DeFratus, Aumont, Savery get promotions

POSTED: Thursday, June 16, 2011, 2:04 PM

The Phillies have promoted four players from Reading to Triple A Lehigh Valley and moved former first-round pick Joe Savery from Clearwater to Reading.

Cody Overbeck, who is currently leading the Eastern League in home runs (18) and RBIs (46), reliever Justin De Fratus, righthander Philippe Aumont, and lefthander Ryan Edell are moving to the IronPigs.

Savery, who was hitting .307 with two homers and 26 RBI for Clearwater, won 12 games for the R-Phils as a starting pitcher in 2009 and was named an Eastern League All-Star. Reading will also receive relievers Justin Friend, and Chance Chapman. Friend, a 2011 Florida State League All-Star, was on Clearwater’s roster, while Chapman was with Lehigh Valley.

Friend was 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 26 games for Clearwater  and was second in the Florida State League with 19 saves. Chapman, who began the year in Reading, was 2-2 with a 5.29 ERA with Lehigh Valley. Chapman was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three games with Reading earlier in the season.

De Fratus, 23, has appeared in 23 games out of the bullpen for Reading and has posted an impressive 4-0 mark with a 2.10 ERA. A member of the Phillies 40-man roster, De Fratus had a team-high eight saves and is ranked as the 15th best prospect in the Phillies organization by Baseball America.

Aumont, 22, has not allowed an earned run over his last seven appearances for the R-Phils and has gone 1-5 with a 2.32 ERA in 25 games. Aumont was originally acquired by Philadelphia from the Seattle Mariners along with outfielder Tyson Gillies and pitcher J.C. Ramirez for pitcher Cliff Lee on December 16, 2009, and is ranked as the 14th best prospect in the Phillies organization by Baseball America.

Edell, 27, posted a 5-1 mark with a 3.50 ERA over 12 starts with Reading this season. A native of Boston, MA, Edell has won two of his last three starts, and has posted a 1-0 mark with a 1.32 ERA in two June starts.

It's always good to hear that Aumont is doing well. De Fratus is a studly bullpen arm. Should make the team outright next spring. Maybe he can help in September this year as well.

I think the bullpen will be set for years to come. Sign Mad Dog a closer deal and you have bastardo and stutes. Fill in with minor leagues and herndon and you're pretty much set. So long Lidge, Contreras, Baez, and Romero...

Absolutely spot on. Perhaps Contr stays if if if he gets his mechanics straight. The rest plus Blanton and Raul will be gone, via trades , release or end of contracts. Rube usually lies about trades, so let us see who gets who then.

Love the progress of the young stud relievers in the minors....the success of Stutes and Bastardo should teach the Phils management that the bullpen is a spot for young arms, not weak, tired vets (like Romero)!

Madson will bolt via free agency. Scott Boras will not settle for a hometown discount for Madson, and Amaro will not pay him $10M+ a year. Better off using that money to lock up Hamels anyway. I like the idea of going with De Fratus or Aumont as closer next year. The Kimbrel/Venters combo in Atlanta proves that a young successful bullpen is quite possible. Stutes and Bastardo this year further exemplify that premise.

I'm not so sure. Madson is doing the job the Phils envisioned all along, and Lidge is probably out of chances in Philly, and certainly not going to get closers money. Madson isn't going to get 10m anyway, dunno where u got that number from..

It's good to learn of Overbeck's promotion. They will need him when Polonco's contract finishes after 2012. How is SS and LF coming along?

I don't understand how the Spankees could simply pluck Brian Gordon off the Lehigh roster and give the Phils nothing in return. Wasn't he Phils property? He started today vs Texas and went 5, giving up 2 runs. Can someone explain this?

I hope Madson stays but if he doesn't, I'd definitely go with Bastardo next season and Contreras as a back-up. Bastardo has been spot-on outstanding this year and will have had a few years of ML experience. Stutes can set up. We add another experienced arm or two, say goodbybe to Baez, and move these younger guys in more slowly.

Gordon had a clause in his contract stating that he could sign with any major league team if the Phils hadn't brought him up to the bigs by June 1.

Has anybody seen Overbeck play? I'm wondering why he was moved from 3B over the last few years was he such a butcher he could never play the position at the MLB level?? Seems to me we have enough first basemen at this point.

Edell is a soft tossing lefty starter with a fastball in the mid 80's. Aumont can't field his position resulting in a lot of self induced unearned runs. He had given up 16 runs but only 8 were earned. Overbeck has hit 14 of his 18 home runs this year at the friendly confines in Reading where the fences are near and the wind was always blowing out when I was there. I agree DeFratus is the one to watch. He has the stuff to be ready right now for the Pen at CBP.

DeFratus certainly has the tools---just wish he would hide the ball a bit more prior to his release.

It will be interesting to see how Savery's promotion affects Rizzotti. At Clearwater, Savory has been a DH, 1B and played a little LF. Rizzotti is a DH and 1B. They both hit left handed so no platoon is obvious. I guess if Savery can make the adjustment to AA, Rizzotti and he will alternate between 1B and DH. I have no idea how good Savery is defensively. Has anyone seen him play 1B or LF for Clearwater?

blaqjaq - It's common at the AAA level that former MLB players might sign a contract that gives the player the option to leave on a certain date. In this case, Gordon needed to be on the Phils 25 man roster by a certain date. He wasn't and when the Yankees were interested in brining him to their 25 man roster, Gordon contractually asked for and was given his release by the Phillies so that he could sign with the Yankees. I think Kris Benson had a similar deal with the Phils a couple of years ago, Oliver Perez may have a similar deal with the Nationals and Scott Kazmir may be forced to sign this type of deal if he wants to continued playing pro ball.

Blaq; Gordon was NOT on Phillies roster. He was a minor league free agent who signed a AAA contract allowing him to obtain his release if he had an offer to be put on a major league roster. Yanks contacted his agent with the offer and he exercised the release clause.

....asked whether he was worried the Phils would be upset at his maneuvering, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman answered: "Hey, they got Cliff Lee, I got Brian Gordon."

I could have sworn I just read an article like 3 days ago where it sure seemed to me that Ruben was kind of getting used to the fact that madsen might bolt in free agency and that they would be going with a young guy like Bastardo, at to begin with and also keeping De fratus in the picture as the next closer in waiting. I thought signing Madsen was a sure thing but maybe not anymore.

Gordon pitched well in his first start as the Yankee's won....that doesn't sit well...DeFratus is next to come up

I'm not sure Gordon pitched well for the Yankees today. He went 5.1 inning and allowed 10 base runners. Only 2 runs, but if you allow that many base runners you will eventually get burnt.

Actually Gordon gave up 12 base runners in 5.1 innings. He also hit two batters. A total of 2.1 base runners per innings pitched is not really that impressive...and since he is a starter, where would we have put him anyway?

i don't know why everyone is convinced Madson is gone. We don't know what his salary demands are yet and his current deal (also a Boras deal was reasonable)

Am interested to see how Overbeck progresses. If he can play a good 3rd base, he could force Polanco out after next year.. Gotta love that power he's been showing so far this year.

On the Madsen note, if his wife is as involved in the decision as Cliff Lee's wife was, I think he leaves Philly over the incident with fans earlier in the season. Can never discount the "family decision".
