UPDATE:

Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said Blanton experienced some soreness in his arm while warming up and went in to see team doctor Michael Ciccotti. That's all we know at this point.

Kendrick allowed five runs in three innings, all of them coming on home runs by Jason Giambi.

A few minutes before the National Anthem, Joe Blanton left the bullpen where he had been warming up for his scheduled start against the Rockies. He was immediately replaced by righthander Kyle Kendrick, who will indeed start against the Rockies.

The Phillies have not given a reason for the late scratch, although Blanton has battled a sore elbow for the past few weeks.

The Phillies might also be playing the weather: it is supposed to start raining here at some point within the next 45 minutes. So it's possible Blanton isn't hurt.

Still, that would be the first time since I've been covering the beat that I can remember Manuel changing his starter due to an anticipated rain delay.
