Carrasco scratched from Triple A start

POSTED: Wednesday, July 29, 2009, 11:37 AM

Some potentially interesting developments as the trade deadline approaches at Triple A Lehigh Valley this morning.

Pitcher Carlos Carrasco was scratched from his scheduled start this morning against Columbus. There is no indication that Carrasco is hurt.

Shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson also were not in the Ironpigs' lineup. However, Donald is coming off knee surgery and was not scheduled to play with an early day game after a night game. Marson caught last night and also might be sitting out for the same reason.

An earlier report that outfielder Michael Taylor was not playing for Lehigh Valley is incorrect.

Meanwhile, ESPN.com is reporting that the Indians have three scouts at the Triple A game, possibly pointing to the acquisition of Cliff Lee.

Phillies scout Charley Kerfeld watched Lee pitch Sunday. He was in Seattle last night to see Jarrod Washburn and is scheduled to be there again today to see Toronto's Roy Halladay.

In another move, the Phillies promoted Scott Mathieson from Clearwater to Double A Reading. Lefthander reliever Jason Mackintosh was placed on the disabled list. Mathieson's promotion does not appear related to a potential deal, but he could be a late-season bullpen option for the Phillies if his recovery is coming along as well as reported.

More to come ...

I'm upset someone mention kissing and Howard Eskin in the same sentence. That's an image I could have lived without.

Any possibility of dealing Carrasco, Donald, Marson for Lee and then using Lee as another chip to Toronto?

Carrasco, Donald or Marson, Knapp and Trevor May for Cliff Lee...now let's see if they can get some bullpen help by trading Rodrigo Lopez?

If the Phillies acquire Lee without parting with Happ, Drabek, Taylor or Brown, let's give Amaro some credit. That would be a steal. The Phillies positioned to make three straight World Series...plus have an outfield of Brown, Victorino and Taylor in three years and a rotation led by Hamels, Drabek, and Happ. Nicely done, Ruben. Bet they get a reliever or a righty for the bench in the deal, too.

Lopez goes back to the minors, Martinez goes to the bullpen. Your Rotation looks like Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Happ. And this trade leaves open the possibility of Halladay....which makes you look like this...Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Moyer

Matthieson is working out of the bullpen, so don't expect him to take a spot in the rotation in Reading. He was putting up very good numbers in Clearwater. (5 games, 7 innings, 4 hits allowed, 9 strikeouts). The man's got some serious character if he manages to claw his way back to the big leagues after three arm injuries.

Cliff Lee just spoke on 950 with Jody Mac. He sounds alot like Halladay. He really wants the opportunity to pitch in the post season. I wouldn't want to have to face Hamels and Lee if I were the Dodgers.

They need Roy Halladay. Simple. Four leftys in our rotation? Are you serious? Listen this is all about money. We save $10M over the next year and a half with Lee. It's about saving our "prospects" because they're cheaper. The odds of them panning our are slim as it is, and even if they do, what will this team look like when it's time for them to produce? Ruben was afraid. Simple.

JPK: Expext Pedro to go to the Pen as middle inning eater and Lopez to be traded for either low level prospects or RP. He can't be optioned back to minors and will never pass waivers after going 3-0 with us this month

That package sounds great to me. Lee for Carrasco, Marson & Donald? But something nags at me: if Lee does come to play in Philadelphia, what kind of an impact will 4 lefties in the rotation carry? The Dodgers in the '08 NLCS had a similar situation and it was certainly one of their failings...

If they get Lee without giving up Happ, they'll have four lefties in the starting rotation.
