Carrasco scratched from Triple A start
Daily News staff
Some potentially interesting developments as the trade deadline approaches at Triple A Lehigh Valley this morning.
Pitcher Carlos Carrasco was scratched from his scheduled start this morning against Columbus. There is no indication that Carrasco is hurt.
Shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson also were not in the Ironpigs' lineup. However, Donald is coming off knee surgery and was not scheduled to play with an early day game after a night game. Marson caught last night and also might be sitting out for the same reason.
An earlier report that outfielder Michael Taylor was not playing for Lehigh Valley is incorrect.
Meanwhile, ESPN.com is reporting that the Indians have three scouts at the Triple A game, possibly pointing to the acquisition of Cliff Lee.
Phillies scout Charley Kerfeld watched Lee pitch Sunday. He was in Seattle last night to see Jarrod Washburn and is scheduled to be there again today to see Toronto's Roy Halladay.
In another move, the Phillies promoted Scott Mathieson from Clearwater to Double A Reading. Lefthander reliever Jason Mackintosh was placed on the disabled list. Mathieson's promotion does not appear related to a potential deal, but he could be a late-season bullpen option for the Phillies if his recovery is coming along as well as reported.
More to come ...
Way to break it down, fan_in_jerusalem, though we don't yet know for sure that we'll be keeping both Happ and Drabek. I gotta think that Cleveland will want a major-league-ready pitcher like Happ to slide into the rotation. As for twothousandetc: go back to rooting for Stefanski and the Sixers! Cheesedog
Ok smart guys who didn't want to give up "the future" for Halladay. Doesn't giving up 4 of your top 10 prospects amount to the same thing? But your OK with this deal but not getting one of the best pitchers in baseball? Explain..........................................But if the deal described by the source is accurate, the Lee trade would be a coup for both the Phillies and Indians. The Phillies would be getting the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner for the rest of 2009 and '10 without giving up any of the three players the Blue Jays initially wanted for Roy Halladay — left-hander J.A. Happ, right-hander Kyle Drabek and outfielder Dominic Brown. The Indians, meanwhile, would be getting four of the Phillies' top 10 prospects according to Baseball America's preseason rankings. Carrasco was rated second, Marson third, Donald fourth and Knapp 10th. Knapp, who does not turn 19 until Aug. 31, is currently sidelined with shoulder stiffness, but one scout says his upside is greater than Drabek's, calling the 6-foot-5, 215-pound righty a "Halladay clone." jpk... indeed getting Lee puts 7 guys in the rotation, as well as four lefties. Could it be that the Phils plan on turning around and sending Happ to the Orioles for George Sherrill for the pen? PSU DEJA BLUE
Who cares about 4 lefties in the rotation. Hamels and Moyer just had back to back great starts. I think it was Kansas City just faced 8 lefty starters in a row and had a bad record. What would be the problem? ktdb05
They should trade Donald, Marson and Carrasco for Harris, Dorn and Cerrano? They may even get JoBoo in the deal! spowlick
2008 i also have to add that you comments are ridiculous. All of us want Halladay but Cliff Lee is a very very good pitcher as well. If we can keep Happ and Drabek and get him then its hard to say that wasnt the right move. Nobody is giving in to Torontos demands, they are unrealistic. philsfan in the atx
All the morons on here still amaze and confound......Lee is a major upgrade for the rotation. Superb prospects are saved for the next 3 years and we still have chips on the roster to trade for another RP or RH PH. Talk about rounding out a team. The Phils have the potential to put together one of the soundest ballclubs anyone has seen in baseball in quite some years. Such a blessing that most of you alcoholic fans from McFadden's and 12 year olds out on summer break have no say in running this front office. Mark1npt

In the grand scheme of things I would agree that Halladay would have been the better selection but is Lee that bad of a choice? In my opinion it leaves other prospects like Taylor for potential middle relief/RH bat. exrec
I think it is funny Cleveland has 3 scouts at this game and 0 of the prospects they want are playing. HAHA kozykoz26- when is the last time a phillies gm got someone as good as cliff lee in a trade? twothousandeight is a tool. pgcd3
Happ would have to be included along with the 3 mentioned. There is no way Cleveland gives up Lee for floundering Carrasco, injured Donald, and solid Marson alone. Happ would have to be in the package as well. kozykoz26
No one is going to give us anything good for Lopez, unless they have an abundance of bullpen or right handed bats on their bench and think he can help them get to the postseason this year. Who that is, i don't know. Unless Baltimore wants him back for the sake of nostalgia, he's going to either be successful in the Phils pen, battle with Pedro for the fifth spot for a few weeks, (six starters for a stretch might not be bad for our starters' arms), or be waived and picked up by someone for nothing. Captain: I'll try to explain teh difference. Donald is blocked in Phila for the next 2 years as both Utley and Rollins are signed through 2013 and 2011 respectively. He'll be a bench player at best for us. Marson is blocked, or at least slowed by Ruiz, who both Charlie and the pitchers love. Again, he'd be a bench player at best. Carlos is would be a starter for us either next year or in 2011, but he's not Happ nor Drabek; one of whom is helping the team now and the other expected to be a top of the rotation guy, which Carlos will never be it seems. As for the 4th player, assuming you mean Knapp, he's still a long way away unless we were to rush him as emergency. It's not about how good the prospects are, but how much they can help our team in the near future. fan_in_jerusalem
Obviouly Lee is an upgrade from what we have. But we're turning down a chance to be a true dynasty. You ask me what the big deal of having four leftys in the rotation is? You need a change of pace, a different look. You don't know if you're going to go up against a team like the Cubs who have a righty-heavy lineup. It's a problem. We're not doing all we can do to win with this team. I don't think that's debatable. twothousandeight
