Domonic Brown is back
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
A little more than 12 hours after Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Domonic Brown would "probably not" be called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, the Phillies reversed course and summoned their top prospect to the major league roster, placing Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list and welcoming the top young outfielder in the organization, likely for the rest of the season.
The Phillies did not want to call Brown up until they felt both he and they were ready for an outfield that included him as the everyday right fielder. Victorino's hamstring injury may have hastened the process, but the Phillies did not have any other logical options in the minor leagues.
In addition to Brown, righthander David Herndon was called up from Lehigh Valley to bolster the Phillies bullpen, which tossed six innings last night in a 7-1 loss to the Rockies. He will replace Scott Mathieson, who was optioned after throwing 40 pitches last night.
The Phillies are still expected to place righthander Joe Blanton on the disabled list sometime before his next start. At that point, Vance Worley would likely be recalled to replace Herndon.

- The Phils are high on Freddy Galvis at SS. He's only hitting .243 in Reading but his numbers have been getting better every year since he moved to AA. If he's not ready next year and Jimmy walks they can find a stopgap guy in free agency for a year or two.

Trade Martinez back to the Nats, keep Gload and send Herndon back as soon as Joe's rotation comes up when Worley will pitch . Herndon will probably give up ....who knows how many runs as the team continues to suffer their hitlessness. Koons
I didn't know a team in first place was desparate. Martinez is not insurance for Jroll Valdez is and they you have Orr for second. Phillyphan26
If J Rollllllll went down, Josh Barfield is hitting far better than Mart. so he could take his place. And Orr is the odd man out. Koons
I like it but sure hope Domonic is ready to play MLB-caliber defense. Think he'll hit if he can stay healthy. Phils really need him to be the Heyward/Stanton-level prospect that got hyped last year. PhillySubsMac
I don't think you "ruin" young pitchers by using them in the bull pen. Lots of starters began there then stretched out to become starters. Its a good way to gain experience without being overwhelmed JamesSeitz
Martinez has a chance to be a regular while Orr and Valdez will never be, IMO. That was my point. EL Zorro
I just want to know when Baez goes away. Mr. Underhill
I actually like Kendrick as a bullpen guy. I cannot believe the curse of Herndon is back!!!! Mr. Underhill
RAJ and Chuck are first-class liars. krammar
Brown and Mayberry need to play every day until the trade deadline. As you approach the deadline, you make an assessment based on how these guys are doing: do you keep them and take them to the play offs, or do you make a trade to replace one or both of them in the outfield. If they are not cutting it, then a hard decision needs to be made on how to get some more talent out there. Are you are going to trade 1 of the Aces or trade Worely along with some other prospects, to get a bat in the outfield. You wont get something for nothing, and the Phillies likely won't take on much more salary.
Ibanez and Fransico should just be released. They have little or no trade value and I can't see Brown and Mayberry being any worse that what these 2 offer. If they can bat .250 and steal a few bases, it will be an upgrade. Anything better than that will just be gravy!!! edfiero- You need outfielders off the bench. Problem is most teams carry 5 outfielders at most and we will have 6 possibilities: Ibanez, Vic, Mayberry, Brown, Gload, Francisco. I would not get rid of Gload. He's a good pinch hitter off the bench. Mayberry would also be tough to part with and I think he can also play first. Vic and Brown would be locks. They aren't going to just dump Ibanez in my opinion. That leaves Francisco but he was also very good off the bench before and I don't know that you just give up on him. Tough call for this year. Next year Ibanez is gone, making it easier. The ones you'd want to trade -- Ibanez or Francisco -- are probably untradeable. s
Why are we arguing over Orr, Martinez, Valdez, Young, Herndon, Mathieson, etc? They ALL stink! dasher
Dom certainly beats having Martinez in the outfield; as long as UC plays him regularly along with Big John... Not sure why Vance is sitting with the 'Pigs - he could be on Phils bench waiting his turn and at the same time watching and picking up tips from the Big 4... M60tanker
