The Phillies have optioned pitcher Carlos Carrasco and outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the minor leagues.

Carrasco's demotion crystallizes the battle for the fifth starter spot between J.A. Happ and Chan Ho Park.

Second baseman Marcus Giles was released. Giles was attempting to make a comeback after spending last season out of baseball. The pace of Chase Utley's recovery likely made Giles expendable.

The Phillies also told reliever Mike Koplove, a South Philly native; outfielder Jason Ellison; and veteran infielder Pablo Ozuna they will not make the team, but the three will accompany the team north for the weekend exhibition series at Citizens Bank Park.

Will Koplove/Majewski still go to Lehigh Valley? And if so, do you think we'll see them at any point this season??

Tough on Kop and Maj. They had good springs but fell victim to decision to hold onto the ragtag lefty from SF, I hope both go to LV and get a chance later on when the smoke clears. Ozuna is a keeper fo I hope he stays in the system just in case. Mayberry has returned to his headbobbing, overswinging style, which I though Milt had corrected. He has some speed and pop so lets hope he refines it in A-town.

Mayberry did not help himself yesterday with a very bad AB with men on second and third and nobody out. I agree Mick, he over swung big time and hit a lazy pop up to the first baseman. It was evident he was pressing a little bit. Let’s hope the hitting coach at AAA helps him become a better contact hitter. The kid has lots of talent.

Mayberry needs consistent AB's and he won't get them as a bench player...it should be no surprise that he was optioned...

Mayberry will be back if any of our Of go down, or if we manage to trade Jenkins.

Are there people still depending on Kendrick? He is a career minor leaguer.

I agree on Ozuno. I hope they keep him around. He had a really nice spring.

Majewski and Mosebach are the only ones left fighting for spots, they have not been moved yet... But obviously the Taschner trade wont help their chances of making the big club. They should end up in LV by Saturday.

Well Condrey is older and not that much better if any better. Why not move him and keep Gary, Bob, or Mike?

I wish we had some speed off the bench like we had two years ago. But then again, that team didn't win a World Series Title! So maybe I'll just relax and cheer the team on to the next one.
