DL a possibility for Victorino

POSTED: Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 10:49 PM

Shane Victorino's visit to hand specialist Randall Culp resulted in the diagnosis of a Grade 1 sprain of his right thumb, leading to the possibility that that the center fielder will finish out the first half on the disabled list.

Victorino will not play tomorrow in the Phillies' series-finale against the Marlins, and the Phillies are off on Thursday. At that point, the team will make a decision on Victorino's status for their three-game series against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park this weekend. If he cannot play, he will likely go on the disabled list, which would sideline him until Tues., July 19, when the Phillies are in Chicago to play the Cubs.

Mayberry knocked out two homers last night so I think Phils have a suitable replacement until Victorino recovers. We should also note that Phils TV announcers indicated that Mayberry's long stride lets him cover a lot of ground and they said he can back-track better than Victorino - let Mayberry move into Ibanez spot when Shane comes back

So, I don't get it. If this is Hamels, all you bloghards would be talking about how 'soft' he is...instead, the guy turns right around and tosses a very good game with more than adequate run support, goes 8, and probably could have gone 9 if they didn't want someone in the bullpen to get the jitters out in a blowout game. Shane Vic gets a pass on the injury - he's a tough guy. Howard gets constantly rammed by you blogging experts despite now leading the league in RBI's because he isn't knocking the homers he once had. So he is considered soft too, I guess. On and on. Maybe this team is just okay the way it is. When will Phillies fans get it that this team is built differently, for modern baseball, and get over trying to assume that they should be the Broad Street Bullies in red pinstripes? You hated Ed Wade but all of you write as though you wish you were him. Time to get a life.

I've had grade 1 sprains on the same thumb in the past and he should be ready to go in a couple games.

Great questions, dudeskins. I was going to ask Murph if he thinks the Phils will give Brandon Moss another shot. I also want Murph's take on Eric Kratz. Is he likely to replace Schneider next year? And what about Podsednik? How close is he to being major-league ready? He would seem to fit into Victorino's slot pretty seamlessly if he's healthy again.

Just asking but why not give Brandon Moss a shot. He has 14 HR @ LHV and has good splits . He was Bostons #1 Prospect a few years back until he got traded to Pittsburgh in the Jason Bay deal. He is a lefty ,I know, and his avg. is around 270 but who knows we might catch lightning in a bottle. Another question is does anyone really know what is wrong with Blanton. Is he Tommy John Bound or what?

This latest injury to Shane will give The Phils a few upcoming games to further evaluate Mayberry & Martinez. I still think that Francisco is a weak leak and bringing in Juan Rivera on the cheap, could be possible. Martinez's versatility will probably continue to keep him around especially with Polanco's back a question mark. Who knows maybe Mayberry starts all three games against Atlanta in center this weekend? This should give The Phils a better idea on their needs into the All Star break.

Martinez did hit a triple off a mop up pitcher last night. Game was settled by that point. His at bats before that were brutal. Victorino needs to get back and play as does Madson. Braves are playing good ball. KK today doesn't look good with this line up against a real pitcher.Mayberry didn't been hit in the minors.

absolutely rest Shane till he's healed up. Martinez and Mayberry can fill in capably till Shane comes back..

I have a theory! The DL is baseball jargon for a vacation. Because of the 162 game season the Phils and other teams that r in contention will put their core players on (vacation) DL to give them time-off! Don't believe all the nonsense that they r hurt, its all BS..IMO..

Victorino already had a two-week "vacation: at the end of May.

The injuries never end with this year's Phils.

Grade I is the simplest sprain you can have. I'd be surprised if he didn't feel good enough to play in a couple more days. Then again, we don't need him falling back into his big looping swing ways just to play thru an injury.....
