Daulton named to Wall of Fame

Darren Daulton, a three-time NL All-Star and the leader of the 1993 Phillies, will be inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame on Friday, Aug. 6, prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the New York Mets, the Phillies announced.

Daulton, a 35th-round draft choice by the Phillies, played 14 seasons (1983; 1985-97) with the Phillies, one of only nine to wear the team’s uniform that long. In 1,109 games for the Phillies, Daulton compiled a .245 average with 134 homers and 567 RBI.

Daulton’s All-Star selections came in 1992, 1993 (starter) and 1995. He and Bob Boone share the most All-Star selections for a Phillies catcher.

In 1992, he became only the fourth catcher in major league history to lead the league in RBI (109). The following season, he drove in 105 runs for the 1993 National League champion Phillies. He’s the only catcher in Phillies history with two 100-RBI seasons.

He was traded to the Florida Marlins in 1997 and retired after helping the Marlins win the World Series.

“Darren was more than just an outstanding catcher and middle of the order hitter,” Phillies president David Montgomery said ina statement. “He was our leader, both on the field and in the clubhouse. His leadership played a huge role in the success of our 1993 team. His recognition as the 2010 Phillies Wall of Fame inductee is richly deserved.”

A 14”x20” cast bronze plaque of Daulton will be added to the Wall of Fame display located in the Memory Lane

Returning for the ceremonies are Wall of Famers Senator Jim Bunning (1984), Steve Carlton (1989), Mike Schmidt (1990), Dick Allen (1994), Greg Luzinski (1998), Garry Maddox (2001), Tony Taylor (2002), Bob Boone (2005) and Dallas Green (2006).

Alumni Night will be held the following day, Saturday, August 7, in which former players living in the tri-state area will be introduced before the game. On Sunday, August 8, an Alumni Batting Challenge will take place pre-game.
