Brown, De Fratus recalled
Paul Hagen
The Phillies recalled outfielder Domonic Brown and righthander Justin De Fratus and selected the contracts of catcher Erik Kratz, lefthander Joe Savery and outfielder Brandon Moss from Triple A Lehigh Valley, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said tonight.
Brown, 24, hit .261 with six doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI in 41 games for Lehigh Valley this season. In 89 career games with the Phillies, Brown has a .237 average with seven home runs and 32 RBI, including a .246 average in 54 games earlier this season.
De Fratus went 6-3 with a 2.99 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 75.1 innings between Reading and Lehigh Valley this season. The 23-year-old went 2-3 with a 3.73 ERA in 28 games for the IronPigs following his promotion to triple-A.
Kratz, 31, hit .288 with 19 doubles, 15 HR and 53 RBI in 103 games with Lehigh Valley this season. He was selected to the International League’s midseason All-Star team in July.
Savery finished the regular season 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA for Lehigh Valley. He struck out 26 batters in 25 innings and held lefthanded hitters to a .192 average (5-26). Drafted as a starting pitcher, Savery spent four years on the mound before being converted to a first baseman last fall. He opened the 2011 season at first base for Class A Clearwater and earned Player of the Month honors for April after hitting .450 in 21 games for the Threshers.

Kratz should be playing on the Phillies instead of Schneider right now. Rutgers82- Have you seen the Phillies record when Schneider starts? Give me a catcher who calls a good game over on offensive catcher any day of the week. Remember the name Mike Lieberthal. He played for the Phillies from 94' to 06'. What happened during that time period? NO PLAYOFF APPEARANCES.
oh no not brown.. hardball
Anyone but Brown.....oh Please! Lynnwood
Only one pitcher & no lefties for the pen ? erdrick- I may be mistaken, but I believe Joe Savery is a lefty.

Yeah! Calling up Brown is a terrible idea! Gload and Bowker are all the lefty bench bats a team could ever need! wbodisc

Why are these people down on Brown? Because he didn't come out of the shoot hitting .400 with 50 home runs and 100 RBIs? You would rather have a guy turning 40 stay in left field? Brown has the tools but he has been handled poorly (as many other rookies have been) by the Phillies bumbling, moronic management who really don't know how to nurture and develop young talent as compared to other farm systems. The ones that come through, if you notice are far and few and even those are late bloomers, just take Mayberry.
I don't want to cringe every time Brown comes to the plate and kills the Phillies in an opposing uniform which is what will probably end up happening. Its Manuel who should be fired immediately after the post season for continuing to be the most outrageously incompetent, inept manager in the history of major league baseball and has continued to ride the wave of luck with great teams who owe no credit to him. Take tonight, game on the line and he puts in a rookie when he could have put in Stutes who is as least proven. Regardless, whether its bumbling field decisions or the total inability to communicate or motivate his players, Manuel is a disaster and the day they fire his rear will be a day to celebrate. daystrum- Because they're stupid ...
phillyl0 - Only a moron such of yourself can find a negative in a manager with 97 wins.
sleaker - Brown doesn't deserve to be called up. Why? He wasn't even playing the field during the playoffs for the Pigs. He was a DH. He only had a hit in almost 20 AB with no RBI and runs scores. In the last two games he hit into two rally killing DP and struck out 4 times. He didn't even play last night. He's been terrible since last year. And this is how they compensate him?

Two things will make a great baseball season: first will of course be winning it all and it would even be sweeter if it included the savory aroma of final revenge against the Yankees. Secondly, would be the unequivocal dismissal of Cholly "Bone Head" Manuel immediately following the conclusion of the Series. How sweet that would be! Fantasy is for free. FIRE CHOLLY FIRE CHOLLY FIRE CHOLLY - music to our ears:-) daystrum- daystrum are you a Marlins fan? Sure that's it! You want Charlie to be fired so he can go to Florida. Then maybe you and the five other Marlins fans can fill up that new ball park.
cahris
Yeah, daystrum the front office and manager are terrible, that's why by tomorrow night they'll have won their fifth straight NL East title; a stretch that includes a WS title, two NL Pennants, and a damn good chance to win the whole thing again this year. The other clubs play guys like Dom Brown every day because they're not contenders. The 2011 Phils can't afford to have him in the lineup, either offensively or defensively. They're not getting rid of Brown, he'll probably be their regular LF next year if he does anything right in spring training, but he has to get it done, you can't expect the Phils to just hand him the job. Charlie is the best manager in the history of the club and you better get used to that idea whether you love it or not. drbob1
the only bone head here is you cholly is the best manager in baseball hands down winning 97 games is not luck with all the injuries he's a great manager. ocpop
Great news about Joe Savery and Brandon Moss. The Allentown Call is reporting that Savery was "in tears" when he got the word that he will be wearing a major league uniform for the first time and Moss was like "a kid in a candy store" when he learned he was being selected and added to the major league roster. Both deserving. The Joe Savery story is amazing from a left fielder/first baseman/DH/one game pitcher to start the season in Clearwater. To a short reliever/DH in Reading by mid season. Then to a full time reliever for Lehigh Valley and now a lefty out of the pen for the Phillies to close out the season is a story of no equal. I saw Brandon Moss hit two of the longest home runs any where this season. In the first round of the playoffs against Pawtucket he lined one over the left center field wall well over 400 ft away and tonight he hit a moon shot that cleared all the four levels of bill boards in right as it left Coca Cola Park for the IronPigs only run as they were eliminated the Governor's Cup finals by Columbus. Moss who showed a powerful left handed bat was the leading hitter in the playoffs going 10 for 26 with four homers.
On the other hand Domonic Brown is a sad sad story. Sandberg benched him in the final playoff game. He was hitting 1 for 18 as the Pigs DH in the post season and was last of all players in hitting in the post season. He was used as a first base coach for a couple of innings but that was all we saw of him in the elimination game. Dull- Great post, and only thing to add is that local guy Erik Kratz has been rock solid all season...If Brian Schneider didn't have the "lucky charm" stigma going for him (as well as a guaranteed deal), Kratz would have been up and in his place since June....Interesting to see how Brown handles this limited opportuninty after playing dreadfully the last two months.....Savery and Moss were great stories this year...it's a shame the Phils didn't bring up Rich Thompson as well.
bearsfriend - Schneider calls a good game. I will take that 10 out of 10 times over a catcher who is good offensively but doesn't call a good game.
Good for Savery! paolibulldog- He is one of the best stories in the organization this year. Here's hoping he has continued success.

No doubt Charlie made some poor decisions tonight. In addition to using Schwimmer over Stutes, Ibanez was used up in a poor situation as a pinch hitter.. With 2 outs and no one on base, Charlie chose to use Ibanez to face tough lefty Garcia. I know we didn't have righty bats to use.. but in that spot..why not use Pete Orr instead of a key bat who does not handle junk balling lefties well. Ibanez could have been saved to face a righty later on in the game. Schwimmer looks like a career minor leaguer to me..Huge man that you'd expect to come in and throw hard but instead he's a nibbler with a so-so breaking pitch and an average fastball. There are many concerns right now about the Phillies.. but the biggest has to be Antonio Bastardo. Something is not right with him.. Not only is his control off.. but his velocity is noticably down from his normal level. Batters are getting around on him now that he's gone from throwing in the mid 90's to around 90-91. If he does not return to form and we have to use Lidge more...I think we have a real huge problem.. Worley does not translate to a good relief pitcher as he has been having trouble with his control also..Watch for the Phillies to see what DeFratus and Savery have going..If they show well, they could end up being on the post season team. Give Moss a chance too.. Gload and Bowker are clearly not the answer as a lefty pinch hitter for the post season. bradco- You should pay attention to the game. Stutes pitched two innings the day before and was available only in an emergency last night. Ibanez came into a tie game in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on first, not with the bases empty. There were signs that Garcia was vulnerable. He gave up a hit to Mayberry that inning & then a walk to Ruiz. That's a key spot, especially for a team that has been scoring a lot of two-out runs. Would have been nice to have a right-hander available to use instead of Raul, but there's no way Pete Orr is the play there.
phillyl0 - You can't be on the post season roster if you are not on the 25 man roster. So Moss and Savery are out. The Phillies do have the option of replacing Contreas on the roster so one of them might have a slight chance but I do not see where they fit on the roseter because Kendrick is a lock....

Brown could not hit in Triple A for Lehigh, yet he was promoted. Wow, the Phillies must be trying to maintain his diminishing value. When Wade didn't want him in the Pence package it spoke volumns. Savet and Moss are great stories. Moss deserved the spot over Bowker. THE wonderful GM wanted to show how smart he was again. How is that offense? wmontanez27
ummm...Stutes pitched two innings on Thursday....he obviously didnt want to use him........that said, your comment about bastardo is on the money....3 balls were squared up against him....Whether Worley translatest o late relief well or not, he will be in the pen starting 3 or 4 days from now and I expect him to be pitching later in games the rest of the way TheLon
Phils are 28-4 when Schneider starts so before he gets cut let's think about it first. Its not all just luck. cxl72- It is absolutely luck. He has an OPS of .507 and is below average defensively. He may be 28-4 as a starter, but it has nothing to do with him. He has a WAR of -0.8, meaning he is performing worse than a minor league free agent.
Armyofthe15Monkies - "he's below average defensively" ... because you say so? And here are some other Phillies "performing worse than a minor league free agent," based on their 2011 WAR values: David Herndon, Michael Stutes, Michael Martinez, Ross Gload, Wilson Valdez. Not for nothing, but Eric Kratz "performed worse than a minor league free agent" himself during his shot at the big leagues last year.

Just wondering.....Is Sandberg joining the team as a bench coach too? Phils have also brought up a coach in Septembers in previous years. dm089
Dom Brown---The Enigma Kid. Romus
We really dont know about Kratz's catching or game calling. Hoping Savery can be needed 2nd lefty. One loss and some people are all out of joint. Don w
Well I admit I have not followed Savery but if he teared up while being told that he is going to the show that's the kind of player I want on this team. A player who cares about being in the majors and will do what he has to do to stay in the majors. male
As for Dom Brown I hope he understands that this is it no more mr. nice guy put up or get out! Also I still like mayberry over brown male
DULL--Outstanding post!!!D Brown--may get a good talking to by some of
the Phils. He definitely needs help and i think it is mental. HO HUM
Cholly is a very good manager off the field. He does a tremendous job of getting guys to play well for him, quelling any clubhouse problems, keeping the bench guys involved, etc. But he is one of the worst game managers in MLB. His teams win lots of games because they are simply have better performing talent than the opposition. Put them in close games where managerial strategy becomes a factor in the outcome and Cholly is a real handicap. When he had Jimmy Williams to help make decisions on the bench, it masked this weakness. Mr. Baseball- Cholly might be winning on talent alone now, but it's hard to ignore that there were other teams in the '08 playoffs that were more talented than the Phils. Remember that rotation? Woof. Mike P
@Daystrum- you chant as an army of one. Do you realize that this franchise has been in existence since 1883 with all of 2 Championships? One under the tenure of the current manager who will lead the team to a franchise record in victories. 5 consecutive post-season appearances and two back-to-back trips to the World Series. The media has consistently sought any sign of disruption or discord from the players either current or previous and not even a whiff of drama. Have you been in the clubhouse? Again and again the players are quoted about the motivation this manager provides. What do you know that we don't? Your post is further proof that your baseball IQ is suspect. Special Agent Fox Mulder
Why in the hell would you call Brown Up ????????? zogger- I don't understand why so many of you girls have your panties in a bunch over who the team called up. None of them are going to get significant time. They're here to help out in extra inning games and blowouts and will maybe get a look see after everything is clinched. Beyond that they're irrelevant. One idiot (bradco) even suggested 2 of them could make the postseason roster. 2 guys playing a few meaningless games will get chosen over guys who have been here for most of the year...yeah that'll happen.
As for Brown, fortunately you guys aren't in the business of managing people. It's clear this is just a gesture to the kid, like 09 when Charlie sent Lidge to the mound to close out the clinching game even though he stunk all season. The organization is simply saying, hey you were a part of this team, you helped us when we needed you (Francisco had bombed, Gload couldn't play everyday & the Pence trade hadn't taken place)and we want you here with us down the stretch. Like the other call ups, he won't be an integral part of the team. He's simply a body just in case. mtairy1
This comment has been deleted. justacarpenter- Only so many seats in the dugout...
Clee Liff - I thought the same thing - same with Aumont, who has been rock solid and has an electic arm.

Philly 10,
No, Schneider is poor defensively because the numbers say so. Yeah, Michael Martinez and David Herndon are not major league players. Stutes has a WAR of 0.6 which is fairly average for a bullpen arm. Gload is having a horrid year and Wilson Valdez is the very definition of average. Why are people rushing to defend Schneider? He is having a terrible year and his record while starting is a product of luck...plain and simple. Armyofthe15Monkies
Daysrum, What is your fascination with DUMBonic Brown. They gave this clown playing time in the Majors, and he muffed it. He was sent to the minors, and was booed for poor play. Now you think he'll be in left field next season ? He's the biggest "no talent" in organized ball. Your assessment of how good Brown is, and how bad the manager is, tells me you're a troll. phineas
Must be a full moon. Wierdo's are posting.... Grazman
Sheesh...Let's square things up ASAP. Schneider is fine in a part time role. He's helped Worley tremendously. Brown is only 22. He's got raw talent and we've got time. If your screen id is Howard SUCKS you should post on the Mets board. Cholly does okay with the MEN in the clubhouse. Glad we cleared THAT up. Grazman
Ruben just about has all the 40 man roster dressed and in uniform for the rest of the season. Only Mathieson and J.C. Ramirez remain in civilian clothes from the pitchers and Garcia, Galvis, Hernandez and Rivero from the infielders remain out of uniform but still on the 40 man roster. Guess Monty wouldn't spring for the extra money to suit them all up for the final two weeks. Though the playoff games in Allentown and Reading did bring in another 40,000 paying fans to help pay the bills for the minor league department. Dull
Hey daystrum, didn't anyone ever tell you that doing that too often makes you feeble minded? nc_bg- Bowker is a bust, and Gload needs 2 players to cover if he gets a hit. Dom Brown is confused at the plate, and lost on the bases. What next?
Schnieder blows...in all areas. He is awful. Kratz will get his chance as the Phils close out the season...and if he does well, he desrves to be on the 25 man roster in place of Schnieder. Kratz hits the ball painfully hard and is an EXCELLENT defensive catcher. Schnieder cannot claim either. Kratz batted around 300 all year and Schnieder only about 165...granted, different level of pitching, but the numbers are what they are. I like Kratz's chances to eek out the playoff spot over Schnieder. Kratz will have the opportunity to prove himself as the Phils close out the schedule. kelprod2
DeFlatus? I smell an up and coming player. Rabe56
Hey, these guys are up because they had good years. One or two of them might help next season and the club wants to see them against major league talent. The only one they might actually consider for a post season spot is Savery who is left handed and has been terrific all year down there, and thats a long shot but a possibility if Bastardo doesn't fix his issues of late. pjm0825
Utley, Howard, Rollins, Ruiz, Hamels, Madsen...yep, sure can't nuture and develop young talent. rwwhit
there are in mlb perhaps a dozen highly skilled baseball men (that is, both knowing the game inside out and handling players, especially the young'ns). this includes gm's, managers, coaches, farm system people. there are maybe another two dozen a notch below them. and that's it. the rest are either entrenched in the good ol boys club or have fooled enough people to be where they are. it's called politics. this shows now and again: i.e. how come greg dobbs was a bust here last year and this year is doing so well for the marlins? it becomes super-glaring in a case such as dbrown. kid's obviously got untold talent, but is a head case. not bad enough to be a suicide or a serial killer, but enough he needs proper guidance. he's not getting it coz with the phillies, a shining example of ol boys, it ain't there to be got. would willie mays have become willie mays without the fatherly hand of durocher? cholly probably believes he's such a guy, but evidence to the contrary is too strong with db. bubba church & granny hamner
Guess I gotta check what happened to Perez and Zagurski. Hard to believe neither was called up.
Also wonderingh how Savery became a pitcher again after having such a great April at the plate.
Kratz over Schneider?! Clueless comment
VicM
To answe my own question:
Perez apparently lost it, again. Record was O and 5 with an ERA near Six. But Zagurski led the team with 11 saves and had a 2.65 ERA. Can't understand why he didn't get called up unless organization has given up on him as a major league player. VicM
Les Walrond is another lefty who had a good year in the minors.
Winning record at bother Reading and LV, with a 3.38 ERA in Reading and a 1.23 ERA! at Triple A.
Phils must think Savery is better than him and Zagurski. But given Savery's lack of experience, why not bring up two lefties? VicM
Thanks for the AAA call up notice. One intriguing name NOT on the call up list is Philipe Aumont. He is big, and throws gas. I'd love for the Brass to see what his 97 mph heater would do to major leaguers, especially with games that don't count. Schwimmer, DeFratus, Stutes, Aumont, Savery, etc...will be part of a revamped bullpen for next season. Reality check folks...Madsen is a free agent with Scott Boris as his agent. Madsen goes to the highest bidder (see Jayson Werth). Lidge and his $13 million dollar salary are gone (he may resign at a REDUCED rate to keep a veteran's presence in the pen). Contraras hopefully will return to form as will Bastardo. Kratz is another interesting figure, especially since Schnieder is hitting below the Mendoza line (good defender though). Brown would be better served AWAY from the Phillies for a while. Charlie simply can't help himself by using Brown and this is not good for his development at all. Way to Go Oswalt...you looked back in form last night. drhoffman
The Phils have won 98 games with Cholly managing this year. That leaves two possibilities.
1. Who the manager is doesn't really make much difference.
2. If it does make a difference, he must be pretty good.
