Domonic Brown is back

POSTED: Friday, May 20, 2011, 2:46 PM

A little more than 12 hours after Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Domonic Brown would "probably not" be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the Phillies reversed course and summoned their top prospect to the major league roster, placing Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list and welcoming the top young outfielder in the organization, likely for the rest of the season.

The Phillies did not want to call Brown up until they felt both he and they were ready for an outfield that included him as the everyday right fielder. Victorino's hamstring injury may have hastened the process, but the Phillies did not have any other logical options in the minor leagues.

In addition to Brown, righthander David Herndon was called up from Lehigh Valley to bolster the Phillies bullpen, which tossed six innings last night in a 7-1 loss to the Rockies. He will replace Scott Mathieson, who was optioned after throwing 40 pitches last night.

The Phillies are still expected to place righthander Joe Blanton on the disabled list sometime before his next start. At that point, Vance Worley would likely be recalled to replace Herndon.

Anybody knows today's lineup? Wilson is a lefty and a good one, so it will be tough way to reintroduce Brown.

@s: I think the only reason they sent Mathieson down is because he couldn't pitch multiple innings for the next couple of days after throwing 40 pitches last night, where Herndon could. Not that I expect that to matter with Doc pitching , but you never know. Probably just a stopgap until they activate Worley and Utley next week. Speaking of which, I agree with you when you say that it's unlikely that you'd trim the bullpen to 11 to activate Utley, but since you probably wouldn't get rid of Orr or Valdez, it comes down to Martinez or the last guy in your pen, and for whatever reason they really don't seem to want to give Martinez back to the Nats.

I think Orr becomes the odd man out when Utley returns. Not because it's the right thing but because of Martinez being a Rule 5. I'm not sold on Martinez. I see his value but he's by no means an overwhelming Rule 5 deal. Just like Herndon last year, those guys strap you when it comes to making moves.

I'm most interested in the outfield now. I wasn't really considering the fact that Brown coming up almost surely has to push one of the existing guys out. It seems like Francisco is going to be the loser unless Mayberry really stinks it up before Vic comes back.

Orr has an option left and Martinez is a better all around player anyway and younger and most important can play multiple positions. Valdez stays as well for the same reason. So Orr is the odd man to AAA.

And believe me, Charlie and the Phillies see Martinez as a SS, which I also think is his best position. Ideally he should be at AAA playing SS everyday and then take over next year, if Rollins is not resigned or they could offer Rollins arbitration, and take it from there.

I'm not convinced Martinez will ever have a good enough bat to be anything other than a bench player.

What makes you think Domonic Brown will suddenly figure out how to hit major league pitching? Didn't the Giants prove last season you need veteran bats like Edgar Renteria, Juan Uribe and Cody Ross in order to hit playoff level pitching?

Dom Brown can "learn" while he plays. He cannot misplay balls any worse than "Gentle" Ben, and he cannot hit any less either. At least he has the speed to hopefully recover in the outfield and to get a few "leg" hits.

Tonight's lineup has Mayberry in center, Francisco in right and Ibanez in left. By tomorrow, it should be Brown, Mayberry, and Ibanez. When Shane gets back it should be Mayberry, Brown and Victorino, with the Phils 'carrying' Ibanez the rest of the year, the way they did Geoff Jenkins when they won the whole thing in '08. They played him when they had to, but mostly it was Werth, Burrell and Vicorino.

If they were high on Freddie Galvis they wouldn't take a flier on Martinez. Galviz is a few years away. Some people are even questioning his arm. @S, Martinez is a work in progress. He started playing baseball pretty late in his career. Actually basketball was his first love. But, like I said, I liked what I saw in the Winter. He played in the Dominican AS game and also was the regular SS in both the Dominican National Team that play Venenzuela and Puerto Rico and other teams and was also the regular SS for the Dominican team in the Caribbean WS. I think he has a pretty good chance of being a regular in the Big Show. He could be a late bloomer like Raul.

Bringing Herndon back up with his 9.28 era and sending Mathieson back down with 0.00 era. Pure genius. Finding someone foolish enough to trade for Ibanez, That was the Phillies.

Continuing to play Francisco is like, buying and eating rotten peaches.
