What's up with Dom Brown? New podcast!

POSTED: Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 11:55 PM

Several recent emailers have wondered about the relative anonymity that young outfielder Domonic Brown has been afforded this offseason. Last year at this time, the then-23-year-old top prospect was one of the top stories heading into spring training as he looked to compete for the right to replace Jayson Werth in right field. Brown had torn up every level of the minor leagues and was one of the top prospects in baseball according to Baseball America.

So what happened?

Well, not as much as you might think, at least according to the scouts and executives who talk to Baseball Prospectus minor league guru Kevin Goldstein. On this week's edition of the Philadelphia SportsWeek Podcast, Kevin tells us that Brown is still regarded as an immense talent with a big future by most talent evaluators around the game. Rich Hofmann, meanwhile, thinks the Phillies have to find a way to get Brown into their line-up. And I have a feeling that such a promotion will happen this season.

Kevin also fills us in on some under-the-radar prospects to watch and gives us the low-down on how the rest of baseball views the Phillies' farm system. We also chat with the Wall Street Journal's Mike Sielski and former Giants beat writer and current Daily News/SportsWeek writer Zach Berman about the key personnel differences between the Eagles and the Giants that have allowed New York to reach three Super Bowls since 2000. Are the Eagles built for regular season success but not postseason success? And vice-versa for the Giants?

All this and more comes your way on this week's edition of SWP. Click below to stream it on your computer or download it.

Zorro, seriously? Show us where he was sold as the next Darryl Strawberry.

Just as an aside, we saw Ibanez at the tail end of his career, and while always a class act, he had his ups and downs on the field over the past 3 years. But he had an interesting decade after a slow start to his career.

This is where he ranks among ALL players in baseball history in their 30s (i.e. their age 30 through age 39 seasons):

    - 7th in doubles
    - 8th in RBIs

Dominic Brown rated BA's best Phillies prospect
“Brown, repeatedly compared to Darryl Strawberry, heads a group that made long strides last season, and with an ’08 draft class considered the Phillies’ strongest in years, BA considers the farm system to be in good standing among the rest of baseball.

“Brown wasted no time Tuesday flashing the tools that have earned him comparisons to former Mets star Darryl Strawberry.’’

“Domonic Brown? It would hurt to have a player who is often compared to Darryl Strawberry blossom into a superstar with Strawberry's old team. But who has a better chance of contributing in the World Series this year, Beltran or Brown?’

''Brown, a lanky, left-handed hitter with a sweeping swing that reminds some of Darryl Strawberry’s, was the Phillies’ minor-league player of the year in 2010 when he hit .327 with 20 homers and 68 RBIs in 93 games at Double A and Triple A.''

BTW, other experts comparee him to Eric Davis. I can get you those two if you want.

Zorro, I meant by those who actually rate the prospects, but that's ok -- I can certainly see that some people compared him to Strawberry.

Now I'll ask you to be patient. Again, as a hitter he's right where he should be. His defense will improve.

Yes, I'm patient. That's why I thought it was a bad idea to rush the kid and to keep rushing him. He should stay in AAA as long as possible this year and see what he does. He needs to learn the game and it would be very difficult to do that trying to hit good pitching and the team competing for the WS.

Brown has lots of top tools. Quick bat with power stroke, better idea of strike zone than many najor leagers. His offense seemed way ahead of his defense. On the other hand he has an outstanding arm with plus-plus speed which can make his defense decent. Many major leagers had a bad time at their start such as Mike Schmidt 198 avg. Of course last year gave the chance for many to spout their negativity. Brown has the tools to be outstanding and make these bloggers eat some crow..... Cespedes is out there for teams. Hope if Phills mgt values him as highly as the hype they go after him strongly. First it would be a start at getting team younger. Secondly it could keep him away from Marlins.
