Blanton placed on DL; Worley to start Fri.

Just got word from the Phillies that righthander Joe Blanton has been placed on the disabled list with what the team is calling a medial impingement of the right (throwing) elbow. No immediate indication on the severity of the injury, but righthander Vance Worley has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start against the Mets tomorrow night.

The injury is a tough blow for Blanton, who is coming off two straight quality starts against the Brewers and the Padres in which he allowed two runs in seven innings in both outings.

Worley is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in four starts (22 2/3 innings) for Lehigh Valley. It will be his third big league start. Worley spent September with the Phillies last season, starting a 7-1 loss to the Marlins in which he allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk in five innings, and a 7-0 win over the Braves in which he allowed one hit and two walks with three strikeouts in five scoreless innings.

S**t. There goes the trade for a RH bat. But I'm not surprised. As a matter of fact, those who has been commenting for a while should know I predicted a few years ago that Blanton was an injury waiting to happen because of his pitchig style: poor mechanics, awful follow through where he puts too much stress on his shoulder and arm instead of using his legs and upper body more. He practically pitches flat-footed.

We've all been waiting on pins and needles for your prediction to come true, Nostradamus.

A few years ago you predicted that? Good stuff. I predict that Ibanez will retire one of these days. Maybe in the next few years.

I went back through my files and found your prediction. Congratulations, the check will arrive some time next week.

I would agree with the trade comment El Zorro. Even if it's a short stint on the DL his trade value will be lowered. If there's anything good in this I guess it's that we get to see more of Worley and we'll get to see him as a starter, which is where I think he has the most value.

As much as people give him a hard time, he really pitched well his last two outings. Lets just hope Worley is ready. Im surprised there not letting Kendrick fill in but I guess the bullpen is already in shambles.

Worley has a real good arm.. He may be better than Blanton already. If he can stay composed, I think he'll do well.. Would love to see Blanton and his overpriced salary out of here so we can spend on another outfield bat..

Kendrick hasn't pitched a start in over a month - he's not conditioned to go as a starter. I for one am glad to see Worley come up to replace Blanton. I hope he does as well as he has previously up in the big league. WORLEY!!! WOOT!

I'm surprised the way he throws the ball, that it took this long for an injury to appear. I've been harping about his pitching mechanics ever since he got here. I wish him a speedy, and complete recovery.

KK isn't stretched out enough to be a starter. Too bad, 7 years in the league with lots of innings and he has had no major injuries.. Tough break because if we have another injury to a starter we will really be in deep

I think the back-up list of starters looks something like: Worley, Kendrick, Carpenter, Herndon. Any used bullpen spots would be filled in by guys like Mathieson and Schwimmer.

    Okay, I feel sick now.

WORELY-WORELY... ESPN needs to add him to the fantasy baseball list. I have a seriously deep league and with Blanton out I need an arm. I'm glad we get to see the kid pitch.
