Blanton to start Game 4

POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009, 3:02 PM

Cliff Lee will not come back to pitch Game 4 on three days' rest.

Instead, Joe Blanton will get the call on Sunday night against the Yankees at Citizens Bank Park.

Lee has never pitched on three days' rest in his career, but seemed confident he could. He threw 122 pitches in his masterful Game 1 victory on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Blanton started Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers and gave up four runs in six innings. He had pitched out of the bullpen in the Division Series.

Blanton won Game 4 against Tampa Bay last year, allowing two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. He also bashed a home run.

More to come.

cheesesteak17 ....you're kidding, right?! Do you not think the Yankee scouts have already gone over EVERY pitcher on the Phil's roster? With the chance that Blanton could appear in relief, I think the Yankees are very familiar with him and every other player on the Phillies WS roster.....so, announcing our starters is not giving NY any advantage. Guess you have to find something else about which to be negative.

The Yanks lineup hits .265 lifetime against Blanton. The Phils lineup hits .261 lifetime against CC. And most of the hits on Blanton was during his rookie years while the Phils numbers against CC are more current and in his prime.

This shouldn't even be considered news. Since the LA series started the Phillies' rotation is clearly Lee, Pedro, Hamels, Blanton. No need to deviate. The only losses so far can be attributed squarely to the bats. Remember the great hue and cry over Moyer's game 2 start last year and not setting up Hamels to pitch game #7? Worked out pretty well just like this will work out well. I don't have confidence in Lee without proper rest. I have ultimate confidence in Lee if he has proper rest.

Pettite shut down the Angels great offense because the umpires expanded the strike zone considerably for him. If Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez strike out looking four times each in Game Three, and the Phillies get shut out, I hope Joe Blanton pitches the game of his life in Game Four.

A lot of pressure on Cole Hamels, I hope he's visited his Witch Dr Chiropractor and gotten all his needed adjustments. We need the Cole of last year.......Get r going Cole.

streakers daughter: how true! my enthusiasm for my team overcame my good judgment and the juggernaut known as Cliff Lee. But trust me, Yankee fandom is quite happy to see that the Yanks will be facing Lee only one more time!

blanton is from the american league the yankees already know him. phillies need to start hitting and scoring runs they had alot of time off. even the yankees are not hitting pitching is still the key. hamel's is due for a well pitched game but manuel must keep a short leash on him, same with blanton he and happ are out of their normal routine since the play-offs.

While his one playofff start this year wasn't that good, most people tend to forget that Blanton was the Phillies most consistent starter throughout the year. He did slow down a bit at the end, but he's had more than enough time to rest up and to be ready for Sunday night.

We should clobber CC on short rest. Did it before we'll do it again. Big Joe deserves this start, he's been our most consistent pitcher all year. Our bats need to give him some run support.

See the thing is Yanksin4 is that you obviously have no grasp of math or don't undertstand what the rules. Which is typical for yankees fandom. But still hilarious.

Why did Charlie announce this now when he could have waited? Answer: It's a message to Hamels and mental preparation & a vote of confidence to Blanton. Additionally, Cholly's putting all of his marbles on Game 3. He just double downed on a 11. Remember: the Phillies lit up Sabathia on short rest last year. This DOES make Game 3 that much more important, but he is trying to really motivate his former Ace Hamels. If Cole goes in with more urgency than Pettitte, that may be one of those intangible edges. Manuel is a better manager than Girardi that's for sure, he's playing with some psychology here and of course, his gut - as always.

ashemnat99: All we need are solidly-pitched games. Remember, Happ is a kind of a backup starter in case somebody implodes early. But I don't think Pettite frightens anyone, and I don't see the Phillies offense getting shut down 2 games in a row. It's going to be a dogfight.
