Eaton expects to be traded

POSTED: Friday, February 13, 2009, 1:09 PM
Quick Adam Eaton update. . .

The righthander said he expects to be traded, but said he wouldn't mind starting the season as a Phillie.

"I think odds on favorite I'll probably going somewhere else, but that's a good thing too," Eaton said. "This isn't the only place I fit."

The Phillies would like to move Eaton, but will have to eat most of his $8.5 million salary in order to do it. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. essentially ruled him out as a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation, but earlier this week did not entirely eliminate the possibility of him being on the team at the end of spring training.

Eaton was conspicuosly absent from the Phillies' World Series celebration, though he said that he would have attended the parade, and would have liked to attend the parade, had he been invited by the team.

"Obviously, it hasn't been the best fit here," he said. "I haven't had two good years. For me to establish myself again, it might not be here, it might be somewhere else. It's nobody's fault, it's just the way it is. There are a lot of pitchers vying for the fifth spot, but like I said a couple years ago with myself and Lieber, stuff happens. Hopefully nothing happens and it makes it a very difficult decision for them, but I'll just get ready for a season. If it's a season to be a Phillies, so be it, I'm happy with that, and if it's a season to be somewhere else, that's the way it is."

I don't think the Phils should let Eaton pitch at all during Spring Training if he will definitely be traded. Why should they allow him to prove he can still pitch, just to give him away? At the same time, the pitchers who are vying to be the 5th starter will have fewer chances to be evaluated upon. If they let him pitch, they should be willing to keep him as the 5th starter, if he should shock us all and suddenly become the pitcher he was supposed to be when we got him.

Adam (*expletive*) Eaton. Next to Travis Lee, maybe one of my most hated Phillies. I think they should force him to pitch in the Gulf Coast Instructional League for the rest of his miserable stinking career. What an absolute joke. I wish he'd been allowed to partake in the parade, though, so I could've thrown a rock at his head as his float passed by...

I see Eaton headed back to the Padres. He had a few good years there, Bud Black may be able to help him, and as a good hitting pitcher, he'll stay in the National League.

That $8.5M blew away in the wind two years ago. The fact that Adam Eaton is still with the team amazes me. If you can get someone, really anyone, in exchange for him you got to do it.

Thanks for the update, Dave. I've been curious about Eaton for a while. He's definitely persona non grata in Philadelphia, and he knows it. I wonder what the Phillies can get for him. Maybe a journeyman minor league lifer if they're willing to eat about $7 million? Gillick won us a World Series, so I forgive him all of his sins, but the Eaton signing definitely goes down in team lore as one of the worst ever.

I have the solution: Send Eaton to the Mets!

I would trade him for a Volkswagen filled with excrement.

I know Starboard Tavern is looking for a guy with a truck to bring the beer to the games. I am sure Amaro could work something out. Maybe throw in a tap with him. Is it possible that Eaton could be any worse at say third base as he is at pitching?

If I were the GM of another team and for whatever reason I was willing to take Eaton on my team, I would not trade for him. They know the Phillies have no intention of keeping him, so they will just wait for his release, sign him to the minimum contract - since he will still collect from the Phillies, and not give up anything in return. If I am the Phillies, I don't care about any of that and I just cut him loose.

I would rather have Kyle Abbott in the rotation then Adam Eaton.
