Burrell Leaves with Discomfort in Lower Back
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
The news is coming fast and furious today. . .
Pat Burrell left batting practice today after experiencing discomfort in his lower back while taking a swing. He left the field, gingerly walking down the steps before disappearing into the clubhouse.
The official word from the Phillies is that he will be re-evaluated tomorrow.
I have no idea how serious it might be.
Burrell is one of the few Phillies who had success against Brewers righthander Yovani Gallardo last season. Burrell hit a solo home run off the young starter in the seventh inning of the Phillies' eventual loss.
Gallardo will start Game One on Wednesday.
I don't expect to hear anything else tonight, so stay tuned tomorrow.
Awesome nostalgia. Pat the Bat goes 1 for18 in the WS and ends up in two parades. Eephus
Take the Stairs to the next level. Matt will bat for the aching Pat. mick314
Also, Pat's recent production (or lack thereof) isn't the only loss, ya naysayers! Losin' a team leader is always tough in the playoffs. Lando_M
If Burrell's out for more than batting practice, God forbid, I'd put money on Manuel shuffling the outfield like an AC dealer. Dobbs/Stairs to supplement Burrell's power. I wonder if there's any chance CM takes the risk after 6 or 7 frames putting Golson in to supplement speed. Werth, Golson, Victorino is an outfield with incredible quickness; and a lineup that has more ability to manufacture runs. Of course, rookies in the playoffs... Lando_M

Could this injury be the Kimmo Timonen injury of the baseball playoffs? Night before the opening of a series, key player goes down w/an injury... luck just never seems to go our way! BrianHarrisburg
You mean you are worried about how to replace Burrell? Are you kidding me? He is dragging his wreched 2nd half into the playoffs and is in the midst one of his infamous horrible slumps. makrom
Scott Sheridan will take care of him. He'll be fine! mwilx1
I would add Greg Golson to the playoff roster and start him in CF and move Werth to LF and Victorino to RF. Then if somehow Golson was able to get on base in the late innings Pat could come in and at least pinch run for him. hehehe power808
I have breaking news for you Murph. It seems that the play by play announcer for the Brewers will be doing play by play for the Phillies-Brewers game on TBS. Can you believe this? His name is Brian Anderson & the Phillies are getting a raw deal because at the very least, Larry Andersen should be there or Tom McCarthy. On top of that, Joe Simpson of the Braves will be his partner in the booth. Us Phillie fans should be fired up over this & it's just another reason for them to get by this series so at least their games in the NLCS will be shown on Fox (although after what McCarver did the other day, I'm not so keen on watching them too). This info courtesy of the #1 Phillies fan in Connecticut!!! badjake35
Barry Bonds is for hire! And plays left field! jmargo23
As a Brewers fan, I agree. I hope Pat is OK. An automatic out in the lineup. da_bone
How do we replace Pat? We need something big and slow that can't hit anymore. Hey, how about Matt Stairs?! ozey- move werth to right field and start jenkins in left. the obvious move Ryan
Murph your mixing up tonights and tomorrows shayrod
I would start Dobbs in right or left, and Feliz at 3rd. You get the defense in at 3rd, and Dobbs is better in the OF than Burrell. dankil13
trade him now bigphillydad
Beat Zo by over a half hour. Good work Murph scotty82
I know Pat hasn't hit well the past 2 months, but he did have some clutch hits and solid AB's down the stretch. Unlike most of our hitters, he knows how to work the count (see his walk totals for the season) and make the opposing pitcher throw a ton of pitches. This is a substantial blow if it is serious and he is out for several games. The others will need to step it up as they have all month long. fcskills- They have until tomorrow morning to submit the roster. If he wasn't in the plans, you can bet he will now. EL Zorro
Is Jenkins even on the roster? Bake McBride
If Burrell's out, I'd rather see Stairs than Jenkins. Would Charlie really consider Jenkins? It's the Brewers, sure -- but Jenkins is 0-7 against them this year and is, well, Jenkins. I'd rather have him cheerleading than playing. Northerly

No big loss. Jenkins, the former Brewer will pick up the slack and more. He will become a Legend. In GEOFF we Trust. Leron
lets hope pat is ok for tomm, but I don't see how a back can feel much better in less than 24 hrs (that's without swinging a bat with force) Anyway pretty simple here..werth goes to LF and Jenkins gets the nod in RF Nails
i would be upset if burrell gave us anything in the past 4 months. matt stairs here we come. hit jimmy 1, shane 2, chase 3, werth 4, howard 5 (or vice versa with werth vs rhp) stairs 6, feliz/dobbs 7, ruiz/coste 8. no difference Snakes
Lets thanks Pat Burrell for participating in this year's playoffs.. gallen024
Will we see Werth in left and Jenkins in right for Game 1? Jenk at least knows this Gallardo kid, plus he's a lefty against a righty. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer if Burrell was OK. Nutburgers- I hope is nothing serious. He can take the day off tomorrow, which will allow Charlie to put an extra lefty in the lineup against the rookie Gallardo. Now, he is going to be needed big time on Thursday against Sabathia. EL Zorro
