Cardinals reportedly interested in Romero

POSTED: Friday, June 17, 2011, 11:27 AM

Perhaps the Phillies could see J.C. Romero sooner than they thought.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a team source said the Cardinals planned to investigate Romero's availability. The lefty reliever was designated for assignment after yesterday's game, meaning the Phillies have 10 days to release him, outright or trade him.

According to the report, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa did not dismiss Romero as a person of interest and general manager John Mozeliak seems willing to look for bullpen help.

Romero was on the Cardinals' radar in the offseason before he returned to the Phillies on a 1-year deal.

Interesting, he'll be Dave Duncan's next project.

Does that mean the Cardinals pick up his salary and the Phillies get to take the remaining salary off their books and, ultimately, a little more flexibility in regards to the luxury tax?

Phils would be able to remove his salary from their books only if another team puts in a waiver claim (not likely). If he goes through waivers Phils are on the hook for his salary though they will probably release him (given their relief options). One released signing team only needs to pay a pro-rated portion of the major league minimum ($414,000) with less than half the season. Phils relief likely to be only about $200-K.

Insert a comma between "adios" and "muchachos". I think you broke the rule that a post criticizing grammar should have less than three grammar and spelling errors.

If JC ROMERO couyld sue all PHILLES FANS for libel and slander, he could make more money than what the SLAVE DRIVER PHILLIES were paying him.

If they want Romero tell them we have another winner in Baez maybe we can unload the 6 million and have some breathing room, not to mention pitchers who have a chance to get outs

He's a left-handed reliever, with experience and a pretty low price tag. No surprise.

I only hope the Cardinals sign him. Addition by subtraction and addition by having him sign with a league rival. Will somebody let me know RAJ makes a bad move?

Yes, the Cards will assume his contract. But I think, if they wait the 10 days and he clears waivers, they can sign him for the (rest of the) minimum and the Phillies still have to pay his salary.

@nicholas- muchachos is plural. Your missive should read, "Adios
    muchacho."
