Brett Myers has taken some big strides toward his goal of returning to the active roster by September. The righthander threw a bullpen session Sunday, started running today, and is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Thursday.
While his return is by no means imminent, the Phillies are optimistic that Myers can help them in some capacity once rosters expand in September.
Other notes:
1) Chad Durbin will make his first rehab start Wednesday for Class A Clearwater.
2) J.C. Romero is scheduled to make his first rehab start Friday in Clearwater.
3) Clay Condrey remains a ways away from a return. He is currently long-tossing.
4) Pedro Martinez was in uniform tonight for the game. He will make what is expected to be his final rehab start Wednesday in Lehigh Valley.
5) I asked pitching coach Rich Dubee about his impressions of Cole Hamels' outing on Sunday. He, like Hamels and Charlie Manuel, said he didn't think Hamels pitched as bad as the numbers (seven runs in five-plus innings) indicated. But he did say that Hamels left some balls up, and that he didn't seem to be getting the necessary downward plane on his pitches.
6) Manuel and Dubee said they have made no decisions about the rotation. J.A. Happ starts tomorrow, the same day Martinez pitches. It sounds like Happ returning to the bullpen is a realistic option. All indications are that the Phillies will put Martinez into the rotation once he is ready. And Martinez has talked like he thinks he is ready for the big leagues. Jamie Moyer likely isn't an option for the bullpen, while Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Cliff Lee are locks to remain in the rotation. It should make for some interesting decision-making.

7 runs in 5 innings is bad, no matter how you want to paint that picture. OMIGODEAGLES- Can't continue to count on Moyer - he's done. Keep Happ in the rotation. Also need to consider resting Hamels. Chainsaw
Put Hamels on the DL with a "sore shoulder" and let Moyer keep pitching unless the division gets close again. Moyer isn't that bad fora #5, and if he can let Cole get some rest than that would be a good thing. When Cole is a bit rested, put Moyer out to pasture. maximusud
Why wait for September for Myers? He may be needed for the playoffs. If Durbin can't come back, he is definitely needed. P Even
Why do we hear that decisions are always made to make the club(s) better but then we have this situation where Happ to the bullpen does not make the team better. Moyer is a good story but he has to disappear. The pitchers should be: Hamels, Happ, Lee, Blanton, Matinez, Eyre, Madson, Lidge, Chan Ho, Myers (when ready), and Lopez. Moyer can take the Kendrick/walker spot and use him in looooong relief in blowouts. By the time myers is ready, there will be extra room on the roster to hide Moyer scootch
Andy Reid just told the media they're not allowed to talk to Brett Myers about his recovery from his injury. drbob1

This is not rocket science. Moyer is 46+. He throws with no velocity. Patient teams like Boston will hit him early and badly. Regarding Hamels, Dubee ought to get his brain rewired. 7 runs in 5 innings is...oh wait...7 runs in 5 innings. Cole is paying the price for not coming to spring training ready to pitch. He is not in the zone, and I would be very surprised to see him snap out of it as he did at the end last year. On the batter side of the equation, Ron Howard needs to sit down for a few games a la Jimmy Rollins. It's one thing to hit for average...it's another thing to hit when it means something. Too many men left on base makes for a boring game and usually a big L. Lucky for the Phillies the NL East basically sucks. Otherwise, their 5 game lead would be gone. 2stepbay

Murph, don't you mean Reading? Not Lehigh Valley... looneyj3
Yes, Moyer has the most wins on the team at 10. While that stat is somewhat amazing, he also has the SECOND WORST ERA in the NL. As tough as it's going to be and as much as he is and always will be beloved, it's time to pull the plug. Ruben was insane for signing someone 9 years away from qualifying for senior citizenship to a multi-year (2) deal. Jamie, it's not there any more, well the location and fooling hitters part, the rest of it never really was there. Please retire get more honorary degrees and maybe some kind of pitching coach role in the organization (I hear some kid named Drabek looks good ... go teach). And people need to be patient with Pedro, no i have no idea how it's all going to work out but from the wind up he wasn't too bad in his Iron Pig outing, but out of the stretch was scary bad. If he fixes that tonight, pounds the strike zone, and gets kids out, what the hell bring him and see whats there. LEE, HAMELS, BLANTON, HAPP, MARTINEZ ... this is what it should look like. phillycuse15
It is beyond me why Jamie Moyer continues to be defended by coaches and broadcasters as if he were Sandy Koufax re-incarnated! 82 mph and "he needs that pitch just off the plate"; the plate is 17" wide not 24". He doesn't need that call, he needs to retire if he can no longer throw major league strikes! Great guy; probably would be a great pitching coach, but NOT a great pitcher. DONDEN31
Lopez pitched himself off the roster last night. He throws slop. Hamels gave up a bunch of clinkers last outing but agree, his pitches were up and got hammered. Wasn't "keeping the ball down" and axiom? If you watch St Louis pitchers, they keep the ball down and perhaps Duncan preaches this constantly. Keep it down and it will stay in the park. Is anything physically wrong with Hamels? Happ needs to stay in the rotation and Moyer has to take a hike. brinkmang
