Blanton placed on DL; Worley to start Fri.

Just got word from the Phillies that righthander Joe Blanton has been placed on the disabled list with what the team is calling a medial impingement of the right (throwing) elbow. No immediate indication on the severity of the injury, but righthander Vance Worley has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start against the Mets tomorrow night.

The injury is a tough blow for Blanton, who is coming off two straight quality starts against the Brewers and the Padres in which he allowed two runs in seven innings in both outings.

Worley is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in four starts (22 2/3 innings) for Lehigh Valley. It will be his third big league start. Worley spent September with the Phillies last season, starting a 7-1 loss to the Marlins in which he allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in five innings, and a 7-0 win over the Braves in which he allowed one hit and two walks with three strikeouts in five scoreless innings.

I knew that the usual idiots with no knowledge of pitching/of baseball as a whole will put their grain of salt.... but the truth is the truth... Yeah send the check, I'll gladly take it.

Tired old Cholly has probably already asked Roy Halliday if he can pick up the slack and start pitching with 2 days rest.

Just in case, this is one of the comments I've made about Blanton for the haters. This one was in response to another comment. Look at the date. BTW, Blanton has been hurt twice since these two comments:

I can't believe he's never been on the disabled list with his lack-of-wind-up pitching. How does he hit 91-92 without blowing out his arm by the 4th?

reidbetweenthelines, I see you also noticed Blanton's awkward pitching mechanics. I'm surprised his shoulder is still attached to his body. Sometimes players get away with bad habits since they were kids because they were superior to their competition but with age those bad habits catch up with them.

A minor blip in the grand scheme. Worley needs a closer look.

Wow, when the injury bug hits, it really hits...Kind of a shame, he was starting to pitch better, even if one of the starts was against the Padres at Petco Park. This does give us an early season look at Worley though, and more important to me, all of these injuries not only give Stutes and some of the others experience, but test the mettle of our team that has such high expectations right now. Afterall, they were suppose to just run away with things....

Why have Worley start Friday? With the off day, Halladay will be on normal rest. He last pitched on Sunday. In fact, with Monday off also, they do not need a 5th starter until the following Sunday, May 8. Someone please buy Charlie and Dubee a calendar so they can count out five days!

nerve impingementin the elbow shouldn't be too bad. give him some rest, phhysical therapy and antiinflammatory meds and he'll be fine. miss a start or two. good chance for worley.

But the starters could all use an extra day off. Doc especially.

Uncle Cholly, you're going to have to earn every dollar of that contract extension you signed during Spring Training!

Is anyone wondering what's up with the Phillies' training crew? I never remember so many injuries, especially to pitchers. Maybe the Phils should hire Pat Croce.
