giving up. I would love nothing more than to be eating those words as Aumont finishes up a rookie of the year campaign in 2011 while Ramirez takes over for Lidge when his contract is up, but that is a much bigger longshot than another WS with The Rotation (Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Happ, insert absolutely anyone here) More than likely would not have resigned Blanton in this scenario if they wanted to have any kind of shot at resigning Lee (which they would truly have to make a top priority when giving up those prospects) but somehow I don't think anyone would mind as we saw the fruition of the first and only Phillies' dynasty continued over the next three years. Let me pre-empt any "quit whining about Lee" replies with the fact that this is merely a hindsight theoretical debate on a message board and I will support the Phils no matter what and think RAJ is doing a very good job and they have a great chance this year anyway. Go Phils. Twocents
Yea Drew Carpenter and Anthony Gose. Where are those guys on the list? Both of them are better than alot of the guys that are contending for spots in the future. Joe WS
Are we finally done paying for Thome yet? Hollywood Junkie
ALJ, Some players are listed as locks multiple times like Dobbs is listed as 3rd base, 1st base and OF craig kendro
It says Carpenter may be a contender Hollerin187- I saw the Mets rundown. All the locks were the same names on the Injury Question. It was sort of like the Mary Tyler Moore espisode where she got the giggles at Chuckles the Clowns funeral - you shouldn't laugh at someone else's misery but you can't help doing so. I do believe the Phils have been gifted the East. Washington can hit but can't pitch. Florida has some pitching and some hitting but neither enough of either. The Mutts have the SAME staff as last year. Can you say "Ollie, take me to the playoffs. The Braves are like the Marlins..just enough of both to be interesting. It is the Phillies division to lose. Bone

Cant really count can you ALJ? There are 30 slots, not 30 names. p

Yep, every starting position is 30 or older this year. I hate to say it, but injuries may start to be a major factor. Other than some young arms, only D. Brown is a solid contender for '11. Hope there are young 'uns hidden somewhere. AlanInFlorida
Sad looking bullpen and alot of if's in the starting rotation. IF Hamels comes back. IF Blanton can win 15 games. If, If, If. twpman1- Keep in mind Ruben only cares about the team being good. He has admitted he has no interest in winning championships. I've heard that as long as team is "good" the Phillies ownership will still sponsor parades down Broad Street.
This is an old team--more than 50% over 30. Not much mix and not much future northcountry1
Didnt moyer, that old, broken down, ineffective, money stealing lefty, lead the phils in wins????????? soliteryman
Liberty you are an idiot. Stop posting and go back to bed. He says that if he can't win a championship on a $140 million dollar payroll, then he has no business being a GM. Check your facts you poser. ESFjellin
I'd like to see Mayberry make the squad. Has lots of potential. TBR1209
In my opinion, the Phillies need another effective starter and another effective reliever. There are too many ifs in their pitching especially if their hitters go into the tank like they did against Yankee pitching. On another serious note, the Philly sportswriters made no mention about the Muts hiring of Bob Melvin. In my opinion, He is the next Muts Manager. He gets the most out of his players. The D-backs were dumb to fire him. If he gets the job this season the Muts move from pretenders to contenders in the NL East. It just my opinion but why didn't the Philly sportswriter jump on this move? Where is Stan Hoffmann these days anyway? jpelle36
Breakout spring: Besides Brown; I look for big things from Mayberry, JR and Gillies. If Mayberry, JR can correct his long swing and get quicker to the ball, He will be another Howard in the making. If he tucks his shoulder back and front arm in, it should correct the problem. Gillies is moving to a new organization and will be out to make a difference quick. jpelle36
Anyone else notice there will be all of 3 players on the 25 man roster come May (Hamels, Happ, Francisco) who are under 30 years old? I hate to say it, but one of these year's we're bound to lose a season to injuries. PhillyPhan4for4
I'm less excited about the Phil's and still bummed out because Lee is not in the rotation. Wm Penn
Still only 38 on the 40 man roster. Ruben's not done dumpster diving looking for the next Jayson Werth. Dull
24 if you don't include names at multiple positions. Nice job, Murph. I'm headed down to Clearwater in a couple of weeks, can't wait. MVReader
Multiple guys are listed as locks or likely at multiple positions. That's why there are 30 names. dhenry_nc
Aumont going to be working as a started for the Phillies not a reliever. I like Savery or Carpenter as the 5th please not Kendrick again. Bob Crogan
If Moyer would have had the courtesy to retire a few months ago rather than steal $7 million this year, maybe there would have been money for Cliff Lee to stick around. Appreciate all Moyer has done for the Phillies and MLB but it is time to hang them up before he starts collecting Social Security. But this does look like a solid roster... youcantaketheguyoutofphilly...- ALL OF YOU FOLKS WHO THINK MOYER SHOULD RETIRE TO HELP OUR PITCHING STAFF ARE EITHER WORTH 100 MILLION DOLLARS OR TOTAL MORONS. I'M BETTING ON THE LATTER richsal
The team seems old to me. We need to bring some guys into our top 25 who are under, say, 28 years old. Like we used to have. I know we're pushing for NOW but breaking in a few older guys -- hint, pitchers -- seems like a wise move. Or else the 2015-2025 decade might be pretty awful. eman
Hope Fransisco is a better hitter than he was in the postseason. He looked totally overmatched. BG in So.Cal
I meant YOUNGER guys. I would love to see Aumont or another young pitcher upset the apple cart, in a good way. eman
That is an awesome roster. No complaints from me. It`s good to see that only a few people are trying to put a negative spin on this. FaithInMcNabb
I'd like to see the Phillies offer Jamie a position within the organization. They also need to find a fifth starter whose last name begins with HA. Then they could be called Blanton and the 4-H club. But seriously, the club looks strong. I hope Kendrick has a good spring and will be their number 5 guy. Gus L.
Drew Carpenter, otherwise known as Andrew Carpenter? scars73
What exactly do people like about the bench and bullpen? Juan Castro is horrible, Dobbs, was terrible last year, they have no catcher if Ruiz gets hurt, and the bullpen is brutal(Contreras, Lidge, Vogelsong, Durbin, Baez, Villareal?). We better hope Mathieson, Rosenberg, and Bastardo pitch well. scars73- Who said the Phillies are old? They are a very good veteran team with the core guys in the very early 30's. The last time I checked the Yankees won the WS with an older team. How about the old Big Red Machine or the great A’s teams of the 70’s. Moyer will be gone after this season, Ibañez after the 2011 and either Werth or Victorino will be gone soon. My bet is Vic, because we have a few CF prospects. Those three positions will be filled by three young players (Brown and Gose or Gillies and a young pitcher, Aumont, Savery, Carpenter or Mays). And Galvis will replace Jroll after the 2011 season probably. Now, they have to develop a young catcher, (they already have young Sebastian Reyes), and third base and second base prospects. They have plenty of outfield depth, so by trading one or two of those they can fulfill some of their needs. I'm not worried. EL Zorro
ALJ MOJR
actually, there are 26 names between locks and likelies because Dobbs, Castro, Gload and Francisco appear as locks at more than one position. GoPhilsGo
The Phils have one starter over age 35. This is not an old team. It is a veteran team, but that's more of a payroll concern than an injury oncern. They will soon have too many guys in the big contract stage of their careers, which is why you will almost certainly see Ben Francisco patroling right field in 2011 instead of Jayson Werth. GoPhilsGo
Good read! What is the problem they have with Savery? D. Brown is LH not RH. Ray99
It's easy to count Moyer out, but don't. With his stuff and his baseball smarts he makes a great fifth starter; not that I would mind seeing Kendricks make a run at that spot. Either way I think it's a damm good rotation. Bench is looking better too. Now if we could get back to the type of bullpen slotting we enjoyed in '08. Of course that starts with Mr. Lidge. Trifecta- I think Moyer's money coming off the books next year and trading Vic will free enough money to upset Werth big signing. Then the following year, Ibañez is gone also. So, RJA could still be creative enough to keep Werth, our only RH power threat in the whole organization. We could also assume that the payroll will increase a bit year by year. And I now, some guys are also getting raises but... will see. EL Zorro
- Seeing all those 30-plus ages should make it easier to understand why RAJ HAD to made the moves he did--to replenish the farm. Those of you snowed in, looking for some daytime sports : The coverage of the Nascar events this week on speedtv is really good. The 'Dual-Duels' Thurs afternoon are two of the best events all year.
ALJ, Look again. Some players are listed as locks more then once such as Dobbs and Castro. Only 22 Locks and 2 likely's. That makes 24 players. Tiller
Excellent job breaking this down Murph! I am a bit concerned with the pen, but other than that it should be another divisional title. SmartAlec
Some of the names are repeated. Locks =23. Likely = 3 Total 26. StorminNorman- ALJ, you didn't notice that some names are on more than one "lock" list because they can play more than one position. For instance, Dobbs is on the third base, first base and corner outfield lists. Ben Francisco is on the centerfield and corner outfielder lists. Gload is on the first base and corner outfield lists. Castro is on the second base and shortstop lists. Bartleby
- Kendrick as the fifth starter? That movie stunk the first time I saw it. Bretzky
Wow seems to me that the phillies aren't so young anymore.... philarock85
I would like to see Duckworth come up from AAA TO HELP IN THE BP DUCK31
A. Bastardo. The guy is talented . I was hoping Phills would get another lefty for pen so Antonio could get into mix for starters job. It did not happen so Bastardo figures to be in pen. My other choices would be Aumont or Stutes. Don w- I don’t see Dobbs’ role on this team now that we added Gloud and Schneider, two more LH hitters. He’s not an ideal backup third baseman anyway and with too many lefties in the lineup, he could be the odd man out. We need another RH bench player who ideally could play 3rd and 1st, a Fernando Tatis/Kevin Millar type of utility guy. It’s Wes Helms available? Just kidding. Look for Amaro to move our new Midnight Mayor of Philadelphia, nevertheless. EL Zorro
Yeah, I agree on Moyer. He should do the honorable thing and retire. Perhaps, the Phils could buy him out of his contract economically if he went to Seattle where he lives and joined the club as a pitching coach. Or, failing that, use him as a coach in our system. 1republican
Thanks for the update, Murph. I'm fiending for my Phix now that football is finished. andwhysee- nice job, yet another reason to look forward to Spring!
whats the scoop with scott mathieson i thought he had a future before his injury he still throws in the 90s tommy mahon
