Blanton to start Game 4

POSTED: Friday, October 30, 2009, 3:02 PM

Cliff Lee will not come back to pitch Game 4 on three days' rest.

Instead, Joe Blanton will get the call on Sunday night against the Yankees at Citizens Bank Park.

Lee has never pitched on three days' rest in his career, but seemed confident he could. He threw 122 pitches in his masterful Game 1 victory on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Blanton started Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers and gave up four runs in six innings. He had pitched out of the bullpen in the Division Series.

Blanton won Game 4 against Tampa Bay last year, allowing two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. He also bashed a home run.

More to come.

I applaud this move. Lee on short rest is a waste -- he will not be as effective. Defeats the purpose of using him. This way, Lee on regular rest Monday night is practically automatic.

mchugu, you seem to think that Cliff Lee is the only starter capable of winning a game (maybe Pedro too). Have a little faith. After all, even if you're right and they did pitch Lee early, we'd still have very little chance of winning - he can't pitch every game. I don't think we'll be seeing a repeat of Christy Mathewson's '05 series performance.

I like the move.... The Phillies WILL beat CC on 3 days rest, so why waste Lee..... bring Lee back Game 5 to beat AJ or whoever is pitching for the Yankees.

Charlie knows best - it's time for the fan base to trust his judgment. This has more to do with sending a message to the offense than anything else - wake up and give your pitchers some runs for the next 3 games.

I don't understand the lack of confidence in J.A. Happ. The kid has proven his metal time and time again, and yet gets no respect. I would run with him over pretty boy Cole or Blanton any day.

cheesesteak17- I think I read that the Yankees have already released rotation of: C.C./A.J./Petitte/C.C./A.J./Petitte/C.C. That might have been "experts'" predictions though.

amann08, your over-confidence is inspiring, however, you may wanna pull up Blanton's numbers off the Yankees from Espn.com or CBS sports...be careful tho. Tex's numbers jumping off the page may hit you in the face......

Fox News was just playing the clip of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys and the plastic-faced anchor comes back on and says "does philly have a song? naaaaah!" That was the tipping point for me. Yeah New York has a lot of things, but we, friends, have a heart that won't stop beating even if you rip it out of our chests. GO PHILS!

Happ is needed to be an additional LH in the bullpen. You guys are giving up on this series before it even ends. The Phils are playing at home where they are 11-1 in the last two seasons; they feed off the energy of the home crowd. And only 3 of those runs off Blanton were earned against the Dodgers--they scored the 4th because of an error. Plus there is this--the Phils, in the last two postseasons HAVE NEVER LOST A GAME 4 THAT BLANTON HAS STARTED. Milwaukee, the Dodgers, the Rockies, and the Dodgers again.
