Brett Myers to throw sim. game Thursday

Brett Myers has taken some big strides toward his goal of returning to the active roster by September. The righthander threw a bullpen session Sunday, started running today, and is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Thursday.

While his return is by no means imminent, the Phillies are optimistic that Myers can help them in some capacity once rosters expand in September.

Other notes:

1) Chad Durbin will make his first rehab start Wednesday for Class A Clearwater.

2) J.C. Romero is scheduled to make his first rehab start Friday in Clearwater.

3) Clay Condrey remains a ways away from a return. He is currently long-tossing.

4) Pedro Martinez was in uniform tonight for the game. He will make what is expected to be his final rehab start Wednesday in Lehigh Valley.

5) I asked pitching coach Rich Dubee about his impressions of Cole Hamels' outing on Sunday. He, like Hamels and Charlie Manuel, said he didn't think Hamels pitched as bad as the numbers (seven runs in five-plus innings) indicated. But he did say that Hamels left some balls up, and that he didn't seem to be getting the necessary downward plane on his pitches.

6) Manuel and Dubee said they have made no decisions about the rotation. J.A. Happ starts tomorrow, the same day Martinez pitches. It sounds like Happ returning to the bullpen is a realistic option. All indications are that the Phillies will put Martinez into the rotation once he is ready. And Martinez has talked like he thinks he is ready for the big leagues. Jamie Moyer likely isn't an option for the bullpen, while Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Cliff Lee are locks to remain in the rotation. It should make for some interesting decision-making.
