Contreras placed on DL
Daily News staff
The Phillies today placed righthanded relief pitcher José Contreras on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain, retroactive to June 20.
To fill Contreras' spot on the 25-man roster, the Phillies brought up lefthander Juan Perez from Triple A Lehigh Valley.
Contreras, 39, who started the season as the Phillies' closer, is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 17 games this season. He has converted all five of his save opportunities while holding opponents to a .220 batting average (11-for-50) in 14.0 innings. Contreras previously spent a month on the disabled list this season with a right flexor pronator strain (April 25-May 26).
Perez has gone 0-3 with four saves and a 3.52 ERA in 28 appearances with Lehigh Valley this season. The 32-year-old has struck out 41 batters in 30.2 innings (12.17 SO/9.0 IP) and held left-handers to a .184 average (7-38). He is 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA in 24 career major league appearances, all with the Pittsburgh Pirates over the 2006-07 seasons.
Perez will wear #53.

Leave Zagurski alone. I have no faith in him, but IF he has anything, it would be a nice story if he made it back from a few chances cut short by arm trouble (ok, and results trouble too) novafan

Nasty comments. Sour grapes. I am sure if any of you couch potatoes that are wannabe GM's or players could do 1/10 of what Zagurski has accomplished, BTW he is in AAA, you might be able to help your office softball team. Get some lives people. It is a game. Run all of the arms up here and try them out. Clearly, the older arms in the bullpen, Lidge included, are nearly done, on their way out, or already finished. I think AbeVigoda has his nose where it shouldn't be... TerryW
How are you so familiar with the smell of Zagurski's anus? Igglesfan

NOW, HOW IMPORTANT IS MADSON ? BYE,BYE JOSE, SORRY TO SEE YOU GO DONDEN31
Oswalt is obviously hurting tonight...he walks funny normally but he was limping noticeably walking back to the dugout after the 1st inning and he's falling off to the 1st base side of the mound on every pitch twice as far as he normally does. Something is not right, groin, hip, lower back. This is my profession, so I know what I'm talking about. Mark1npt
