First Look: Spring Training Roster/Depth Chart Breakdown
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Updated - 2:50 p.m. (includes Carpenter and Villarreal)
By our count, the Phillies currently have 59 players scheduled to attend spring training, which begins on Feb. 18 when pitchers and catchers hold their first workouts. Last year, 63 players were on the roster when spring training began. The Phillies are still looking to add a veteran lefty reliever on a minor league contract, some depth for the rotation, and perhaps another bullpen arm or two. I could also see them bringing in a veteran right-handed bat on a minor league contract, should one happen to fall into their laps.
But the 2010 Opening Day roster will almost certainly be comprised of 25 of the following names. Over the course of the week, we'll break down some of the subplots to keep your eyes on, particularly in the early days of spring training before the Grapefruit League schedule begins.
For now, though, here is a look at a rough depth chart for the start of spring training. Included is the age the player either has turned or will turn in 2010. I've broken each position down into categories:
LOCK: Player is assured a spot on the Opening Day (or soon thereafter) roster
LIKELY: Player will likely be on the Opening Day (or soon thereafter) roster
CONTENDER: Player will have a serious opportunity to earn a roster spot in spring training.
DOWN THE ROAD: Player won't be on Opening Day roster, but could contribute later in the season thanks to injury.
INVENTORY: Non-prospect likely to begin season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
MAYBE IN '11: Player is still a prospect who likely will spend entire year in minors.
INJURY QUESTION: Player enters spring training with a pre-existing injury that could sideline him for at least the first few weeks of the season.

@miket47 - yeah, it is disturbing to see no young pitchers or catchers pushing the major leaguers.. btw, seattle has a couple of shortstops and a catcher in the mlb top 100 prospects.. i guess amaro was in such a hurry to get the lee deal done that he overlooked that piece of information. zwarte piet
Some of the locks are bench players listed more then once who can play multiple positions. brob1900
Good job, Murph. As always. I second B in DC's comment..no Carpenter? Phillies_80_08- Whatever happened to Cliff Lee? I thought he pitched pretty well in the playoffs last year. How come he's not listed?
ALJ- That's because Dobbs (3x), Gload (2x), Francisco(2x) and Castro(3x) are in there at multiple positions. If you take out multiple entries, it is only 24 players. NMPartners
Castro and Dobbs show up at 3 positions. Gload shows up at 2. That's the extra 5. wmichael- Hardly Yankees killers! pedge
Just a note on Moyer. He did lead the team in wins last season and wins still count for something. After the All Star break when he was making spot starts and relieving Pedro after rain delays, Moyer had a 3.75 ERA, a .239 average against and a 1.17 WHIP. Last season, 12 different pitchers started games for the Phils. He may be needed for 15-20 starts and in that role, he can be an asset. NMPartners
I think the Starting 8 are the best in baseball. That's right "leave in the 7th inning fans - baseball." The Starting pitching thru 4 looks real good - better than just about everyone else in baseball. I would like to see 2 guys step up. That would be Mathieson (he's got serious Madson type heat) in middle relief and Savery as a 5th starter. To me if Savery's not ready yet then they should convert him to 1st base. He was a heckuva hitter in College. My son's teammate in college played with him in HS and said he was a tremendous hitter. But my point is now's the time for Savery. I think what does bother me a bit is thinking Castro's so great. Maybe he'll surprise. Picking up Schneider was a better move than people realize. Good receiver and a very good stick from when I saw him down here with the Nats. Can't wait for it to get started - who wouldn't when you've got a Championship team. Go Phightins"!!!! Phillyexp
Please Jaime go ...to our coaching staff in the roving minors. Give Aumont a chance for either role. KGKoons

wins as a stat don't have much meaning. santana had 13 wins last year compared to moyers 12 wins. does anyone here really think that you could compare the two based on wins. moyer is was a great story, but at 8mil a year he's blocking someone you should get a shot. sunking11- ALJ - remove the duplicates (i.e., Castro) and I come up with 26.
Anybody who expects Moyer simply to retire and walk away from $6.5MM is deluded. He's nice, but not stupid. And he wasn't "horribly ineffective" last year -- his ERA after the All Star break was 3.48. Of course, he had the season-ending injury, so his prospects for 2010 are pretty dim. But the Phils are stuck with him, barring some kind of a negotiated settlement. paolibulldog
