Did people really boo Myers for walking Griffey?
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
My opinion on the situation is this:
The boo has gotten to be a visceral reaction amongst Philly fans. It isn't simply a sound of derision any more. More and more, it is being used as a general reaction to express displeasure.
When a child's mother tells you she is cooking brussle sprouts, the child might boo. But he isn't booing his mother. He is expressing his displeasure for the situation.
I say all of this because more than a smattering of fans emitted boos when Brett Myers walked Ken Griffey Jr. in the eighth inning. It caught my attention. And it caught Myers.
Here is what he said after the game:
“It kind of irritated me a little bit,” said Myers, who had allowed just one hit up to that point. “I just don’t understand. I know they want to see a home run hit, but not in a tight game like that, especially (Tuesday) and (last night). They should be pulling for us. Yeah, he’s going to make history and hit a home run, but if he does it here or he doesn’t, he’s going to do it at some point. You’re supposed to be here patting us on the back. Believe me, I tried to go after him. I wasn’t pitching around him. I’m not scared of any hitter."
Regardless,
Not a bad game by Myers at all.
Very good in terms of the Phillies long term prospects. If he can pitch like he has the last two nights, this team should be in decent shape.
Totally agree with you, DM. I was at the game tonight and I immediately turned to my cousin and said, "We're down 1-0 in the 8th inning, do these people really want to see Griffey homer now?" I get that it's history and all, but let him go make history somewhere else. This is a first place team and every loss in this division is going to be magnified, especially with the Mets playing better ball of late. I like Griffey because he's always played the game the right way and never cheated unlike the current HR king, but I want my team to win first and foremost. Eddie D
I think Myers should have thrown at the bum. High Cheese 'eh Murph? rockinrob

I think the boo is something people think they almost have to do now...it like Tony Soprano using the F-bomb versus Mother Teresa: the common reaction, and maybe with a lesser impact than if others used it. Philly Fan in Kuwait
I agree that the booing is out of hand--that said I suspect their ire is more that they were irritated that he didn't play all week perhaps for "general soreness' which seems to say we are holding him out so he can hit his 600th at home--and I don't even know if they are home next--how many of the sold out fans came expressly too see Jr? kokomo
The person we should be booing is Ryan Howard. Bases loaded and he strikes out, Utley on 1st with one out and he strikes out. Glad he got that clutch single earlier in the game. Matt

Myers deserves every boo he gets. Padilla. Leron
The booing is out of control. Its starting to make the Philly fans seem dumb - and we are smart fans. No way you can boo a guy who just threw 7 innings of no hit ball. And in a 1 run game, I don't care about Griffey hitting a home run. I don't care if he retires today and never hits another home run, I want to see the Phillies win. Go hit your 600th in Fla. People should be booing the Reds for not putting him out there to play every day so it doesn't come down to one PH at bat. Man up - get out there and play! Gary Varsho
I was at the game last night and heard the boos as well. But, I think many of you may be missing what some of us at the park felt--the ump behind home was pinching Myers most of the game which led to his many walks and frustration. (We all know how well Brett does when frustrated by calls) I felt that most of the boos were directed to the UMPIRE, not Myers. I would love to see Griffey make history--but not against the Phillies, not in that situation and not when we were down 1-0 at that time. alaver
alaver - I would agree with you, but if it was really about "pinching Myers", they should have booed more often. Those boos were directly related to the walk of Griffey - same as the night before. Gary Varsho
I go to meaningless middle of the season games to be entertained. When Bonds hit that moonshot a few years back, it totally made my night. It would've been great if Griffey hit 600 last night. Padilla. Leron
Ryan Howard is dumb Matt
Howard has a chicken wing for an arm. With Big Papi breaking down Ryan would fit nicely as a DH at Fenway. I would showcase Howard as the DH in the upcoming A's, Ranger series and put Utley at first and call up Adrian Cardenas, the Phils second baseman of the future for the six game series. Dull
Exactly, at least he could but the ball is play in clutch situations. And he probably wouldn't cry if he strikes out. Matt
