I believe in Karma. And days like today are the reason why. Over the past couple of weeks, I have seen the worst of this country's summer weather. From 115 degrees and dry in Arizona to 55 degrees and damp in San Francisco, to mid-80's and sticky in Philadelphia. It turns out, the reward was this: a picture-perfect Monday afternoon with a light breeze and no clouds in the sky and temperatures in the high 70's with no humidity. I'd say it is a perfect day for baseball, but really it is a perfect day for anything: hiking, biking, reading, rowing, sleeping, running, or even jaywalking.

Really interested in tonight's game. The Phillies offense is hitting just .230 and averagin 2.9 runs in its last 11 games. Not coincidentally, they have lost eight of those 11. Tonight, they'll be facing a pitcher who has absolutely owned them over the past couple of seasons in Cubs righthander Rich Harden. In three career starts against the Phils, including one this season, he has allowed just two earned runs and nine hits while striking out 22 in 20 innings.

The struggles of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard have been well documented over the past couple of weeks. Utley has not had a multi-hit game since going 3-for-4 against St. Louis on July 26. Since the start of the Phillies' West Coast trip, he is 9-for-43 (.209) with two XBH, 3 RBI and 12 strikeouts.

Howard, meanwhile, is homerless in last 12 Games (51 PA, 47 AB) and 53 PA, 48 AB overall. He is 12-for-his-last-50, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 19 SO since the start of the Phillies seven-game West Coast trip in Arizona and San Francisco.

But another reason why the Phillies offense has hit a lull lies in the bottom of their order, where Pedro Feliz has struggled immensely. Feliz was one of the big spark plugs in the offense during the first few months of the season. But he has just eight hits in his last 42 at-bats, dating back to the start of that aforementioned West Coast trip.

I'm most interested tonight in seeing how J.A. Happ responds to a couple of things: first, to the 127 pitches - a career high - he threw in a complete game shutout against the Rockies last week. Second, to playing in his hometown, in front of a big contingent of family and friends.

The Phillies are struggling and the division lead has shrunk - but time-out for a second - having grown up watching some bad Phillies teams - it is awesome watching a Phillies pennant race in August. Every season is a different narrative. This is fun.

Rich Dubee's starters other than CLiff Lee are 1-8 the last 9 games. He needs to be replaced with either Leo Mazzone, Jamie Moyer, or Rod Nichols. Gomer Manual fired Jimmy Williams and the 3rd base coach after winning the world series, he can fire Dubee too. He wanted Dick Pole as his pitching coach when he took the gig.

This is one of those funks where the whole offense (except for Vic and Jroll) is basically slumping. They will find it in Wrigley this week.

Dr. Michael, how many consecutive days are you going to post the same thing about Dubee? I think we all get your point. Do you think the fact that "Dubees starters besides Lee" are 1-8 in the last 9 games has anything to do with the fact that the offense has been completely flat?? They would have had a few more wins in there if the offense even picked up 3 runs in a couple of those games. The past 11 games the offenses average of .230 is the main problem.

A visit to the Friendly Confines is usually a cure to whatever particular ailments the Phils are displaying, year in and year out. Remember how the struggling Phils would visit the Cubbies and MJS would start jacking them out of the park? 18-17, 23-I forget.

Dr. Michael, you really have absolutely no clue. For a supposed Ph.D("I have a doctorate, look at me, look at me, I'm earning $40k a year & have $200k in school loans"), your education clearly does not carry over to understanding the game of baseball. First of all Williams wasn't fired, he quit genius. Secondly, and as philsfan in the atx pointed out, the reason for their recent slump has nothing to do with their starting pitching. Was Dubee good enough last year when their starting pitching carried them to a World Series? Was "Gomer Manual"--once again nice spelling Mr. Ph.D--smart enough to lead the entire team to a WS? Do me a favor and round up Philly10 and why don't you guys take a hiatus from commenting...preferably forever.

Phils atx and Delaina-You're both morons. I have a Phd and I am scout for an American League team and also was a college pitching coach. Gomer is not a misspelling, it's a nickname. I would be surprised if you arent on food stamps and are dumb enough to flunk put of collumity college.

Utley, Werth, Howard, and Victorino are struggling a lot more than Feliz. Those four are all hitting .227 or lower this month. Utley is hitting .148.

Dr. Michael, no one is impressed that you know someone's nickname. Stop calling others morons to make up for your cranial shortcomings. Here is a rundown of the last two starts for Dubee's starters. Blanton gave up 2 & 3 ER (ps the two runs was against lincecum), Happ gave up 2 ER & 0 in a CG, Hamels gave up 6 & 4 ER (I'll conceed that Cole is struggling), Moyer gave up 6 & 2 ER in 5 IP each. Our starters gave up 3 ER or less in 5 out of those 8 starts, and with our offense we should win those games. Don't blame Dubee, thats just rediculous. The offense is struggling, but will get back on track.

Oh by the way Dr. Michael, I doubt you have a Phd, unless it is an honorary one. And who in the American League are you a scout for? The Royals? The Orioles? I'd guess the Orioles, and I'd have to conclude that you scouted Adam Eaton last year and recommended that the Orioles pick him up. College pitching coach, maybe D-III for a perenial loser. I'll keep waiting to read something intelligent out of you.
