Dobbs now a free agent

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2010, 3:06 PM

Quick update here:

The Phillies have made a few moves involving their 40-man roster.

The headliner is probably Greg Dobbs becoming a free agent. The Phillies had the option of offering him arbitration, but instead removed him from the 40-man roster, at which point the veteran infielder elected to become a free agent.

Jamie Moyer also elected free agency, although that was more of a procedural move, with the Phillies clearing his spot on the 40-man roster. Moyer's contract expired at the end of the season. Five days after the World Series, he will be free to sign with any team.

The Phillies also outrighted catcher Paul Hoover to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Hoover then elected free agency.

They now have 38 players on the 40-man roster.

Stan the Man...Hope your enjoy the Series without your team in it. With how good everyone says your team WAS suppose to be Oh well they showed you cry baby fans they weren't. Now you have a team of players getting older the your chance of the playoffs with the National League the way it is, will be a lot harder. Keep on Crying!

Just goes to show you who the better team is and why they beat your losers. Who would ever want to play for losers! Go play for a good team! This isen't a team who goes to the World Series and wins. They go to the playoffs and make you and all the fans cry!

Not that it will happen, but what about moving Howard? Two post-seasons in a row when he was a non-factor...K after K, no clutch hitting, no impact. They all sucked to some degree this past post-season, but Howard is supposed to be The Guy. Is he the Phillies' Dominic McNabbb? Think of the options with that kind of money freed up. ONe more thing--get rid of Baez and Durbin! I'm beggin you Ruben!

Werth, was as good as gone. The day he signed with Boras. You have to let players go or trade them. To keep the long term sucess going. Look at the contracts and when they expire. Their replacement are in the farm system. The moves show the Phils wanna win it all. Not the smoke and mirror trick the Eagles did for 10 yrs.

Come on guys..most of you are still hung over from out ousting by the Giants. Reality folks..reality. Rollins is and will always be a better option than Valdez. Valdez gets kudos for an outstanding 2010, but come on...why is his career what it is? As for Dobbs, injury and lack of AB's lead to low BA's. Moyer gets credit for holding the fort until he got hurt. Two complete games wasn't too bad. Hope he heals and gets to pitch in 2011. Let all the injuries heal properly (Howard's ankle, Rollin's legs, Utley's thumb, Polanco's elbow, Victorino's abdominals, Ibanez' two offseason surgeries, etc... This team accomplished alot w/o consistant health. Look out for 2011. As for Werth, reality check. Boris is his agent..he wants years/dollars. The Phillies will not out bid against themselves. If Werth want to play in Philly, he can. If he wants the years/dollars to max out, he'll play in Anaheim/Boston. Thanks for a great 4 year ride Phighten's. Year 5 is but 3 1/2 months away.

Best of luck and happiness to both Jaime and Greg where ever they land. It would have been nice to see Jamie join the Phillies organization as a coach, he really inspires the other players. The 2008 WS Champions, they breaking up that old gang of ours.

Rollins is shot-- his body type-- short muscle profile and weight gain portend increasing probability of sprains and pulls.......there is minimal loss playing Valdez. The other question mark in my mind is Victorino-- like Rollins a poor leadoff hitter who does not understand his role or is unable to execute it. I would move both and move immediately to resigning your only RH power - Jason - is a MUST.

Dear MRD:Two points to consider: 1)These players didn't choose to leave...the team CUT them from the roster. 2)Those "losers" lead the majors over the last three years in most wins in both the regular season and postseason!!! I am wondering where you managed to develop such advanced skills of logic and analysis.

does everyone notice how happy people are to get rid of payroll bec of expiring contracts? if the phils sign werth to anything more than 4 yrs i can picture ppl getting upset about the length of his contract if injuries and decline in production happen.

Werth is as good as gone and Ibanez is going nowhere unless the Phils are willing to eat $9 million of his salary which isn't happening either. They should sign Manny to a one year deal and platoon him with Ibanez in left. As much as I cringe at the thought of Manny in the club house, he would certainly provide a ton of protection to Ryan Howard. Additionally, Charlie was Manny's first manager and if anyone can keep him in line, its Uncle Charlie. This team sore needs a productive right handed bat.

Rollins has gone downhill every year since his MVP year. He's also having trouble staying healthy. It doesn't get any better as the player gets older. I think his trade value is already pretty low. Besides, who do they have to replace him? Wilson Valdez is a good utility man, but he's not an everyday shortstop. I think they'll let Rollins play out his contract and then let him walk. They really need to start grooming a replacement.

They don't need to trade anyone to keep Werth. If you take the salary they just trimmed by canning Moyer, Dobbs, and Romero they could give Werth a fat raise.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 8:55 AM, 10/29/2010
Paul, I believe they already have 145 millions committed to 16 players, so they have to trade not only one but maybe two players to accommodate Werth, unless the organizations raises the payroll significantly or somebody takes Howard or that other player is Utley or one of the Roys. I don't think that's going to happen.

I wonder how many times this offseason I will have to read, 'Eat Ibanez' contract and then sign Werth.' - - - - If the Phillies elect to eat the remaining year on his deal (which they won't), it does not mean they don't have to pay him - - - - Hello!

The real question is how to get rid of Ryan Howard. He has not been the same hitter since the Yankees shut him down in last year's WS. Next year he will be lucky to see 25 HRs and 90 RBIs. Because of his long term high salary conract I don't think the Phils can unload him anywhere

Starting pitching does not appear to be a core need right now. A right fielder, long relief, and a better hitting bench are what the Phils need to find. Phils are not likely willing/able to resign Werth (who will get $15M a year for several years). Teams are not likely to take Howard or Ibanez in trades because of their contracts. We can't trade Ruiz as we don't have a suitable replacement. Since Victorino is the youngest and fastest between him, Rollins, and Utley, I would not be in a rush to trade Victorino. Additionally, if Werth goes, we have no replacement for Victorino. So either we hope for the best with Brown (or some other call-up or pick up) in a platoon or trade Rollins or Utley. I would tend to go with Brown and look for Rollins and Utley to have a better, less injured year. And keep some money for a plan B if the offense struggles again next year...

Many thanks to the Grand (Old!) Master for his contributions on the mound! It was a very nice stay on our team, and I really hope someone will let you continue your career in the Majors. The memories are many, varied, and sometimes intense! The two games you came into last year after the rain had washed away the start by your "replacement" stands tall and proud. The wins you generated when you first got here were remarkable in themselves......but especially in light of the fact that Gillick had "lightened the load" by trading away Abreau et al. Every year people kept expecting you to retire....with blood on your hands no less. I'm sure that you'll be getting a ML contract when you show you are ready. And Mr. Dobbs! Without you in '08, who knows WHERE we woulda been? Thank you for what you did for us!

THAT ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE JUMPING SHIP B/C THEY LOST THE NLCS...i consider most of you non-phillie fans...just here for a championship and dont understand baseball. its the toughest thing to win the world series and the phillies were almost there 3 times in a row, weird how its only happen 1 other time in the NL in the history of baseball. why dont you guys look at the big picture and appreciate what this team has brought to this city...was it disappointing that they lost, YES!!! but move on...we have Halladay for 2 more years...Oswalt for another with an option...Hamels for another...most of this core for a few years...THEY WILL BE BACK AND WILL BE THE FAVORITES NEXT YEAR IN THE NL AGAIN AND THEY WILL WIN.

I disagree. Every year, after the season, you look at what the player has contributed, and if there is a potential upside.

After they won the world series, I said "They should act like they lost and ignore the emotion of the moment".

The team needs to get a lot younger. Jimmy Rollins has pretty conclusively shown that his best days are behind him. Unless he wants to do a lot more conditioning offseason that he's shown, I don't see much upside there.

As bad as werth looks sometimes at the plate, his defense is great and teams don't like pitching to him.

Howard was a mess this year. Whatever he's doing, he needs to stop. Not a single home run in the playoffs. He's the biggest disappointment simply because I expect him to look at tape of himself striking out all those times and think "gee, I need to change something". Even ESPN showed before the Giants series how to strike him out. Either he improves or he'll be ineffective and go through an ugly process where the phils can't cut him and just have fans boo him all the time.

Nobody is jumping ship. These guys make millions are subject to the same scrutiny that any of us are at our jobs.

Trading Victorino is ridiculous !!! Covers the most ground in center since Maddox. With anyone else see how many go through the hole Ibanez
creates in left. He kept Werth going to the line to make those catches
again because his speed covers so much.

beagelmommy's is an idiot just like the rest of you who want to trade the core of this team...if the phils dont sign werth its b/c they dont want to fork over a little more money of what they made off us fans this year. we dont need to trade any of the core players...injuries play a role and to over look that you are guys are irrogant. Valdez at SS? a journey man who has a strong arm, but lead the team in grounding into DP's and he didn't even start hahahahahahaha...Rollins is the spark to this team, and he's a leader on this team (dont have too many of those, at least the outgoing one's)...Victorino is a GOLDEN GLOVE outfielder...Chase has shown more hustle then any player on this team each year. Howard has hit more HR's and RBI's over the last 5 years then Pujols...if you can't sign Werth move on, just like moving on from LEE that many of you idiots cant do. H2O pitched great, and we win that series with our normal run output...people were praising Gross as the hitting coach when he was here a week, but what are thye saying now? Charlie who i love put the team in many of those positions as well, he has some horrible situational calls...Chooch who is usually clutch for us had the lowest batting average of the team and his lowest in any postseason series. there is only 1 trade i would think about if it worked out the way we needed it too and i still prob wouldn't do it b/c this team is goin to come back and win next year. but if i made a trade it would be Utley just b/c of who we have on this team and what is out there for FA's...they have a great righty bat out there who hits better in small parks with HR totals...ADRIAN BELTRE, if we signed him...you move Poly to second and you trade Utley for a young OF and RP...then you have the righty bat behind Howard again...but like i said i still wouldn't do it. I LOVE THE FACT

Raul would be difficult to trade, but he really has to go. He has consistently played poorly in September and October. Werth will never be re-signed; the money he will be offered is simply too much. Trading Victorino would make no sense unless the return were staggering. The Phils really need a solid right-handed hitting OF to platoon with Dom Brown in RF. When Dom takes off, then that OF could platoon with Raul, with the eventual goal of replacing him. Ben Francisco is OK, but the Phils could do better.

Trade Rollins and Ibanez to the west coast, and get what you can preferably someone who can hit. Get rid of Herndon, Durbin, & Baez then pick up a lefthanded setup man. Werth goes to leftfield and Francisco/Brown platoon in right. Gload is bench for OF and 1st. Valdez at short and Bocock is bench for 3rd, ss, & 2nd. Don't know if Sweeney will stay but he was a great help when Howard was sidelined. Shop for decent pinch hitters for the bench and think about a lefty closer preferably not Zagursky. SEE IF TERRY PENDELTON WOULD LIKE A NEW HOME IN PHILLY. That may be the best thing that could happen to Howard and the rest. Bring up Mayberry for the bench.

Werth is going to get a monster contract from someone. Phil's would be foolish to match. Let him go people. In two years he will be Aaron Rowand. I loved the guy when he was here, but I'm glad he's not sitting on my bench with that monster contract.

I definitely don't believe J-Roll is done. He is the unquestioned leader of this team. Look at Cal Ripken and Jeter. Ripken had a down year in 1990 batting .250 came back the next year and won the AL MVP. And he was the same age as Jimmy is now. Jeter also had a down year in 2008 but bounced back strong last year. He isn't finished, he was plagued with injuries. You need to keep Valdez as a utility guy behind Utley, Jimmy and Placido. Trade Vic to keep Werth. There is no way anyone will take Rauulll. If not, watch out for Werth and Lee in Queens next year!

Dominic Brown isn't near ready for a full time starting spot. They should have him platoon with Francisco (a much needed right handed bat) and then if he proves himself make him the starter in the OF. This is what we did with Jenkins and Werth...Jayson rose to the occasion and earned his spot!

I don't disagree with Rollin's production and I don't mind seeing a different face at SS. HOWEVER, Rollins is the spark on this team, he is the catalyst. Granted it didn't do much this year, but if JRoll is gone, who is going to keep the team relaxed and lighhearted? As good as Utleyis, I would hate to play on a team with 10 Utleys. Other than that, I don't mind Jroll gone.

Dobbs simply didn't get at-bats and that's why his production went downhill. In 2008, he played 3B while Feliz was injured, and then he played some LF when Burrell was injured. If you don't get steady at bats, you don't have any production. Simple as that.

Both theories hold some merit. Look at Matt Stairs in '08 when he came to the Phils. He was DH'ing for the Jays all season, so he was very fresh when he was asked to PH. In '09 he barely saw the time of day and he was terrible in his at bats.

When half the team was hurt this year, he had guys all over the place contribute and when everyone came back, you could count on guys like Franscico, Sweeney, Gload to get a nice hit. Needless to say, they all saw a huge decrease in playing time( a big reason was that the Phils were games behind, so Charlie wanted to use the big boys..understandable) and when the playoffs came, they looked lost.

One starter worth looking into is Zach Greinke of KC. Then they need a reliever. A trade= Rollins to the American League for a starter and reliever. A 4th or 5th guy and a middle road lefty reliever could be a ticket they need. A kid SS from the minors too. Time to get younger.

Rollins would not get you Greinke - KC does not want older players on the downside of their careers. To think that the Phils could also pull in a minor league OF and solid reliever in that deal would be dreaming.

I wonder whatever happened to Dobbs? His first couple of years with the Phils, he was an outstanding pinch hitter and role player. Then he completely lost it. He became an error and K machine over night. Nevertheless, I will always remember him being a part of the 2008 world chanmpions.

When Matt Stairs got here and Dobbs saw his style of swinging VERY hard at every pitch, Dobbs started doing the same. He saw Stairs become a folk hero with his homer against the Dodgers in the '09 LCS and figured he could do this too. There aren't too many guys who can get away with Stairs' approach and even Stairs himself would have been a much better hitter--and WAS a much better hitter when he cut down that swing. He would have had a much more productive career. Maybe both of them should have been happy playing slow pitch softball.

PHs are usually flashes in the pan. Very, very few in baseball history have maintained a level of excellence, especially of the caliber Dobbs was initially. Typically springboards into an every day position, but when that doesn't happen, you see a Dobbs-ish falloff.
