Blanton to be examined by team doc tomorrow

POSTED: Wednesday, March 31, 2010, 3:39 PM

The Phillies received another piece of bad news today, as righthander Joe Blanton pulled up short during his bullpen session with an injured abdominal muscle.

Blanton, who allowed 11 runs in his most recent outing, was scheduled to pitch again on Saturday in an exhibition against the Pirates. His first scheduled start is April 8, a week from tomorrow.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Blanton will see team doctor Michael Ciccotti tomorrow.

"We'll know tomorrow," Amaro said about the severity of the injury.

Catcher Carlos Ruiz missed today's game after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch on Monday. But Amaro said Ruiz could have played. The team was simply being cautious.

On the Bucks, I like it. We do have a lot of outfield talent. Wouldn't get crazy and deal Brown or Giles, but certainly someone else, plus maybe Joe Savory. Not sure if that'll get it done but this is the Pirate's management we're talking about. We could prob offer Ricky Bo and they'd take it.

I have a question. Do MLB teams carry any kind of insurance that pay the players' salaries in the event of injuries that keep players out of the lineup for a few months or an entire season? Thanks for any insights.

Zach Duke is a nice young pitcher, but do we need another LH starter when we already have 3 (Hamels, Happ, Moyer)? And BTW, I was afraid Blanton's follow thru was an injury waiting to happen. I posted something to that effect last year. Pitchers are taught to finish their follow trhu like if they were picking a quarter off the ground. Just look at his picture. Most pitchers when they finished a pitch you can see the numbers in their back. With Blanton, all you see is his stomach. I don’t know how serious the injury is, but it could linger for a while, because he will keep putting a lot of stress on the injury with that pitching style.

    1980 ... The one-liner of the year? ... It's in the running.

Lee (although he was on the Mariners at the time), Moyer, and now Blanton?! Are the Phillies' trainers making them do too stomach crunches or something?

I still like the Phils shot at the series this year. Blanton will get better this is why Kendrick is so important.

Looks KK will be in the rotation at least to begin with...and Phils bats better wake up.

Zach Duke sucks. He'd get eaten alive at CBP.
