Contreras has setback
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
While closer Ryan Madson is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday in Clearwater and could be activated when the season resumes on Friday in New York, the Phillies could be without RHP Jose Contreras for a significant amount of time after a setback in his recovery from an elbow strain.
The veteran righthander, who has appeared in just 17 games thanks to two stints on the disabled list, is scheduled to fly to Los Angeles to visit specialist Lewis Yocum.
Contreras, who opened the season as the team’s closer and was expected to play a key role in the bullpen this year and next, has not pitched since June 19.

Contreras did a nice job for us but he's old and broke down. (Maybe Chawlie's fault for overusing him early in the season, but the man knows hitting, not pitching, so it's no surprise.) We really don't need him (or Lidge) with the coming-of-age of the three bullpen heroes. Darrell Van Horn
Don't give up on Herndon quite yet. He has stuff to throw, he just needs some education. His stuff is electric, unlik Baez who simply has no movement on his 95 mph fastball. He tips his pitches and simply isn't effective. Don't count on Lidge to do anything yet. Setbacks are his montra. Madsen should NOT close, until Bastardo gives a reason to move out of the closer spot. Reality folks, baseball is a business and Madsen was/is the best 8th inning thrower in the game. Allowing him to close w/o the heir apperant Bastardo giving up the job simply gives Scott Boris more ammunition at free agency time. Who knows, maybe Ryan goes south to join Jayson Werth in DC. drhoffman
Everyone keeps talking about a "6th" reliever... was anyone watching the Braves series? Perez tore it up this weekend. 5 K's out of 6 batters? Back up the truck and tell them to pick up Herndon, Baez and Kendrick, drop off Lidge and Madsen, and let's be on our way to the Series! duboy
Madson, yes. Lidge, maybe. No way Jose...he's been good but at his age it's been borrowed time. Philly Fan in Kuwait
Scot M. was sent down.Carpenter should follow. If Lidge, Madson come back on time, that still leaves one spot open. It could be a healthier Roy O or another reliever....or better yet, a RH slugger. Ben Fran is now the out guy with Martinez going nowhere till perhaps next Spring. And Gload will be gone too if his leg does not heal properly. So there are some spots Rube can fool with if he can wangle any deals. Koons
I don't know where this 'Calming effect on the young guys," concerning Baez comes from. He is awful. Maybe the young guys think that they can't pitch any worse then Baez does so it calms them down. Johnnyboyl
contreras is done, sadly. he was doing so well at the beginning of the year. wish him luck in rehab from whatever surgery he will need jamarder
In the playoffs you shorten your rotation/bullpen to maybe 9 pitchers. Phils will have the 4 aces as starters, Worley, Kendrick or Blanton as the LR and Madson, Stutes, Bastardo and maybe Lidge as the 4 primary bullpen guys. Contreras, Baez, Herndon won't sniff playoff baseball and Perez could be useful as a 2nd lefty out of the bullpen. Maybe they will get another bullpen piece, lord knows Heath Bell could help put this team over the top, but if they make a move it might be after the trade deadline during the waiver-wire process. ESFjellin- I will be writing Murph's blog when he is on vacation
Doesn't sound good for Contreras.. This could spell the end for him based on his age. Amaro needs to add another relief pitcher for the stretch run. As everyone has posted, and I agree with..Herndon and Baez cannot be counted on to produce. If Lidge could somehow return that would solve the problem.. but who knows whether he has anything left? bradco
You anti-Herndon guys are crazy. He's 25 and looks it. But he's a Major Leaguer. I can't defend Baez but our bullpen has been exceptional -- really, really good -- this year. The fact that we can be on closer No. 4 -- Bastardo -- and he's lights out, is a tribute to Amaro, like it or not. And KK seems to be our version of Tim Wakefield, going from mediocre (but valuable) 5th starter to the 'pen, and being pretty effective there. Add it up and this ties for out best first half EVER. No carping allowed. eman
Heath Bell???? Are you kidding me? Heath Bell is not as good as the relievers we already have and would kill signing Cole Hamels. Send Herndon down, maybe Baez too, but if I had to keep one, it would be Baez for his presence with the young guys. Keep Kendrick for long relief and for a fifth starter, at least until Joe or Roy makes it back. Kyle is not one of the aces, but if you get 6 innings and 4 or fewer runs, we will do alright with him. And he usually does get the job done as a long middle inning bullpen guy. Besides, my wife thinks he is cute... GHK
Hope we can get Contreas back for the playoffs... Badhog
As hard as it is to say it, I agree that Baez and Herndon should both go. I also think it would be a mistake to expect Lidge to be the same as before (2008 version). I think RAJ needs to work some fiscal magic and get Heath Bell and Ludwick too from San Diego. The starters have masked a variety of issues, but the problem is that they are pitching way too many innings and it could show later on in the year. PhillyRules
Calling Tommy John... hey buddy
why are we worried about a reliable 6th inning arm when 4/5 of the starters go 7 or more every time out? Lidge and Madson are on their way back. Stutes is the real deal, Bastardo can go back to the 8th inning. We're fine. Relax seaonasdad
Baez to me is the clear candidate to go. Herndon is fine for mop up duty. RAJ needs to snag a reliable arm at the deadline to take over the 6th inning role. kdavis2172
Over exposed,
Send Kendrick down and who pitches every 5th day? DeFratus is not exactly tearing it up for the Iron Pigs, either. Schwimmer on the other hand is having a great year. Baez is around because he has a calming effect on the young guys in the bullpen. For whatever reason, they seem to look up to him as kind of a mentor....and translator. Armyofthe15Monkies
i'd like the phillies to carbon date his teeth. he's probably closer to 50 than 40 mold1103
Sounds like the Big Truck had another blowout...too bad bc he's been solid for the most part this year. Herndon and Baez should catch the next bus out of town, but KK is a good long relief guy to have in the 'pen. Souled0ut1
I agree. Herndon sucks! The Sherm
If not for the young guys, what a disaster this season could have been. Contreras being lost for god knows how long and Madson being on DL for significant time. My only question is, why did it take Amaro and Charlie so long to see what most intelligent Phillie fans knew. Why are we still carrying guys like Baez, Kendrick and until recently Romero? The young guns couldnt be any worse and you never know, they might surprise you! Schmimmer and DeFratus are tearing it up, so my question again, why are we sticking with Baez,Herndon, and Kendrick? Send Herndon and Kenrick down now and see what Schimmer and De Fratus can do. Cant be worse then those two Over_Exposed- Most wins in MLB and a starting pitching rotation which goes 7+ 4 out of 5 nights. Who cares about our 10th, 11th or 12th reliever? These guys don't get to pitch, unless its mop up duty. I was more concerned about a lefty specialist but maybe (and just maybe) they found that pitcher in Perez this weekend.
In the next week or two, Madson and Lidge will return. So our bullpen rotation will be Perez/Lidge in the 7th, Stutes/Bastardo in the 8th, and Madson to close. Baez will be our mop up guy (just a guess, given he is making big bucks and Herndon would be better suited pitching regularly in AAA). dankil13
