Myers' rehab start washed out

POSTED: Sunday, August 23, 2009, 10:47 AM

UPDATED: Brett Myers' rehab start at Lakewood was rained out today.

Myers is now scheduled to pitch the first game of a doubleheader Monday against Kane County (5:05 p.m. start).

He remains expected to throw one inning.

He declined to talk to reporters today.

Third baseman Greg Dobbs has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained calf that he suffered while running the bases in the Phillies' 4-2 loss to the Mets Friday night.

Miguel Cairo, the veteran infielder who started the season on the Phillies' active roster, has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

To make room for Cairo on the 40-man roster, lefthander Antonio Bastardo has been moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The Pedro situation seems pretty easy to figure out. A year off, then a couple of OK starts, and today 3 mediocre innings followed by 3 pretty good innings. I think the future Hall of Famer gets another start to see where he is headed.

Phillymike, umps didn't use replay nor did they rely on the crowd. Poor call by the second base ump. It may not look good, but if he asks for help from another ump, he should get it. What if the shoe had been on the other foot and it was Werth making the catch and the ump calling it wrong? Wouldn't you be happy they corrected it?

Pedro has a 5.14 ERA, Moyer 5.22. The Phils are 3-0 in his starts because they scored a bunch of runs. You know who else had a ton of run support & a high ERA. Kyle Kendrick. The Pedro who earned the fifth highest winning percentage did that by dominating games with a career 2.92 ERA. Don't kid yourself and think the 2000 Pedro is only a couple of starts away, he's passed his Cy Young form. If he can improve his consistency, great. If not, he's probably getting in shape for the playoff bullpen.

Pedro's ERA is 5.14. Moyer's, before he was replaced, was 5.47. (And if you want to compare their first 3 starts, Pedro's ERA is 5.14, Moyer's was 6.35 and he hadn't missed a year.) More to the point, the previous poster was ready to give up and release Martinez based on his performance thus far. But yes, Pedro could be an asset in the playoff bullpen -- no way he starts -- IF given the chance to sharpen. Nowhere did I mention or imply he will be the 2000 Pedro; indeed, I suggested he could get worse. The point was that the guy, as rusty as he is, has already shown an ability to work out of some jams -- and that's the stuff that wins are made of. You won't find his 2.92 ERA close to the top 100 all-time, but his winning percentage is 5th, in part, because an ability to rise to the occasion. Let's see if he's got enough of that left to help.

Leave Pedro alone..I'd take his 92 mile an hour fastball and location over Moyer's 80 mile and hour fastball and 75 mile and hour change-up any day of the week. And as for Dobbs...it just wasn't one year he was great...it was 2...'07 and '08.

Philalogic: Your llack of logic amazes. Moyer leads the team in wins. If you are going to say, "but the guy is 2-0... and that's no accident" Then you should be screaming for Moyer to replace Hamels (who has fewest wins of all the starters). At this point, I think Moyer and Pedro are equal. The balance is tipped to starting Moyers, IMO because Pedro may be useful out of the Pen, Moyers isn't.

"He declined to talk to reporters today." Gee I wonder why? Do I notice a trend here?

Its still too early to start saying Padro is a wash or what ever. He has a start against the Braves at home which gives him a favorable atmosphere to pitch. What happens in that game should tell us more about where he should be, starter or pen. If he gets hit around reguardless of the score I would be worried about his effectiveness down the stretch. There is also reason to worry about Hamels who for what ever reason continues to look like Kendrick a year ago. I'm sure some won't like to hear that but I call them as I see them. If the Phils don't turn Blanton, Lee, and Happ loose they are crazy. Let them pitch while they are rolling and save the Pen for Hamels and Pedro's starts.

Hey, fan in Jerusalem... Read more carefully... The fact that Pedro is 2-0 was offered as evidence that he shouldn't be released from the team just yet, and as an indication that he can step it up in tight spots during a game and thus might prove useful this post-season if he's allowed to shake off his rust via more starts -- and additional direct evidence was offered to support only that assertion. Pedro's record was not offered as evidence that he should be in the rotation instead of Moyer. That was a separate point, where ERA was the ONLY evidence I offered. You conflated the two separate arguments into one in an attempt to refute my point, but conflation is a logical fallacy... Both pitchers have enjoyed strong run support and that's a separate factor in their picking up wins. But if you want to talk only about Pedro vs. Jamie in the rotation, I'll stick with Pedro now for another reason: Almost all of Moyer's success this year has come in 7 games vs. three extremely inexperienced lineups (AZ, FLA, TB) that have a grand total of two five-or-more-year veterans (Burrell, Pena on TB). In his other 16 games, Moyer's ERA is 6.96.
